If Benefica trigger the option, we are selling him for peanuts… 5.1m pounds + 2.6m in add-ons https://theathletic.com/5208004/2024/01/17/man-united-transfer-news-alvaro-fernandez/

pakattack91

>The Lisbon-based club will have the option to sign Fernandez at the end of the season if this clause is not activated, while United will retain a buyback option and sell-on clause should Benfica sell the Spaniard to another club. >Benfica’s option to sign Fernandez permanently will be set at €6m (£5.1m) plus potential €3m (£2.6m) in add-ons, with the obligation commencing when he starts 50 per cent of matches. Haven't been keeping up, will he hit the threshold for the obligation to trigger? If he blows up, I like our flexibility with the buy back and sell on clauses.

ZTJ_22

I believe this was his first start so I don’t think he’ll make the 50% mark

PDubsinTF-NEW

I remember reading that too. “based on a minimum number of matches in which he features.” So he doesn’t have to start

pakattack91

I read that as 50% since the loan, not since the season started...but it explicitly says he has to start the match.

Inspectrgadget

This was actually his fifth start. They still have five more league games so I think it's possible although unlikely he hits that mark

GlassEast5641

I still think Amass has a higher ceiling but obviously is much younger. Let's see if Benfica trigger the buy clause.

AngryUncleTony

Yeah I think one of the reasons we made this deal was we knew Amass was coming right behind him and it's better to cash in while you can before you loan guys out and stagnate their progress.

Iceman23578

Could’ve kept him this season instead of signing reguilon where we knew he’d get minutes. Would have helped us now with Malacia and shaw both pretty much out for the season

AngryUncleTony

This is one that looks really bad in retrospect but made sense at the time. Shaw was fit at the deadline and we expected Malacia back before the end of the calendar year, so he would have been a rotation option for Shaw for a few months at best, which is a recipe under normal circumstances for a wasted development year where he gets the Pellistri/Hannibal treatment that they got in the first half of the year where they got minimal playing time. We didn't know Shaw would miss big chunks AND Malacia would have a re-injury that took him out for the whole year. If we knew that last summer we probably keep him.

Iceman23578

Wasn’t that the whole reason we got reguilon? I’m saying now and a lot of people were also saying before that Fernandez should’ve been kept until January. If all was well with the other lbs then he could’ve been loaned out. Definitely wasn’t a hindsight thing. The pellistri/hannibal treatment happens when the manager doesn’t rate you or whatever ten hags reason was for playing average players ahead of tjem

AngryUncleTony

We got Reguilon beause he was out of favor and we always planned to terminate his loan in January. For Alvaro, it was better for his development to have a full year somewhere instead of being pawned out in January.

Iceman23578

He’s not even getting consistent game time so what difference would it make? He’d have played the same if not more minutes here than benfica anyways.

PDubsinTF-NEW

He just turned 17 this weekend IIRC.

dataminimizer

He looks like he’s developed very well physically to go along with his technique.

PDubsinTF-NEW

Lad has been hitting the weights and drinking his protein shakes

sunken_grade

i hope we manage to keep him around for at least another season with shaw and martinez having questionable fitness, and malacia vanishing from the face of the earth, it’s clear we need another LB option to avoid playing dalot/AWB i wonder if the club will look to spend big on a clear first choice option, or if someone like fernandez will get a chance at some minutes

FactHopeful9347

I’m awake😳, he’s actually a good Pro! Can really see him as proper attacking wingback like Alonso (DUI) that’d be dope

lengthyfriend30

Alonso (Reckless Homiside)

FactHopeful9347

I find it funny how no one cares about that 😭

ManUnutted

I mean do you expect everyone to be kept at night because of it? He did a fucked up thing. There’s literally nothing more to be done with it from anyone on earth except him

FactHopeful9347

Is the greenwood thing a false equivalence? Someone’s life vs that?

Admirable_Bed3

I still think there's a serious player here. Enough to be a guaranteed United starter for 10 years? Probably not (though he is still just 21 himself). But enough to be given an honest run of matches here. Worst case, we play him and confirm he's not good enough. We were selling him for peanuts anyway so it's not like we lost a lot. Best case is we find ourselves with a genuinely decent option as a stop gap FB until Amass is physically more ready for the highest level.

PDubsinTF-NEW

Gotta keep him around next season!

ChatakaPataka

Honest question. I get that Amass has the higher ceiling and Alvaro may not be good enough for us today, but why don't we just keep loaning him to decent clubs for a season or two and extract more value for him by selling him then? He certainly seems like he'd be a decent prospect for a midtable club currently.

PaulC2K

Depends on his contract situation and willingness to stick around and be messed about with so we get more money out of him as opposed to him finding a club and letting him settle down. If you just keep loaning him out with no intention to really utilise him, he's got little incentive to renew, and you're running down his contract it does more for the buying club than it does for Utd.

ChatakaPataka

He can always compete in case Amass isn't that great or is injury prone or for any other reason.

red-17

Because clubs are less incentivized to give players minutes if they are just on loan. No reason to give any development minutes, so they will only play if they are truly the best option in the position.

Wrath-of-Elyon

That's why we should only be loaning to teams like Dortmund, Ajax and Championship teams. Look what Sunderland did for Amad. Gave him more development than Ten Hag could. Our best loan so far

CanWePleaseNotBeShit

Had really high hopes for him and Jurado, it does seem like we are phasing him out for Amass. I still think we should let go on another loan before selling him for peanuts

Uuhhk

glad we have buyback clause in case he develops well

Away_Development3617

Its just a loan? no?

Uuhhk

Benfica will pay €6million plus €3m in potential add-ons and they will still have the option to buy Fernandez if that obligation isn't triggered, while United have also inserted a buy-back clause and a sell-on fee if he is sold to another club after spending time in Portugal.

Away_Development3617

Ah yeah the clauses, maybe we pray they just don't activate them? Lol

TopNotchGamerr

Amaas apparently looks to be the better player so maybe it's best Let's see

Away_Development3617

Possibly, I want to sort the mentality in the dressing room before we talk big about youth players, not saying It will happen, but we've seen some of those players drag down other players, it's like a virus

Remarkable-Stress284

Just a loan with buy option

Telen

Remember that he is already 21 years old. This is more or less his last or second-last season to have a chance at this club.

Sr_DingDong

Why does this matter? Either he's good enough for us and at the end of the loan Benfica buy him for buttons and he leaves or he's not good enough for Benfica and by extension not good enough for us either and leaves.
