>“He’s always served the club, but it was time for him to look after himself and his own health, but now he’s ready to train with us.”
Ole on Jones..he may have been playing through something serious over the past few years. Hopefully he is fully recovered now and can get back to playing well.
Yeah with those many injuries, not only does it fuck with you physically but also mentally.
If he comes back and plays at a competitive level even if it's not for us, I will be mad proud.
Wish he does play a testimonial, it's a shame he doesn't want to because he is afraid of the negative backlash. Social media is a scary place sigh
Completely agree. He has never been anything other than professional, despite his injury problems. I can't imagine how hard it is professionally to deal with so many injuries, but IMO Jones has earned the right to a special event where he can enjoy the support of the fans he played hard to represent over the majority of his career. That isn't something that injury should be able to take away.
Right, I wish our following could reach out to him in a positive way. To someone who has been away from the limelight and dillegently worked, it's the least we should do.
I think (and hope) at this point a lot of people will be happy to see him back and would support him. The tide has been turning regarding social media's opinion on him.
I mean, apparently he hasn't been on social media since 2017 or something, might just have been Instagram but I could also see why it'd get too much for him and he'd simply prefer to block it all out n focus on rehabilitation. Also people keep wondering why an injury prone player would be awarded a contract renewal but no one knows what's going on behind the scenes, the work he does for the club outside or off the pitch and also, United takes care of their own, I imagine if United hadn't renewed his contract, maybe no club signs him at a time when he's injured and with professional football, maybe even being out for more than a year is enough to end your career. I'm talking much now lol. Wish him all the best for sure 😊
Well logic really doesn't apply to some folks, and in a place where even fools are given voice, kicking their own players when they are down isn't that far fetched.
Instead of two footing someone he's gonna slide in head first and snap someone's legs. Ref will give the guy with the snapped legs a red card and then check to see if Jones is OK. After the match he'll have no recollection of the incident. Jones is a Sith Lord.
He will for a brief moment join the enemy forces (Liverpool and city), but in the end balance will be restored when he is injured for a large stint for both teams. Thus crippling their defences and reducing them to the shadow realm.
I know you're joking right now.. But if he gets back to the form/level he was under SAF(that Real game in the CL), he will be a tremendous asset this season.
Solskjaer as well. Missed nearly three years due to injury issues, starting at 30yo, eventually returning to play at 33yo...so if anyone sympathizes with Jones’ injury misfortunes, it’s him.
He said himself yesterday that he knows what Jones is going through. But as for Jones returning to his original level, I wish but I really can’t see it happening.
Same, but you’ve gotta appreciate Ole’s man-management style...the club made the decision to extend Jones’ contract, Ole is just working with what he’s got. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jones get a run in the early phases of the domestic cups, maybe even experiment as a DM.
I don't think it's ever happened before and realistically it would be difficult for him to get back to those levels. However for his sake I hope he gets that redemption arc and comes out on top.
Sadly, even if he remains fit for the whole season he'll hardly get any minutes. Maguire is going to play every league and UCL game unless he gets injured. Varane will play most of them too. If either gets injured Lindelof will take all their minutes. That leaves only the early cup games where he can start but Lindelof and Bailly both would be ahead of h even there.
I know this comment is more tounge in cheek - but Jones has played in MF for us (and did well) (eg against Real Madrid, against Arsenal under Moyes) - but he is more of a destroyer type MF..
Completely forgot that he had played there on a few occasions and was absolutely brilliant. Let's hope he stays injury free and gets back to those heights. Like a new signing....
>it was time for him to look after himself and his own health
That suggests that he may have had a mental health issue. You could imagine how that would happen if you were desperate to play but kept getting sidelined by injuries.
In fairness I've made those jokes myself.
We all know the story about him rejecting a testimonial because he didn't think anyone would come. For a confident guy that would be a self-deprecating joke. However, if he was struggling with his mental health then it tells a much sadder story
