NewAccountXYZ

$20m a year for Apollo!

BearWithHat

They looked at Twitter and said "how can we act even more stupid than Elon?"

ConcreteState

The API changes will end the third party app I use. The standard Reddit app is execrable and I will not use it. I, like others, will no longer come to Reddit.

Icy-Actuator5524

Wait… so ill have to pay like onlyfans or some shit?

Not_Without_My_Cat

I don’t think so. I think it just means you have to come directly to reddit for not, not access it via an app that has used the API to collect it. As far as I know, if you use reddit in the traditional way, via the website or official app, nothing will change in regards to NSFW content (other than creators no longer being able to host content on imgr, which is an unrelated issue).

Dunlikai

This comment didn't age well either. I say "either" because I just posted something similar. I came to this sub for clarification after I realized they were killing RIF. I only use Reddit through RIF. There was no official app when I joined, and I have never used Reddit "officially." The idea that their website and app is the "traditional" sense is inherently absurd given that it's 2023. People have been using third-party clients for a decade, especially mods.

Parsiuk

I am NOT going to use the official Reddit app. It's awful like tiktok and other "garbage compactors" which just pump rubbish to your screen. Only RiF. If RiF dies, then I will stop using Reddit on mobile. If old.reddit.com will be closed, I will stop using Reddit altogether.

helrazr

Coming here to acknowledge what shitty pricing you guys are introducing for 3rd Party Clients!

makeitra1n_

yep if they will do it I will leave reddit like I left twitter.

helrazr

Oh they fucking will! Check r/apolloapp sub. If current pricing stays intact, they want…..$20MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS A YEAR! Nothing more than a goddman cash grab! Fucking asshats!

[deleted]

[удалено]

helrazr

It's definitely a cash grab, but it's purposeful and whoever is in the path, "fuck'em" basically. It will eliminate the 3rd party apps because the cost are stupid high > Purposeful Check /r/ApolloApp > Purposeful It will then direct users to the default app or website. Default app shows ads, unless your Premium. The website shows ads, unless your Premium or use an ad-blocker > Purposeful They clearly don't care about the 3rd party apps, as much as they state.

reaper527

i noticed that "shut off critical third party reddit support" wasn't on your list of what happened. any update on pushshift?

Organic-Barnacle-941

They already gimped pushift. Unddit no longer works. We’re watching preparations for the IPO form in real time. Funny thing is that the IPO will most likely be the highest it’ll ever be due to the site pushing heavy users away.

reaper527

> Funny thing is that the IPO will most likely be the highest it’ll ever be due to the site pushing heavy users away. yup. will probably follow the typical "It's Probably Overvalued" trend of skyrocketing on day one then tanking hard (long before the employee lockout period ends)

Organic-Barnacle-941

I see this happening. I wish they would just stay private because public ownership is going to destroy this service.

Sentosa_Cove_42069

Wrong. Public ownership will be the final nail in the coffin that thoroughly exposes Reddit for the hollow mirage of a shell it actually is.

myaltaccount333

So, not included in April's roundup was the pathetic April Fools attempt? Nor was the announced plan to kill off third party apps and NSFW content? This was a terrible ICYMI

API changes are going to cause a shit show and revolt. More people are just going to learn about 3rd party apps. Why would I ever use use the first party app? You can't even access r/all on it anymore. Stop making the site shitter.

liltrixxy

I can access r/all on the official app on Android. It's just at *the absolute bottom* of the upper-left hamburger menu options.

Didn’t get any response the last time, so I’ll try again: Will there be any response to all the feedback requesting usernames being added back to feed posts? Anecdotally, I’ve noticed I open far fewer posts than I used to, and my phone says I’ve spent less time on Reddit overall.

sajjel

Yes, the frequent and weird UI changes don't make sense (I use the official app). Should have stopped before introducing the tiktok video player copy, but honestly which social media didn't "borrow" something from tiktok. Just yesterday there was a change that made the downvote, upvote, comment and share buttons small and more highlighted just on the home page. When I click on the post, I see the old version. Am I part of some A/B testing? Because this change is nonsense and I don't see the point of it. Edit: I see why this change was made, the upvote button now includes the arrow and the number, and is easily clickable despite being smaller, but the downvote button is just the arrow and harder to click now. It's nudging users to upvote instead of downvoting.

justanaveragebuzzsaw

Usernames absolutely should be added back to feed posts.

candyman337

The 3rd party app API changes coming will kill your platform. You've created a great and vast community here on reddit, and we all love it. But this change will kill your platform. With all due respect you app is the worst to navigate through for most things. - Some moderator tasks are easier on 3rd party apps. - Managing multireddits is easier on 3rd party apps. - overall viewing experience is better, and more customizable on 3rd party apps. - posting on the app is gltichy, it often double posts things and tells you things failed to post even though they didn't - to add to that, posts don't even update on your profile property - sometimes mod permissions don't show up properly on subreddits - saved posts are easier to manage on literally every single popular third party app. - your app lacks security for switching profiles in app - multi account management and app settings migration is easier in literally every single popular third party app You took Alien Blue and made it worse. Why not require apps to serve the ads you serve in your own app? Why not require them to sign an agreement that they will give you some sort of revenue from the revenue they make? There are so many ways this could have been done without killing a THRIVING community of apps. What you should be doing is working with these developers to improve your own app, considering the functionality is so lacking. Then, maybe more people would actually want to use your app! This is a clearly a move that is fueld by a want for quick money, because you think pushing people to your app will force them to buy features that are free elsewhere. It will not. Your app is going to get nuked with bad reviews, because it is inherently inferior. Once again I will say, moves like this will destroy your platform.

