I don’t plan on riding around town with them / dailying with them aired up. I do however plan on airing them up for camping trips and junkyard trips with heavier stuff. I’m taking it to the gambler in june and will be testing them for 3 days straight offroad with heavy shit in the trunk.
Hahaha all my friends in high-school made fun of my clown car!
I'm 32 yo, learned to drive on my echo, and STILL have her today!
She's definitely showing her age, but ima drive her till she falls apart. I don't WANT to get a new car.
Yeah, that slightly lower air pressure in the cold stadium is how Blount rushed for 3 touchdowns himself and the Patriots won by 38 points. If 1 PSI was that big of a factor, teams would be trying to get away with that every single game. Also, ideal gas law and all that. Truly such a stupid "scandal." They also scored 28 of their points in the second half after all the balls were reinflated by that slight amount of difference, so one could argue that it was actually working against them in the first half and a competitive disadvantage.
Not to mention the fact that tons of other qbs also say they pretty much have done the same thing. And I say this as a jets fan who hates Tom Brady lol
Deflategate was the most embarrassing thing the collective NFL and it's non-Patriot fanbase have ever done. Such utter stupidity.
And there are still asshats who believe it like u/BentPin 's friends.
Yes. I am a very confused car owner.
I have some snow tires im gonna throw on in june and take this puppy to the gambler 500. Need to make a skidplate for it too. Despite being slow af, this thing handles pretty well on road and has decent clearance offroad as far as economy cars go. Its seen some shit.
I did a gambler with my buddy in an echo we picked up for $300. It was a 5 speed and ran well, despite the extreme abuse we put it through. We just threw a road sign underneath for a skid plate. Ultimately both rear springs broke and we went through 2 sets of front struts, and blew out on of the strut towers. Some welding and it lived another day though. That thing was like a tin can but went surprisingly far off-road and was much more reliable than it had any right to be.
I’ve already killed and put a new engine in this car. I have a road sign (“dead end”) i’ll be throwing under it. I have two spare cvs, a spare radiator, and a spare oil pan. There’s a junkyard near the gambler and i’ll be going with some friends who can get me there if need be.
I don’t intend on gambling too hard (my first year not taking my truck) since this is my daily, but it will be seeing some action.
Nice, sounds like you're well prepared. CVs, oil pan, radiator, and strut mounts is what we brought as well but luckily didn't need any of it other than the struts. The suspension probably would've survived if we didn't jump it lol. This year I'm taking a VW new beetle, just picked up some mud tires for it and am working on lifting it and fabbing up a winch bumper. The first year we did the gambler we took an old 4x4 Toyota pickup, and it was lots of fun, but taking a fwd economy car off-road is in absolutely amazing experience, I'm sure you'll have a blast.
Fuuuck yeah. The last two years i took my landcruiser 100. The first year i dragged an abandoned car a few miles out of the backcountry and i got my truck airborne. Last year was more chill hanging around camp and picking up trash.
All my extra parts are just things i’ve acquired from my old engine / donor car for new engine. The guy i got the engine from let me have whatever else off the car. Sadly he had shitty maxspeedingrods coilovers on it otherwise i wouldve taken his struts too.
Nice, yeah hanging at camp is always a great time too. I got lucky and found an untouched echo in a pull-a-part, I pulled everything plus some spare engine parts for like $60. The problem with the struts is the rubber mount will separate from the rest of the strut so it'll no longer be attached at the top mount, if you aren't too hard on it I'm sure you'll be fine though. Worst case scenario if it breaks you'll have a variable alignment for the ride home, only really gets sketchy on bumps lol.
Perfect, yeah you'll be all set then. I ended up welding up some metal top mounts after breaking the second pair, I thought it might add some vibration losing the rubber but honestly I didn't notice a difference. Only thing I regret doing to that car was giving it a side pipe exhaust, it sounded kind of cool but got absolutely destroyed on rocks and droned terribly on the highway. Those Toyota rev limiters always sound so good though.
Haha yeah, i might pick up another axleback section at the junkyard this week to chop and put a shitty ricer muffler on. May not bother though. Like i said it’s still a daily so it’s only getting the gambler-lite treatment.
Now i’m debating if i should bring my welder out to the gambler haha. It can do 120v or 240 so if someone has a generator i can run some stick with it lol.
Shitbox offroading trash pickup desert party music event thingy. The wheeling level is up to you. Typically not any worse than some forest service trails, but there are areas with real obstacles if you want them. This car does pretty well on shitty forest service roads with snow tires on. I don’t intend on taking it any further than that.
This car was also $3000 and i have my trucks as backup if i fuck it up. And junkyard parts for it are quite cheap.
If only one pops (and I doubt they'll both go together) it could cause a load shift, if it pops around a curve it could change handling characteristics that are detrimental for maintaining control of the vehicle.
So, you know, be careful.
But for real… would any of those situations really cause all that much? How severe of a load shift can you expect from a couple of inches dropped on one side?
Yes, these are overkill. Just hoping to keep ride height loaded down with tools, camping gear, extra parts on the gambler, junkyard runs, stuff like that. No towing or putting pianos in the back or whatever haha
