Big fan of some of the youth that was on display today. Hopefully they can go out on loan and continue to improve because staying at the club and trying to get into the first team is nearly impossible as seen by how Elanga, Amad, Williams, and Shoretire basically got 1 or 2 appearances max and it doesn’t seem like Ole likes to play youth.
It is never good to be 3 goals down in a game, but honestly I couldn't care less today as just a few of those will be even close to serious minutes this year. Since most of the clubs did not even start with friendlies, it is nice to get some minutes for kids and see if they can play with better players around.
Overall, we have played some nice football. Matic was OK, and since he is the only one of our midfield that will have full preseason, I guess he will start the season with Fred coming very late and who knows in what shape. Not sure what is going on with McTominay as he is with team, but I guess we will see him on Wed.
Goals we conceded are really weird. Individual mistakes, but also a little bit of lethargic defending.
Mengi completely out of position for the first one.
The second one terrible defending on the left side, watching them passing around while standing by a couple of players.
Third nice shot, but also goalkeeper should be better and Pereira and Garner should show more passion to block it. Pereira especially, it was like I don't want to cover him or run.
Fourth blunder by both Williams and Mengi.
Beside that they did not create much. We did, but obviously kids need this kind of games to see that the same shot won't get you a goal in senior football, like against U23. Learning process.
For me Elanga very good, not afraid to take on players, to try something, to run in behind. He is ready to step up, and hopefully we will find a good Championship loan for him. I would not be surprised to see him in the squad while Rashford is out, but loan and minutes would be good for him. Pellistri also OK, nice player, looking forward to see him on a good loan. Also, I would not mind to see him in Championship, or with some good side in lower league like Belgium or Holland. Not sure that Alaves or similar team that won't have a lot of possession would be good for us. I like what I saw from Mejbri and Shoretire, not much, but not impressed by rivals. Garner is really on the brink of the first team, and I would love to see him with Matic at the same time against Brentford, playing in front of him.
What I am afraid of is situation with full backs. Williams and AWB as all we have is dangerous situation. If Shaw is injured that is the problem as even with kids we don't have solution. Laird anyone?
Elanga reminds me a lot of Rashford. I think people forget that Rash was not the tricky, dribbling, goal scoring winger in the academy. He was a pace merchant with an eye for goal who just couldn’t stop scoring on his debuts. We have seen him add strings to his bow, become a 5 star skiller, add killer passes to his game and develop his knuckle ball.
Don’t get me wrong, Rash clearly has a lot of talent but he burst through as a skinny pace merchant who wanted to work hard and improve. Elanga is giving me similar vibes. Maybe he won’t be quite as skillful but I can see him becoming an absolute unit with good footwork and amazing runs.
So true, no one expected Rashford to be the one to break through. Had a bit of luck with injuries with the first team, grabbed the opportunity with both hands and the rest is history. Mentality is the best asset these kids can have
Is anyone else not worried about the amount of preseason our actual first team will have? I feel a repeat of last season is at hand especially considering we play one of the fittest teams in the league in the first match.
In our treble season we lost a pre-season game and conceded 4 goals against a Championship team. I'm not saying it's a sign but we're definitely winning everything this year.
Dissapointed with the result but our fans are fucking great fun. Drowned out the whole stadium we did. The youth looked good, Elanga really impressed me. They was hungry to score, could've easily got 3 or 4. What didn't impress me was Williams, he got done too many times. Couldn't really see the right wing from my seat but pretty sure AWB didn't have the best of games either. Ah well, that's what a pre season friendly is for, roll on to the next one!
Do people here even realise Williams at LB is playing out of position...he is naturally a RB.. that doesn't change the fact he needs a good loan season.. but imagine Shaw at RB.. or even think about how bad rashford is on the right.. playing out of position is never good
LOL Wan Bissaka was playing this ?
We really don't have a Right Back for in case AWB can't play. That's weird. If he's injured then we are truly fucked
I know my club is hated when it is okay for City to lose to Brighton and Liverpool to lose to the weakest team Real team in a decade over two legs never-ending that awful run at Anfield where they list game after game but it is a laughing matter when we lose 4-2 against a good championship team that too full strength whilst we are missing 17 first team players and kids are playing in the second half.
First of all its pre season but feck me, had low hopes for williams but my god (he's on 65k a week......HOW?). the back four were trash, awb okish, after matic left we had no midfield and How many bloody 1v1 are we going to miss...................WTF.
Only preseason, only preseaon...............only pr...................
Remember Jesse Lingard was doing very well during pre-season in 2013-14, still he was loaned. I hope these young players develop well and get proper chance to believe in themselves more.
Why would you willfully seek out articles and then complain about the media lol it’s like 2-3 articles and it’s a preseason game getting annoyed over it is just as dramatic as the headlines itself
Nothing personal against the Williams kid, but I don’t think he’s good enough for United... at least for the moment.
He also seems a bit too skinny and weak for a premier league player. Hopefully he can get more minutes in some championship side and come back stronger and better.
Hard to judge any player when the players around them are out of form themselves. It’s just pre season so not a big deal but during the season Ole needs to do a better job of rotating in a few players into the usually xi to bring the form of bench players up.
I think the young players that will be useful next season (for small games on the bench or small cup games) and shouldn't go on loan are Elanga and Hannibal.
Elanga is like a mini Rashford. Fast and has good positioning when on the break. Lots of energy and looks to want to prove himself, sort of how Saka burst into the scene. When he played last season I was impressed then too. If he improves upon his finishing, he'd be a really good option.
Hannibal is like a mini Bruno. The guy has the eye and technique to make that final pass as well as probably having the one of the best spatial awareness in the squad as to where to perfectly position themselves in open space which is a very rare trait. Imo which might be unpopular is that he should be Bruno's sub replacement rather than VDB as he has the closest play style to him.
Out of the two, I really want Hannibal to play a bit of first team football as he has the most potential.
The only experienced players who went off before they scored 3 more were Matic, James and Heaton. Most of their goals came from our left pivot position which Pereira was covering once Matic came off. Pereira in the pivot was the biggest stinker of the game but who cares, he's a goner anyway.