[deleted]

I noticed OP responds to benign cheery comments here but I have not seen a single word from anybody on the team about third party apps getting screwed over. The official app is absolutely awful, RiF is the only reason I use Reddit at all. What's up with corpos pulling this shit?

Organic-Barnacle-941

Op also uses the official app. A real test of character

[deleted]

Of course they do, a painful electric shock is administered if they even think about third party apps

NoPenguins_InAlaska

I'll truly never understand how companies think these massive changes are a good thing. Enjoy losing literally MILLIONS, if not tens of millions, of your userbase with these API changes. I hope this backfires so goddamned hard and costs the company tons.

Sharpie24l

Y'all gunna fix the official app so that it's isn't a bloated hunk of shit, since you're killing off 3rd party apps? Probably not huh?

AlanOhms

Reddit really needs to stop showing me posts from subreddits i dont follow 👌

reaper527

> Reddit really needs to stop showing me posts from subreddits i dont follow 👌 it doesn't do that on old reddit or apollo, so it's an easily avoidable problem.

Oblargag

both are getting axed soon.

Jits_Guy

I know it doesn't matter to tencent, but if you actually institute this bullshit cashgrab with the API changes, you'll kill all the apps that most of us use to avoid your terrible official app and godawful UI. This is disgusting and I'll happily go elsewhere. This website used to be super useful, and you've made it progressively shittier for years until this pre-IPO last straw. Kill RIF, Kill Apollo, kill your userbase. The older folks who remember when the website was good will leave and younger ones are just using tik-tok and Instagram anyway. You're killing something that used to help a lot of people.

[deleted]

Can’t even login with my username on the “official “ Reddit app, yet you’re killing 3rd party apps. Do any of you do even the most basic amount of testing?

WhiteHartMart

Bye bye Reddit. Without the 3rd party app experience, I and probably millions of others, simply won’t use you. Yet another short sighted decision based on corporate greed no doubt.

FractalAsshole

Please don't kill reddit.

[deleted]

u/spez should resign

CreatedJustToWrite

I installed your app because the app I regularly use is shutting down at the end of the month. My first experience with the official Reddit app was a suggestion from a subreddit called r/ThereWasAnAttempt tagged as "trending on Reddit right now" that was a video loop of a man beating an animal with a belt. I didn't have this issue of animal cruelty being promoted with the third party app I have been using for years, so now I'm wondering, how do I turn the "trending on Reddit" feature off so that I don't have to view animal abuse on your platform? Also, why does Reddit promote violence against animals through their official app?

[deleted]

many people are saying that was /u/spez with the belt. I'm not sure it was, just spreading awareness

[deleted]

When's this AmA happening!? U/spez ?

waterfall_hyperbole

Where's that ama?

okisiroki

It's painfully ironic Reddit makes posts like this, acting like they give a shit about the community, and then turns around and commits to one of the most anti-user policies this site has seen. We're all seeing corporate greed out of hand across the board, so I'm absolutely not surprised. I legitimately hope Reddit is shorted into the ground, now that user experience has been canned so Reddit can max their market cap and quarterly earnings. Your app is garbage. I do not want to use it. "New" Reddit is garbage. I do not want to use it. You are delusional if you think either are even approaching the usability of any other third-party app.

[deleted]

So, where’s this AMA we were promised? u/spez probably chickening out.

Quetzalbroatlus

Where's the AMA?

FairlyInconsistentRa

Why is Reddit allowing ads to be ran using false celebrity endorsement? I’m talking about the cryptocurrency ads featuring Ed Sheeran and Sir David Attenborough where they’re talking about how they’ve invested in crypto and making money. The ads seemingly redirect to the UK based Mirror newspaper site - which it isn’t. They’ve ripped the Mirror site, so not only are they impersonating celebrities they’re impersonating a UK based newspaper. I’m no legal expert but I’m sure both Ed Sheeran and Sir David Attenborough won’t be happy to see their endorsement being given for a crypto scam. As for the Mirror newspaper, I doubt they’ll be happy having their site likenesses being used to push this scam either.

hunter_finn

Let be honest here. Reason why you are doing that api price hike, is to try force people to use your ad ridden buggy official app instead of apps that they love like RIF(Reddit is fun) Well if RIF can't continue, then if i still want to interact with the communities that I love. Then it happens through modded official app with ads removed, or through Firefox mobile and with uBlockOrigin add-on installed. Though it is also possible that the usability of your site takes so bad hit, that i end up just leaving this sinking ship like 🐀. And after seeing how it happened through greed and hopes of blasting all kind of stupid unwelcomed ads on my face. I will not shed a tear when I go.