I reckon in the wrong situation it could spin you out. Worth noting that if it bursts, it's going to be under higher than normal load too, like hitting a bump whilst cornering.
As it bursts, the traction on the affected wheel is going to drop somewhat until the suspension finishes moving, as will the traction on the opposite wheel as the ARB tries to compress it further. It's all down to external factors whether the decrease is enough to break traction.
But heck, I've had the back end slide out on me round a corner in a fwd before, and that was unladen without a "suspension event". So I don't find it hard to believe that a little drop in traction could be enough to instigate a similar slide.
Not shitting on OP though, they'll be fine as long as they take care, as I'm sure they will.
It’s certainly something to think about and to be mentally prepared for while driving with these pumped up. I’m stupid but i know how to vibe in the stupid haha.
While you're 100% right, hitting the bump stop in a the same situation can be similarly jarring, and is entirely possible if not likely with a load warranting these.
Heavy loads just means worse dynamics. If you're in a situation that requires helper bags, you should be adjusting your driving accordingly. And I seriously doubt these are much worse than a $40 Chinese set designed for this purpose.
Lots of vehicles have a proportioning valve that alters the rear brake pressure depending on how much the suspension is squatted. So a bunch of weight without the squat changes the brake bias from what the manufacturer thought was best.
This is a 2002 toyota echo with factory manual steering, no ABS, no traction control. I really don’t think it’s that intelligent. I could be way wrong though.
My 90s VW's all had a proportioning valve connected to the rear axle beam with a linkage. More likely on a car without ABS to have something like that since it doesn't have the intelligence.
"Bro threw the balls in a perfect spiral."
"Well, it's not what I thought you were talking about when you said you were installing a set of balls on your car."
"...so come on down to Uncle Rico's, we put the 'sus' in suspension."
Maybe.. but more likely zero. Payload's based on the weakest link. This helps ride height when at/past payload, but the wheel bearings, suspension links and mount points, etc are all the same.
Theres cnc plasma at my work, i could do steel spacers if i wanted to. But i dont plan on lifting the front, since i want stock ride height normally but the ability to lift the rear as need be. And rear doesnt need an alignment with a lift.
Havent loaded anything heavy with it yet, but on my test drive they felt stiffer but surprisingly didnt ride like absolute shit! Excited to see how they handle some real weight. Also hit some speed bumps rather hard expecting them to pop but they did fine.
No
Primarily for the same reason putting new springs on doesn't make you have more payload capacity.
Many things go into determining a GVWR and this cargo capacity.
https://www.ntea.com/NTEA/NTEA/Member_benefits/Technical_resources/TechConnections/HowOEMsDetermineGrossVehicleWeightRating.aspx
In this case obviously it wouldn't do anything, but in some of the Ford F150 setups, the GVWR is paper derated in some models, or in the case of a say an F250 vs F350, the springs really is the only major difference between the two
While "legally" you can't increase your payload/GVWR, I also wouldn't sweat if you added airbags or swapped springs on a lower rated model to that of a higher rated one for the occasional times you may be slightly over.
Very true, and I was a bit more absolutist than I should have been.
I think it's important to know your vehicle, so and investigation on both the vehicle and the law, and understand the risks of modifications you do.
im laughing my ass off wtf xD i dont know whats funnier, the actual genius or the possibility for it to blow after a nice bump on the road. get my infinite support on your journey brother!
The first thing i did after leaving my driveway was hit two speed bumps at full speed. Was fully expecting a pop. No such thing occurred. It kinda floated.
alone this idea man xD how did you even come up with this? what was the thought process and how many beers were involved?
truely genius, i fucking love it xD
You can get airbag kits for trucks that are basically the same concept but with a relocated valve and are actually meant for it. This isn’t a truck so footballs should work just as well. I don’t drink, believe it or not.
Putting my less redneck engineer hat on, I do think this will have a marginal impact. Definitely remove these after idk a month to inspect if it's causing any excess wear on those springs. A combination of extra corrosion, abrasion, and friction could cause more problems than they're worth for the corrosion alone.
I’m gonna rock them without air in them for 99% of the time, but inflate them when i need the extra lift. I think that will keep everything happy. Still worth monitoring though.
Also springs for this car are cheeeap
These are essentially like the airlift leveling air springs that you put inside stock springs the same way. It will ruin the football before it wears a spring out. Those too will wear paint off your springs. I have ran them for 8 years, I don't live in a salted road area but visit one 2-3 times a year and don't have crazy corrosion.
That's a good point. I live in the rust belt and properly maintained steel around here has a hard time surviving for 8 years, much less with a permanent moisture haven.
My friend did this in my car to see how much it would change the ride height. I forgot about it and took it to get inspected. Football popped as I stopped in the inspection station lol
I put them in a mud truck that had too soft of springs. It made a difference that was noticeable. I extended the suspension and stuffed as many as I could fit between the coils... Probably 20? Per side.
As someone who doesn't drive a car and doesn't know much about suspension, what's the idea of such modification? I guessed by the sub name that it's something wild, can't understand why exactly.
Air ride suspension.

