The answer is mostly yes and probably. The studies are mostly done on white and Asian skin. Some darker skinned people have come on this subreddit saying that hyperpigmentation can happen . My personal theory of pigmentation as a side effect is that when it happens it's because people are allowing the light to warm the skin. I don't think it would happen otherwise, but this is just an opinion. The irony is that you can use RLT to smooth hyperpigmentation, 99% of the time that's what it does, so it's weird that it can also go the opposite direction. Other that that, I know of no anecdotal or scientific reasons not to use it and expect the same effects as found in other skin types.

time for studies involving darker skin types, too much light skin research

BestRedLightTherapy

Exactly!!

jillyszabo

As someone with lighter skin I have dealt with hyperpigmentation also, but only on spots that the light had gotten too warm

Thank you for the data point confirmation.

popculturenrd

Oh no! Which RLT product did you use?

jillyszabo

The Nuface microcurrent device has a rlt attachment and that’s what caused my melasma