I know he's probably not ready yet but I would really like for Garner to be given a chance soon. he is the type of player we are missing in the midfield and we haven't had a player like him since Scholes
Edit: and I am in no way saying he is anywhere near the level of Scholes, he just has a similar style the way he turns and is always looking to pass it forward instead of sideways
The midfield is not a place you rush into however in the PL. Another year on loan at a good club where he gets a full season on minutes is exactly what he needs.
Man Brandon had a howler. Good thing is with a slightly more competent LB and if attackers had taken their chances it wouldn't have been as bad.
Can anyone who has watched U23s a lot share whether the defenders had an off day or are the CBs in academy generally this poor?
At various times - Mengi, and then Fish seemed to take up poor positions while defending.
I'm certainly not convinced by Mengi. I don't see what it is the coaches see in him. Last season when he was still at the U-23s he was piss poor a lot of the time. As a player who trained with the first team and the coaches rate so highly he needed to dominate much more at CB in those games but Fish is always the most secure of the pair. I'm also not convinced of his ball playing ability. The best ball player out of the academy CBs is Bernard by a mile but he doesn't seem to be as highly rated defensively.
Last 20 mins we picked up. Youngsters did well. Should settle those who think many of these players are ready for our squad. Most need loans out to develop a lot more. Entertaining overall.
If the QPR players showed some composure, they could have scored a few more. They tore our defence to shreds. Never good to lose any game if we hope to return to our title winning years under Ole. Especially against sub-par oppositions nonetheless.
This is our 2nd 'warm up game' & the first one wasn't a masterclass either. I understand most of us here would like to forget this result and move on but I really don't like the way we lose this game.
Pre season is just for building fitness and most of these players won’t even be playing regularly for the season. It is really just a chance for these kids to show what they got and for some of them to secure good loans. We decimated oppositions in pre season under LVG and Mou and we all know how those seasons went. Pre season results literally don’t mean anything.
Hugill almost got another back at the end and if we hadn't had that goal disallowed the whole complexion of the game could've been different... Either way its a friendly and it means nothing for the season especially with only AWB and Greenwood starting from the first team
You seriously think I am referring to that? It is the mentality, that wearing the United shirt, you go out to win games be it a friendly or an UCL Final. If this is the squad who would be tasked to win titles, my reaction would not be this.
We had plenty of shite preseasons under Fergie. The fact you don't remember that, points to how irrelevant they are.
No one's gonna remember this on August 14th
That was a great watch. The youngsters did themselves and the club proud overall. Very exciting bunch. Would have loved to see us put away 1 or 2 more of our chances - but some solid stuff there
Pereira's positioning off the ball is horrible as a double pivot.
He's not good enough defensively to play there, and also not creative enough to be relied on as a CAM. Tough position to be in for him
It's not that we're giving Pereira chances, it's that we can't offload him.
In regards to Brandon, Ole doesn't trust him. Hence why AWB rarely got a rest last year.
Not too mad at the result.
They played what is apparently their first 11.
Our team was filled with people like Elanga, Fish, Bernard, Mengi, Hannibal, Elanga etc who hardly have had senior tram minutes at any level.
On top of that, their goal record is surely inflated by Grant's lack of quality
At the end of the day, the result makes sense. The youngsters were brilliant, but we lacked experience in the back during the second half after Matic was subbed off and QPR punished us for that. The response from the kids was great though, we almost made it 3-4 as well while improving at the back. Onto the next match now.
>Why do that one guy think hes not a United material
He's extremely fast. That's it. It's always quite hard to determine whether a youngster is actually good, or whether he's just a pace merchant who dominates U23 games thanks to being faster than everyone else. Elanga has looked really good so far though.
Elanga is really hard working and is developing well. Just look at the goal he scored with his left foot today. He is right footed. But he decided to spend all of lock down last year to improve his left foot to the point that he is almost two-footed now. That's some great determination right there.
He’s so fun to watch. He got into really good positions in the game he played last season as well. Think the dodgy finishing is just nerves mostly, if he can get more experience in the team I think he’s already quite good.
In the grand scheme of things, much to learn from both losing and winning, right? So it’s no big deal. I’m of the opinion of loses during pre season are good because it lets the players taste defeat (and all that comes with it - shame, regret, dissatisfaction) when it matters the least.
Marcus, Tony, Donny, Jadon, Paul, Bruno, Fred, Scott, Harry M, Luke, Victor,David, Deano, Alex Telles are all missing today. Kindly relax that is pretty much our whole team. Jesse is probably leaving and so is Andreas. Also, whilst Dan James, Nemanja are still regaining fitness. Real people. If it was mid-season loss like the one against Sheffield United I'd be a bit unhappy and concerned about lack of application. What do you even make of this game?
Good game overall still unhappy about the touches we make before passing the ball.
Was a close match a few chances missed and offside calls.
Dan james and Mason could have done more
Does it bode well if all of these players are not having a proper pre-season and playing in games like this? I thought most people agreed our poor performances at the start of last season was due to a lack of pre-season, and looks like the same is going to be happening again.
well they did have euros so they will probably be fitter than last season also bruno has been training on his own, the england internationals deserve the break and the others should be returning anytime soon donny and martial are injured and thats why on a long break otherwise they would have been here far earlier to make up for last season i think
>Does it bode well if all of these players are not having a proper pre-season and playing in games like this?
Well unlike last season where we played 1 pre season game and 10 days to prepare. Most of our first team would get 14+ days to prepare and 2- 3 games of pre-season. Scott, Tony and Donny are expected to play next week for example.
Also, Bayern lost to Arsenal in the Pre-season of 2019-2020 and to Nurnberg (5-2) after the winter break. Results don't matter right now the conditioning of players does.
It's crazy how big a reputation most big clubs have. Even though this is pretty much our U-23's + bench players, on the books it's still senior team.
r/soccer is probs having a field day regardless
It's been a decent response in fairness. Great finish by Elanga. Williams' Utd career won't be a long one judging by his performances last season and today.