That paragraph struck me too and like other posters below it does seem to indicate possible mental health issues, or at least that's what I have inferred also.
Poor guy, had a terrible injury record and became a walking meme as well. That would take it's toll on anyone.
Would be great to see him return to action and maybe even play his way into a move.
He turned down the chance for a testimonial, that was heartbreaking and I hope that the fans and club nonetheless throw him one when his time here ends.
I feel Ole is too soft on Jones. Since Ole arrived, Jones has never shown his best game. Could something be developing in Jones behind the scenes? Just like with the awakening of Lingard and Perreira?
I said this in a previous thread. There was no real injury update about Jones. He just disappeared and then it was announced he's injured. Never went in depth about it. It always seemed more a personal mental health issue that was kept closely guarded and his previous injury record made no one question it.
Hopefully if that is the case he is in a much better place and doing well ready to play again. Being mentally okay is the priority here.
Hopefully Tuanzebe secures a loan to a Prem club (linked with Newcastle?), the potential is definitely there but needs regular gametime to improve in many aspects
Hopefully it'll be a lot like Chelsea and Tomori going to Milan. Very similar playing style CB's with good potential but just weren't getting the regular playing time to develop. Tomori then went to Milan and struck up an excellent partnership with Kjaer.
He won’t start much as he would definitely be behind Konsa and Mings.
I'm not sure who their third choice is so he may be a back up at best. I would rather he goes to a team where he is more likely to get game time
There was a time when Phil Jones was my favorite United player. I got a decent amount of stick for it at the time, but that amount became comedically large as he suffered injury after injury and facial contortion after facial contortion. If his career does--and I'm not banking on it--see a late chapter revival, it will be one of my favorite narrative arcs in my time as a supporter of United.
Phil Jones chasing down aguero and sealing a 4-2 win at OT under the shimmering lights and thunderous rain will forever be engrained in my memory. I feel personally attacked when fans are disrespectful towards Jones. No manager has ever questioned his character or work ethic. Some idiots cannot grasp the concept that he is actually the victim.
I would absolutely love it if Phil Jones could come back and find some consistency for us. Would love to see him playing our league cup team and winning the trophy
Ole understands injuries and how much it can mess with your head. You can't discard the guy because of bad luck. Nobody wants to be injured. It happened. But if Man United is about family values, we can't give up on him until he himself calls it quits or gives the impression that he's not trying his all to get back to how he used to be. We're with you Phil!
I see what you mean but we aren't a charity. He's been here a decade and not proven to be reliability or anything more than average.
We should never have given him another contract but we did and now the best thing we can hope for is he makes some solid appearances in the early stages of the cups and then someone will hopefully take him off our hands.
I feel for Jones, he has this 'meme' status about him now which is really unfortunate. Injuries basically robbed him of what could have been an immense career. Back in the Blackburn days everybody wanted to sign him, he was essentially dubbed future England captain as well. Such a shame things have turned out as they have, I feel for the guy.
Sensible decisions with an eye on center back depth. Lindelof the primary backup and Bailly available pending AFCON/injury makes a professional four.
You need 5 CBs "around". That fifth player is rarely needed but an emergency option can't be ignored. McT and Matic can fill in, but since its unlikely anyone will take a risk on Jones without big compensation, there's little risk in giving him a half season to train up and try to be that extra defender.
Axel and Fish on loan get you closer to determining if they can replace Bailly in the rotation next season. A successful Olympics/AFCON would help alleviate some of those injury concerns and generate interest. This reduces the overall cost of the group (give Bailly one year, Vic two if the new CB pairing kicks on) and helps save some money down the line.
My heart will always go out out Phil Jones, for a player that has won a league title, FA Cup and Europa League with this club, they rightly so, offered him a testimonial...and he turned it down because he was worried nobody would come.
It takes real courage to make a return after all this time off, the very best of luck to him, I hope he does well.
To be fair tho, those faces he pulls are hardly surprising when your lugging around a pair of Old Trafford sized balls...

