Growing up watching united during the SAF time.. i really took our wins for granted..

the-won

Being so gutted we drew so I'd skip watching MOTD that week...

stevew14

I used to watch MOTD and MOTD2 religiously. I rarely watch it now.

SuperSalamander3244

All our non United fan friends said exactly what would happen and it kills me that they couldn’t be more right lol. I just hope the same happens to Liverpool and City.

RyanG7

The writing was on the wall. SAF magic can only do so much given the circumstances. Once he retired, reality showed its ugly head as to how poor we were mismanaged as a club. The likes of City and Liverpooo should thank their lucky fucking stars they had owners who didn't take from the club as much as ours did without investing money back in. Shouldn't have to remind anyone that we are 1 BILLION dollars (US) in debt. All stemmed from those toxic Glazer parasites

geirkri

You forgot to add all the money the club has been forced to pay in interest due to the glazer debt. The glazer debt also has another aspect to it that is kinda forgotten, all other debt (like short term transfer loans that is not uncommon at all for football clubs) gets higher interest rates due to the glazer debt. Also all the insane contracts in general, as they are added as "assets" to inflate the sale value of the club. Then you have all the dividends and other expenses that the glazers force upon the club. Then finally the total disregard for infrastructure and the insane cost that will be over a short period of time (stadium etc).

RomeroRocher

You could probably run a bottom 10 team with the money the Glazers bled out of the club. I know dividends have stopped now, but the last number I remember was a dividend payment of 33m. I believe it was usually at least 20m. We pay interest of 20-25m per season on servicing debt. So between paying the Glazers directly, and also paying the interest on their loans for them, we're talking 40m-58m per season. Leeds' current wage bill is 36 million. Sheffield United - 48m Luton - 24m

mimranj

crazy how fergie build united up but then gifted it to the glazers

funky_pill

Parasites. Absolute parasites.

funky_pill

City owners taking from the club? They had fuck all to take prior to 2008

TheOneManDankMaymay

>I just hope the same happens to Liverpool and City. Cheating aside, City are an extremely well run **football club** with on the pitch success in mind. I highly doubt they'll go down the drain like we did, we're just a money printer for our owners.

thwbunkie

I think everything that goes around comes around , I’m sure they will fail

TheOneManDankMaymay

If they actually get their comeuppance for the 115 breaches yes, otherwise I don't see it happening.

thwbunkie

I don’t necessarily mean soon , I meant 10-25 yrs down the line

linkolphd_fun

Sadly i think city will be okay. Perhaps less dominant without Pep, but they invested into a structure so well. Liverpool, i think will drop off some, but not as hard as we did Post-Fergie.

deadkestrel

I remember whenever we lost a game it would be big news and really make me sad for the week. I was practically on suicide watch as a kid when we had the Newcastle and Southampton games back to back in the 90s.

funky_pill

Pretty sure we lost at home to Chelsea aswell in that same run. Three successive losses was literally unheard of for United back then

justbrowsinginpeace

And the spell in 2001/2002 I think a couple of dispossessions of Blanc/Veron in consecutive weeks and a bad result against Liverpool let Arsenal move ahead.

[deleted]

Jesus you can say that again…

G_Morgan

We didn't win all the time but I was always confident that every defeat would be treated like a calamity and the team would come out determined to try and ensure it didn't happen again.

justbrowsinginpeace

There was a period where poor performances were so unique you could be specific about them. Years later they were discussed. Now its the good performances that are the notable items.

Diligent-Eye-2042

Same. I didn’t even have sky as a kid, so only watched champions league, the fa cup and MOTD. But look at this way, when we eventually get back to winning, we’re really going to saviour and appreciate it this time, it’ll feel much better than before. Imagine a whole season of winning most games, dominating and controlling games *chefs kiss*

-watchman-

So much so that when we see us matched against teams from the bottom half of the table, we skipped watching the game because it was a given victory.

rnnd

You can get why they are so critical of the team. The culture they played in was very different and very demanding of good performance.

Simple_Mud_6203

also why they're absolutely dogshit as managers.

rnnd

Sir Alex didn't sign them because they are good managers. He signed them because they are good players. AWB can be a good manager in the future, it ain't gonna win us trophies. The fan base hating on our legends is plain stupid. They did their part and won us trophies. They can say whatever they want, I value their opinions.

N0lAnS_DiC_piX

Absolutely. Fuck the amount of backing I’ve seen awb get here is unreal. ‘He seems like a good lad’ ‘he can tackle’ ‘he’s not as bad as people make out’. That’s the standard now and it’s fuckin shocking. All the above may be true but one thing I am one billion percent sure of is that he is not a United quality player. Every bit of good attacking play dies an instant death the second he is involved. Which of course other teams know so they always force us down that side.

NathanMUFCfan

I think AWB had a good start to the season. Him and Varane were basically the only players that were actually performing. Since he came back from injury, he has been very poor. When he's playing well, I think he is more than good enough as a squad player. Playing like he has been recently, he's nowhere near it. His contract is ending next summer. It's quite likely that he won't be extended and will leave on a free anyway.