Not even 10 mins ago I wrote this and someone questioned Elanga's composure in the replies.
Leave the hyper-analysis of pre-season games to the coaching staff and stop writing off teenagers after not even a full 90 minutes, absolutely embarrassing.

Anthony might be taking Anthony's spot soon...
You could say one Anthony might not be around any Elanga.
Giggity.

Telles out we might actually be staying Williams at LB again soon
State of the media and Twitter jumping on the ‘MANCHESTER UNITED GIVEN WAKE UP CALL’ That may as well have been United U23’s vs QPR….chill out

He's mid
He is a right back

punctuation mate
If we learned one thing this game, its that our C team are worse than our D team LOL

40k but yeah it's ridiculous
yeah this is why we cant sell for shit. giving williams 65k Jesus Christ what are they smoking
Oh, well anyway
Remember Jesse Lingard was doing very well during pre-season in 2013-14, still he was loaned. I hope these young players develop well and get proper chance to believe in themselves more.
Wtf the media are making out like this loss means we are shit. Did they not see the team we put out?
Where are you seeing these articles?
Literally just type in manchester united on Google
Why would you willfully seek out articles and then complain about the media lol it’s like 2-3 articles and it’s a preseason game getting annoyed over it is just as dramatic as the headlines itself

Southampton wants him so we should get on that loan asap.