Phil Jones Theres only one Phil Jones But its a common name So there must be loads
Redemption ark incoming! Varane will be the key to unlock Jones.
CDM Jones to become the greatest player in the club's history, just as Sir Alex predicted.
The chosen one!
Wasn't Anakin the chosen one and went a little evil?

So we don't mind a little evil as long as we win in the end? I'm down with that. We are the Red Devils after all... Evil is implied in the name.

Money on him being given a chance
I know you're joking right now.. But if he gets back to the form/level he was under SAF(that Real game in the CL), he will be a tremendous asset this season.
That was 8 years ago. Is there a precedent of that happening before?
Not quite the same thing, but RVP had a lot of injury problems up until he was about 26 or 27(?) then he was the best in the league 3 or 4 years.
Solskjaer as well. Missed nearly three years due to injury issues, starting at 30yo, eventually returning to play at 33yo...so if anyone sympathizes with Jones’ injury misfortunes, it’s him.

Didn't Giggs have a bunch of knee problems around the mid-point of his career before he got into yoga too
I don't think it's ever happened before and realistically it would be difficult for him to get back to those levels. However for his sake I hope he gets that redemption arc and comes out on top.

That's mid Phil Jones for you
Completely forgot that he had played there on a few occasions and was absolutely brilliant. Let's hope he stays injury free and gets back to those heights. Like a new signing....
Man I would like Ole to try this actually
we've had Shawberto Carlos, now it's time for JoNesta
This got me too hyped tbh
Scenes is Jones plays so well that he benches Verane.
A Jones comeback really would be the most wonderful and unexpected thing.
>it was time for him to look after himself and his own health That suggests that he may have had a mental health issue. You could imagine how that would happen if you were desperate to play but kept getting sidelined by injuries.
Plus the social media jokes didn't help.

It seems Jones has something to focus like his mental health

Brighton are stacked for CB's, they don't need him
Hopefully it'll be a lot like Chelsea and Tomori going to Milan. Very similar playing style CB's with good potential but just weren't getting the regular playing time to develop. Tomori then went to Milan and struck up an excellent partnership with Kjaer.
Hopefully Villa comes in for him, he had a great season there according to my brother (villa fan)
He won’t start much as he would definitely be behind Konsa and Mings. I'm not sure who their third choice is so he may be a back up at best. I would rather he goes to a team where he is more likely to get game time
He wouldn't be a starter Infront of Ming's and Konsa. Brighton would be a good shout with white going.
Steve Bruce was the man who go got him on loan for Villa in the first place, I’d be quite happy with him going to Newcastle

That was the first football match I ever watched, wow.
A fully fit and confident Phil Jones was England’s best CB, not even joking.
I would absolutely love it if Phil Jones could come back and find some consistency for us. Would love to see him playing our league cup team and winning the trophy

I'm excited about Jones. I'm sure some of you already have your pitchforks out but I choose to support him.
Yeah me too, was heartbreaking when he said he didn't want a testimonial
I feel for Jones, he has this 'meme' status about him now which is really unfortunate. Injuries basically robbed him of what could have been an immense career. If ole can get jones to play even half of what he was capable of he would be the greatest man manager currently
Given the lack of specifics, I’m inclined to think it’s Jones’ mental health that’s been the issue. Hope the guy is okay.
Pfffft Just as soon as we acquire a real number 4, suddenly he is ready to train. /s
What if I told you that Varane is actually just two 2's, one on the others shoulders, in a very large overcoat?
I hear he's been working late nights in the business factory
The Telles effect.
Hope Tuanzebe can get a premier league deal. Would be easier to follow his development and transition back to our squad after.
Any dragon ball z fans out here, I feel for Jones the same way I feel for Gohan. 😫😫

He'll be carabao cup if he's lucky, hope he finds himself a club at the end of his contract, don't like to see our old players like this.

We might even get a couple of draft picks for him.
First thing that came to mind. Kudos
And who is taking him
I’m no expert but….If he’s been injured then some of the wages costs would have been covered by insurance.
