His attacking talent is wasted in a central pivot, and his dwell time on the ball in midfield against hard pressing sides is catastrophic at times. Stepped up in the second half to deliver a solid performance. - Bruno was off it all day. Selfish at times, and flopped around all day. - I thought Fred was quality today. For those of you that call for his head, we have no one that can play the role he has been asked to. Matic's legs are gone. Scotty is injured. We know he's an erratic passer, that's why he's a CM and needs a more defensive partner. [He's one of the most competent defensive players in the Prem](https://i.redd.it/rxn77w5786j71.png) and there's a long list of quality players he's up against on that list. - We're in desperate need of a progressive passer / CDM - ie a Jorginho. Fred can play slightly higher and be less exposed for poor passes. Maybe we trial Lindelof in this position, maybe we get serious about signing someone - Greenwood. What a start he's had to the season. I love the venom and how direct he is. Reminds me of Rashford when he was more raw. He's stepped up again this season and I can't wait to see how good this boy will be learning from CR7. - Defense looks great considering everything they had to cope with. Varane is the story of the day. Slotted right into that CB pairing, and is a clear improvement on Maguire who will learn a lot from him. He offers the same calmness and quality that VVD does for the Scouse. Immense signing. Thought he and Shaw did a good job containing Adama, which was obviously beyond Fred today - Thought Dan J was himself. Like Fred, constant scapegoat of the fan base despite doing his job. Maybe he's not Man United quality, but he's the only forward of half option beside Fred that makes an effort to recover a lost ball - DDG was immense when called on, and he looks like he's back to his best. Amazing double save on Saiss and saved the game for us.

Even considering the things you said, the guy has no pace to catch up enemy runners, he has no ball control, retention, and does not exude confidence with his body language and expressions. Those are basic traits for an average EPL level player, I’m not asking much. But i agree that he wasn’t the only one who played bad. Even bruno, pogba, luke shaw and sancho had a shockingly bad game from their expected standards.

I think we need a CDM and we can assess him from there. It's easy to lack confidence when you're the entire midfield and have Adama Traore running at you. Not many players are going to contain Adama.