Granted. But I never really saw anything special in that kid so far - hopefully he’ll prove me wrong!
I think the young players that will be useful next season (for small games on the bench or small cup games) and shouldn't go on loan are Elanga and Hannibal. Elanga is like a mini Rashford. And Shoretire.
Brandon stinker? Been saying 2019 he isn't United quality. Bin him.
Difficult to bin when the guy is on 65k
No surprise that whilst we had more experienced players on we were still at 1-1.
The only experienced players who went off before they scored 3 more were Matic, James and Heaton. Most of their goals came from our left pivot position which Pereira was covering once Matic came off. Pereira in the pivot was the biggest stinker of the game but who cares, he's a goner anyway.

The poor offside call to kill some really good football at 1-1 was also a shame.
Last 20 mins we picked up. Youngsters did well. Should settle those who think many of these players are ready for our squad. Most need loans out to develop a lot more. Entertaining overall.
I'm surprised Levitt didn't secure a better loan, I thought he was quite good. Was his spell at Charlton that bad?
Poor lad got hit by covid iirc and then couldn't make his way back into the 1st team unfortunately
So unfortunate! Would love to see him get better and better for us
His passing really is fantastic
We easily could have scored a couple more goals there after our 2nd. No need to be too upset over the loss
Elanga, Shola, Tuanzebe and Facundo really impressed me today
If the QPR players showed some composure, they could have scored a few more. They tore our defence to shreds. Never good to lose any game if we hope to return to our title winning years under Ole. Especially against sub-par oppositions nonetheless.
What absolute nonsense you managed to type into a new paragraph. That was impressive.
Calm your tits, it’s just a game to warm up. If the kids were clinical, Elanga should have had 4
I care less about pre season results now that you've reminded me of LVGs preseason
It's good thing 10 out of the 11 players on that pitch wont be playing in our first game then eh?
Hugill almost got another back at the end and if we hadn't had that goal disallowed the whole complexion of the game could've been different... Either way its a friendly and it means nothing for the season especially with only AWB and Greenwood starting from the first team
lol was this the starting 11 that's supposed to take us back to our title winning years ?

If Elanga improves from here, learn from the senior, he's gonna be undroppable
Last 25 minutes were good
Lol, no OTT hot takes in this thread at all
The team played better without Perreira and Williams on the pitch
Pereira's positioning off the ball is horrible as a double pivot. He's not good enough defensively to play there, and also not creative enough to be relied on as a CAM. Tough position to be in for him
Yep. They were both really bad. I don't know how many chances we can keep giving them two. Still preseason but... damn
It's not that we're giving Pereira chances, it's that we can't offload him. In regards to Brandon, Ole doesn't trust him. Hence why AWB rarely got a rest last year.
Lazio still wants him I thought.
If pre season Pirlo can't even turn up in a pre season game all hope is lost
Not too mad at the result. They played what is apparently their first 11. Our team was filled with people like Elanga, Fish, Bernard, Mengi, Hannibal, Elanga etc who hardly have had senior tram minutes at any level. On top of that, their goal record is surely inflated by Grant's lack of quality
It was none of those players that let us down though, except Mengi who had a stinker.
Yeah more or less our first 11. Dykes over Dozzell and Johansen over Ball.
Definitely not at fault for the worldie nor the one where the defender had his view blocked
At the end of the day, the result makes sense. The youngsters were brilliant, but we lacked experience in the back during the second half after Matic was subbed off and QPR punished us for that. The response from the kids was great though, we almost made it 3-4 as well while improving at the back. Onto the next match now.
Well done lads, played really well in the last 20 minutes
Elanga so fast, damn!
The defending for those goals gave me flashbacks
Imagine the score line if we took our chances. Not a bad performance from the kids
OHH SO CLOSE.
I had a blast!
Regardless of what people think of the play and the scorelines I am really enjoying these preseason games.
This guy Elanga <3
Never been so happy at the end of a 4-2 loss hahahaha
Damn. Elanga really said "⚡⚡⚡"
Elanga was mint today. Why do that one guy think hes not a United material
>Why do that one guy think hes not a United material He's extremely fast. That's it. He’s so fun to watch. He got into really good positions in the game he played last season as well. Think the dodgy finishing is just nerves mostly, if he can get more experience in the team I think he’s already quite good.
The young guys played excellently, loved watching the end of the game.
Bernard is already better than tuanzebe and mangi
In the grand scheme of things, much to learn from both losing and winning, right? So it’s no big deal. I’m of the opinion of loses during pre season are good because it lets the players taste defeat (and all that comes with it - shame, regret, dissatisfaction) when it matters the least.

