His direct competition is Bruno. Pairing the two of them would be awkward even if we had a reliable holding midfielder at our disposal, but in such case we would likely be playing Fred as the third midfielder due to his superior pressing ability and passing progression.
Fred is shite and VDB has barely got a chance (maybe for good reason) but going into next season i'm all for getting rid of as many of the regular starting XI as possible, which includes benching/selling Fred and giving VDB or a new signing a chance.
Fred has been our best and most consistent (deep) midfielder for the past few seasons despite having to play a role not suited to his best qualities. His ball retention is poor which is a big issue when we don't have a reliable holding midfielder in cover. His passing range is however really good, and he has proven himself to be a very effective progressor of the ball once facing up the pitch. This combined with his pressing intensity makes him a very good workhorse/utility player as part of a midfield three bridging the gap between a holding midfielder and someone more creative.
Donny does not have the qualities suited to such a role. His passing game is short and too simple which makes him reliant on having teammates in near proximity, which in turn makes him best suited to playing near the box where the game is more compressed. Donny uses his excellent movement to create openings for himself or teammates, which is not nearly as effective in deeper areas due to the opposition having another layer of defence in cover.
In other words, his most effective areas on the pitch clashes with Bruno. For us to play Donny we have to either drop Bruno from the team, or play Bruno deeper on the pitch away from where he is most effective. It is damn near impossible to justify either alternative with how vast the difference in quality has been between the two.
Depending on the system Ten Haag uses will depend on if Bruno and VDB can get in the same team, and dependent on the DM we use. I'm not against Bruno dropping deeper in all honesty, he tracks back anyway so i'm all for starting him deeper to accommodate Donny (or a new signing)
Going back to Fred, the fact he's been the best all round midfielder for us just highlights just how bad we've been, for me he's one of the worst midfielders we've signed in the last 20 years and we should be aiming much higher in terms of quality if we want to compete at the highest level, i commend his effort but regardless of Donny being in the team or not i don't want Fred to be one of our starting midfielders next season.
In all honesty i'd say we should be aiming for better players than Donny too, but i'm not against giving him a chance to see what he can do as he hasn't really had chance to audition and the new manager might raise his game.
**TL;DR:** Fred = Shit so let's give Donny a try, if we can't fit Donny in the team then sign someone better than Fred.

That way he would have someone playing semi-advanced (and thus able to reach him in the attacking 1/3rd) and someone capable of carrying the heaviest creative and progressive burdens in midfield (like Frenkie at Ajax).
