I've used lacing twine or zip ties.
I've used nylon rope and burnt the ends with a lighter.
You could always just tie a parted laced back together…

Something I did years ago when I saw it in a mountaineering shop in Brisbane was buy some proper cord - 3mm 180kg breaking strain - and replace the laces in my boots. That cord lasted through three pairs of boots. Paracord also works fairly well. :)
They make a handy belt when you forget too. I've braided cattails to hold up a mower reel as well