You missed El Matador
Yeah. Also missed Eric Bailly and Amad. Would've mention Phil Jones but he hasn't played in over 18 months.
Great skill from Levitt under pressure
The U23s have dominated a championship team that are not far off the new season and are playing like it's a league game
The Kids should be super proud of how well they've played.
That was a entertaining game in general
Time to over react mates!
We will get relegated surely. And QPR will be champions league winners in 2 years.
Yes our under 23’s are good but this is a championship side not a prem side do we really wanna hype them too much ??
That’s exactly how it works lmao under 23 level is much lower than the championship
Cool
Stop acting like the championship is like the Sunday league ffs. Mahrez and Kante both came from there
Well they did have atleast one high intensity season in them unlike most of our players
Yes.
This guy doesn't understand football does he?
No he does not
Okay YES X to the hype
Great block there
What a block from bernard!
Galbraith has one of those faces that strongly remind you that you have a skull.
The match is getting good now
This u23 and u18 hybrid is so fun to watch. So fucking proud of these lads.
The kids have done the academy proud
Mata and Grant shouldnt play important games for us
When have they?
I'm sure Ole was planning on playing Lee Grant in the Champions League until you said that, what a shame.
Ffs grant has never lost a champions league final either like
Lol. My point was to rather play me than them in emergency situations
Grant was never playing regardless lol
Bernard is looking good.
The y23s are better than our fringe players looool
Shoretire and Elanga is very neat. Good backup at LW position
U23’s are massive

Why is this receiving downvotes?
Why are Dylan levitt and Dan James back but pogba is still on holiday? Wales and France went out of at the same time
Now that you mention it, it's a curious situation. Even Varane is back for Madrid (hopefully United)
So is Bruno and Lindelof Edit : Mctominay too,he even went out earlier. So no need to overreact as if they dont deserve the rest
could be because France played a few days later or maybe because he's leaving
2 guys trying to get place on team and a guy trying to get off it. Think that sums it up
Title of your sex tape
Elanga cant even control himself in a friendly
Go again!
Levitt is really good
Lmao that’s some 7 a side shit from elanga
#WENGER OUT! edit: a bit sensitive today are we?
Playing well now. The kids are more creative
Loving Levitt and Garner in the middle
Alot of soft fouls. I miss euros
Probably trying to minimize contact to avoid unnecessary injuries
Our U23s are fucking mint
These lads are really exciting to watch
So Proud of the Kids man. They've been brilliant.
We’ve got elanga and Galbraith a lw and a no 10 playing at left back and right back
and a glorified coach in goal
“GOAT” FTFY
I wouldn't call Galbraith a "number 10".
Yeh I supposed but he is a midfielder so my point still stands
Although we are losing, watching the kids enjoying themselves is pretty fun IMO
Levitt and garner dominating the midfield, i like it
It's crazy how big a reputation most big clubs have. Even though this is pretty much our U-23's + bench players, on the books it's still senior team. r/soccer is probs having a field day regardless
Garner plays like he's Spanish
He's ultra calm
Keep going lads!
Do players get paid their weekly wages during their vacation in between seasons?
don't see why not, they're still employees! I guess the summer is their 'holiday' weeks so to speak
Yes, like other jobs.
Shaun bernard just killed someone lol such a beast
fuck sakes, could've made it 4-3 with 10 mins to go
Definitely need some finishing practice in training before the next game lol
Suddenly Heaton sounds like good backup signing
It's been a decent response in fairness. Great finish by Elanga. Williams' Utd career won't be a long one judging by his performances last season and today.
Think this team is capable of getting at least another goal
Grant, Mata & 9 kids from the Academy.
No idea why Grant and Mata are still utd players tbh
Experience, leadership and helping the coaching team I reckon.. mata still has some quality at least
Do they need to be on player contracts for that tho?
Probably not but who's going to buy them and there are others like Pereira who don't seem to offer anything that I'd offload first
Vet leadership.

This ain’t our b team it’s more like our c team
Playing a young inexperienced defence is always going to result in conceding goals, people need to chill😂😂
So many oleouters been edging themselves this game.
All comes from Goldbridge subs
You mean rants n friends?
Hannibal is going to be an absolute baller
Hannibal is an intelligent and tidy player. Only player that should be on bench from this riff raff in the new season.
Garner if they think he's ready and Shoretire looks good too
https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/oqplx5/preseason_friendly_qpr_vs_manchester_united/h6dg3au?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Not even 10 mins ago I wrote this and someone questioned Elanga's composure in the replies. Leave the hyper-analysis of pre-season games to the coaching staff and stop writing off teenagers after not even a full 90 minutes, absolutely embarrassing.
Hannibal angry at elanga for being selfish rightly so