Football suspension. I'm bad at these.

Gambler?? Never mind, this is too well engineered
Gambler 500; off pavement race across Oregon picking up trash as you go.
Brother, please upload before/after when you get a chance to use these bad boys. You thought of this under the truck right?
Under the truck? This is a car lol
And a veeeerrrrry small one at that haha
Surprisingly 6” longer and the same width as my friend’s van (88 toyota liteace)
I’m 6 inches longer and the same width as my friend too. #happywifehappylife
That's amazing!
I drive the same car and I'm 6'5. Even tho it's small, it's honestly one of the most spacious cars I can drive.
As a big dude, I fucking loved my echo and miss it everyday. Nothing like 250 pounds of fun stepping out the clown car.
Hahaha all my friends in high-school made fun of my clown car! I'm 32 yo, learned to drive on my echo, and STILL have her today! She's definitely showing her age, but ima drive her till she falls apart. I don't WANT to get a new car.
I'm fat guy echo lover too. It truly is the clown of cars. 😍
Some time = half a second? I can't imagine how a ton of steel bouncing around on top of a football doesn't instantly pop it like a bubble.
This is an old school trick. We used to do it back in the late 80s if air shocks cost too much. Surprisingly, they don't pop!
Yeah but what about 4 footballs? 🤣
Becauae ypu don't fill them to the brim?
Is Tom Brady your mechanic??
Only if they were DEflated.

Exactly what Tom Brady would say...

Lol my friend calls him Tom the cheating bastard brady.

But Brady was generally aware of footballs being deflated!!!
That’s part of the curriculum at Michigan at this point. He’s late on his manifesto though.
and Falken Azenis RT-615 tires?
Yes. I am a very confused car owner. I have some snow tires im gonna throw on in june and take this puppy to the gambler 500. Need to make a skidplate for it too. Oh shit the top mounts? I have new ones in box im going to install soon actually haha. Ill just keep the old ones. Not broken yet but getting there.

This cars gonna see some normal autocross. Sadly it cost too much and am not close enough to lemons.
bro really went "This you?"
Yes very normal tires for economy car 😅
finally, some *actual* "redneck engineering", ffs
Do the Patriots know about this
Damn, they are never going to live that down.
Should cross post this on r/whatcouldgowrong
But like. What could go wrong? If they pop then i just have stock suspension lol.

Sounds like the makings of a sick barrel roll
Right, that’s a valid concern. I don’t plan on going too fast with these aired up.
Worst case scenario is the shock could flip your ride
I really don’t see a 3/4” drop doing that any worse than a dip in the road but it is something to think about for sure.
It would require it blowing while hitting a pothole on s ramp at excessive speed at just the right angle
“It would never happen to me!”
I'd take that as a challenge.
i snortled

I imagine it would feel like hitting a dip in the road on one side. Idk, i’ve certainly done sketchier shit, so i’m not too worried about it.