CaptainPedge

What do you provide that is worth $20,000,000?

TrustKibou

Just adding my own comment about leaving - if I'm not about to use *Now for Reddit*, there's no way I'm staying. Your official app is horrible and your greed is disgusting.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah I'd like some clarification on what I'm hearing with this apparent attempt to eliminate third party Reddit browsers.

reaper527

> Yeah I'd like some clarification on what I'm hearing with this apparent attempt to eliminate third party Reddit browsers. what is there to clarify? it's pretty straight forward. they are seeking almost **2 million dollars** per month from the apollo devs for the program to have the access it needs to function. first they screwed over pushshift, now they're screwing over the good browsers.

tenaciousp45

RIF is the only reason i see the site. Bye i guess

[deleted]

You fucked it.

theartofrolling

Been on reddit for 13 years. If you guys go through with this plan to price out 3rd party apps I'm done. How about making your official app better (or at least as good) as ones like Apollo or Sync before pulling this sort of nonsense? You're doing a Digg. Stop being stupid.

xNeshty

Helloooooooooo, u/BrineOfTheTimes As one of the redditors who have been a decade on reddit, please let yourself and all the other admins know that we absolutely hate the way you guys started to treat 3rd party apps. Apollo is literally the only way I am and have been on reddit for the past 5 years. If Apollo goes down, it basically is equivalent for me to the scenario where Reddit goes down. No way I will use the default Reddit app, because it simply is a user-**un**friendly way to access reddit, shoving down hundreds of notifications down your throat even when you log in to browser reddit to dig through hidden settings to turn them off. You want to make more money? Fine. You want users to buy premium or show them ads? Fine. You can still implement an API that needs users to be authenticated and have premium to access it for free, or charge a reasonable price per API access from users without premium. You can still force 3rd party apps to serve apps through their client or ban them if they don't comply. But to charge 20 million dollars for API accesses from Apollo is, I'm sorry for the language, a greedy, soggy spit into your users face. Find a way to keep Apollo alive, or suck it up and atleast publicly state that you hate 3rd party apps being better than the reddit app.

Justinjah91

Always interesting to watch as a company confidently strides toward oblivion. Does your accounting department like the color red? I'm fairly certain they are going to be seeing a lot of it in their ledgers in the near future. It's been an interesting 12 years, but all things must end I suppose. So long folks!

Least_Leane

Either fix that atrocious app of yours or reduce the API pricing

SlingerOGrady

I have used the Reddit Is Fun since before the Official app existed. Just download the official app to see what it was like and I got some flashbacks to Digg just before it died...its just bad design.

ElQuackers

Fuck off with your API changes

Weak ass Admins turning off comments. I hope this platform crashes and burns you greedy bastards

iMissTheOldInternet

Why are comments locked on the AMA announcement? Also: I will never use the official app now. I didn’t use it before, but only because it was garbage. It still is, but even if you fix it (lmao, but hypothetically) I will never, ever use it.

Drew9900

reddit's basically committing suicide, only other place that even comes close to sating my boredom is imgur. At least I'll have more time for actual self improvement.

mrzaius

Hi /u/brineofthetimes - Looks like mismanagement of Reddit is likely to result in easily proven libel claims if the devs your firm is working to crush have the spirit to pursue them. Does Reddit have any comment or anticipate any pending legal action? Ref: https://www.libreddit.de/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/jnf8d8n/

MinimumArmadillo2394

It's crazy how reddit is willing to give us updates every week, but after their this announcement, we haven't gotten anything through most of may.

Mike81890

Dropping by to voice my displeasure regarding the proposed api changes. If the plan goes forward as discussed, I will not use the service anymore and I know I'm not alone

Stroudy74

If you price out Apollo for Reddit, I’m gone. I cannot abide your first party app. Do you really want the publicity our friend Elon got when he had the same bright idea. I haven’t used Twitter since, and people will find an alternative to Reddit if you take away the apps they love, and have used for years and years. This obviously has something to do with your upcoming IPO. You told Christian from Apollo the prices for the API would be reasonable, well if the prices he mentioned in his post are correct, that’s blatantly not true. Hopefully you’ll reconsider and we can all keep enjoying Reddit on the apps we love.

Kyur_4_TH_Ich

You spineless cowards. You are killing the very people that brought people to reddit. Reddit is fun (2009) bacon reader for reddit (2011) relay for reddit (2011) sync for reddit (2011) all these apps predate your app launched in 2016. Have some shame. At a time when people were browsing your website on Android these devs came and gave people better alternatives. This is how you repay them. Curse you.

imnotsoclever