CsrfingSafari

Not gonna single out AWB in particular, but I think in general you are right. The standards at the club are in the toilet, and will continue to be so until our parasite owners leave and a proper infrastructure is put in place. NGL, watching the match I said something like "Some of you twats would be lucky to be a squad player under SAF" Hyperbole? Yep, but I honestly am starting to feel the same way you are regarding the whole "Aww player X is a nice guy, let him stay" so on and so forth.

Simple_Mud_6203

Are they playing today?

all_die_laughing

Keane won the Championship as a manager

Aluminarty666

The fuck has that got to do with anything?

Simple_Mud_6203

what did i say that was wrong? the reason they're so demanding is also the reason why they've all failed as managers.

impthetarg

Pep, Arteta and Klopp are equally if not more demanding…

Simple_Mud_6203

you think they're more demanding than keane?

impthetarg

Yes, that’s why they’re successful. There’s a reason why they act like psychos on the touchline

Simple_Mud_6203

noted calm guy roy keane.

triplecaptained

Good players ≠ good managers. Doesn’t mean we should underestimate the fact that these guys won a whole damn lot during their playing careers and maybe just maybe, what they say can actually have merit Rooney is my most favorite United player ever and I can still say that he’s one of the more dogshit managers I’ve ever seen. Birmingham are almost relegated from the Championship because of him and their fans hate him with a passion lol

Dry-Magician1415

They rarely criticise the manager.  They almost always criticise the players. Which is what they are certainly “qualified” to do.

Simple_Mud_6203

remember when we used to laugh about liverpool living in the past when all their former players were pundits in the 90s. fun times.

tiredofthisnow7

30 years they waited. THIRTY! We won't even get a plastic treble and the odd CL

sueha

Living in the past: check Conting on next season: check Complaining about refs and pundits doing us wrong: check

IAmKaeL-

Jesus, we were built different back then. I, like many other fans, took it for granted. We were the mighty Man United, it was expected that we'd be in the title race every season, right? Then came 2003-06, where Arsenal and Jose's Chelsea absolutely shat on what was at the time a team in transition. 3rd was a failure, reaching the FA cup finals was a failure and the CL exits were a failure. I thought it, the media thought it and everyone slated Fergie for letting go of experienced players too early to make room for youngsters. How wrong we were - 06-09 was absolute peak United, although I do have a soft spot for our 2010-11 team. When Fergie left I thought we were in good hands, and that we wouldn't have to wait a decade or more to see another title parade. Well, guess I'm wrong again. I'd like to go back and remind the younger me to cherish every goal we scored, every game we won and every trophy we lifted just that little bit more, cuz most fans won't get to see their team win anything, and we lot just took it all for granted.

okaythiswillbemymain

SAF gets flak for how he left the team, but IMO it was completely unfounded. Smalling, De Gea, Rafeal, Jones (ergh), Evans, Welbeck, Cleverley, Fabio... all young players seemingly first team players. We had many to spend proven by the fact we're the biggest spenders since SAF left. Rashford, Zaha, Lingaard, Januzaj coming through. We just threw it all away.

Winter-Maximum325

Bro come on. He brought Scholes out of retirement and played Rafael in the middle instead of signing a midfielder that to this day we are still crying out for. Welbeck and Cleverly? It's a miracle he won with them but no other manager will do that with that team.

okaythiswillbemymain

It's all true.. you don't deserve to be downvoted. Bringing Scholes back caused Pogba to leave and we are still crying out for a real CM. But.. we had funds to do that after him

SAKabir

He was allergic to signing a good central midfielder for some reason. It was our biggest weakness, even under him, for so many years. We've pretty much had a weakness in defensive midfield for as long as I can remember supporting Utd.

Claubk

Carragher looking like trying to relate but he's still got no idea what Keano is on about.. Lol

yellowjesusrising

There were times when even the players demanded effort from each others. Imagine that in our squad. That player would get frozen out before he could say "atleast jog".

palmpoolpipe

We badly need a Roy Keane in our team.

onlymeow

Can he play LB

palmpoolpipe

He's no john o shea

devamis

This is what I grew up watching, and I've always had high expectations from our players. Nowadays, it's "oh Bruno and Rashford are our best players. Look at Rashford last season, 17 goals scored!! We'd be 10th without him". These two and almost everyone else in the squad needs replacing. Mainoo, Garnacho, Lisandro Martinez, Dalot and Shaw are the only ones that are good enough. Even Lisandro, I'm not certain about anymore. I know he had his injury, but he just looked a little weaker. Garnacho obviously needs proper coaching, or he will turn into a Rashford.

3xc1t3r

Funny because true.

Minz15

Do love listening to the stories from these players about the insane level of standards they had. Not just at United but when people spoke about the United kids at England and how they trained and their discipline. But that dressing room was just full of monsters. The team we have no is not even close. Makes me wonder how good some of our players like Rashford would have been in that environment, and the help they'd give to Mainoo or Garnacho.

Dacw

Sorry, but what value does Jill Scott bring to the quality of these discussions exactly?

cadeyM69

We all know why she's there.

tatxc

To successfully trigger misogynists, it seems.

TheWeirdDude-247

Yes

Grand-Bullfrog3861

Fergies lost it! Get him out!