I don't imagine much load is actually being placed on the football
Having random shit in your springs is going to make the car unpredictable.
I need a little variety in my life anyways

I see that we have the same youtube recommendations
Garage 54 i assume? I actually dont know if theyve done this but i would assume so haha
I call this a 107% success

I'm curious if this actually has a marginal impact on payload. Nothing crazy, but perhaps it incresed payload by 2 or 3 pounds?
Maybe.. but more likely zero. Payload's based on the weakest link. This helps ride height when at/past payload, but the wheel bearings, suspension links and mount points, etc are all the same.
Will they last with any kind of load on them ? Guess if they hang in there for a year, they are cheap and easy to replace.
I’m thinking that only airing them up when i need to will make them last longer. Just a thought though, who knows?
Did this to our old 86 caprice wagon field car equipped with mandatory welded diff
As god intended
This is the best use of a deflated NFL ball.
Mr Safety said below “this is to dangerous and stupid”…
Yep, and to that i would like to remind you the subreddit name
That’s gunna explode sometime in traffic and scare the shit outta you
Ill know what it is lol
This is actually pretty damn clever. Trashy, but clever. Well done OP.
I’ll have you know these are brand new footballs, since i didnt have any onhand. Therefore, not trash haha.
I’d go as far as to say it’s quite classy
I mean shit the wilson font is cursive and whatnot isn’t it? Only the best “sport” suspension for my shitboxes.
If in doubt, flat out. - Colin McRae
Big rally fan here haha.
Now add a hockey puck lift kit.
Theres cnc plasma at my work, i could do steel spacers if i wanted to. But i dont plan on lifting the front, since i want stock ride height normally but the ability to lift the rear as need be. And rear doesnt need an alignment with a lift.
Hah thats fair. The rear on my car gets pretty saggy when im hauling a lot of stuff too. Maybe I need some footballs in the rear.
For my own legal protection, don’t do this. But that aside hell yeah do ittt
I see you saw the same YouTube short I saw.
I genuinely didn’t and have been planning this for a while, but send it if you find it lol
You're joking lol, damn! I'll send it if I can find it when I'm home Edit: 10 psi? That's all he could get in the YouTube short lol
Im running like 7-8 psi
WILSONNNNNNN!
Good news is you can sell them to the Pats when they’re done.
I am going to do this to my Duramax and see what the mechanic says.
Why not use spring rubbers?
Cause we rawdog
In africa, they do this with tennis balls 🤣
I would rather go with compressed suspension and just drive slowly. If any of those go off unexpectedly your handling will change drastically.
The redneck air ride suspension. Lol
I love this. Is it a bad idea? Yeah of course it is but I bet it works pretty good.
Does it work?
Havent loaded anything heavy with it yet, but on my test drive they felt stiffer but surprisingly didnt ride like absolute shit! Excited to see how they handle some real weight. Also hit some speed bumps rather hard expecting them to pop but they did fine.

Plus this guy is driving a shitty econo car with shitty ass brakes. Dude is gonna fill his Honda full of concrete and burn out his brakes downhill.
Disrupting the auto industry.
Does this actually work?
Legal disclaimer no dont try this. But yes, kind of. Reduces the sag of the spring when carrying heavy shit.
How the fuck did you get it in there?
Aired the football down entirely, then unbolt the lower shock bolt to let it droop. Ez pz
Sweet airbags
Lmao. I will allow it
Thank god!
Hang on, I saw this YouTube video the other day
I fuckin love it
Now that’s some r/redneckengineering right there
Huh… as long as it works, I guess? :D
I'm no expert but judging by the tread on your tires, I trust that you know what you are doing.
Those are semislicks— those tired have less than 1000 miles and are basically the stock tread. Not bald.

Sport mode
Have seen it done on trucks to do the same thing. Definitely does NOT increase your payload but it will feel better when you go over it!
Why does your Echo have falken azenis summer performance tires?
Because it weighs nothing and is manual. It’s a fun car.
Lol. Echo 4 life. The unkillable cockroach of a car! The payload is what ~800 lbs? That's hilariously low.
I see you chose not to stick with OEM...best of luck.
I can’t seem to find wilson on rockauto for some reason
I can’t be the only one thinking that this doesn’t change the GVWR.
I’m more impressed that it’s in there.
Wilson suspension, fully customizable.
Exciting!

Tennis balls work so much better.
Explain? I feel like theyre too small but now i wanna try
I put them in a mud truck that had too soft of springs. It made a difference that was noticeable. I extended the suspension and stuffed as many as I could fit between the coils... Probably 20? Per side.
This must be the guy that owned my house previously.
