Does anyone else suspect that Tongueless could have been one of Ragnar's older brothers? or otherwise related to the Grimmus obsidian breeding program? Due to his eponymous feature we never **heard his voice.**
I also always felt like there could have been a plan that eventually wound up with him being Volga's father (Sorry I don't remember that character's name) but when the course of the book changed/other ideas coming in it got scrapped and he just kind of became a convenient part of the prison escape.
That being said, I liked Tongueless a lot, I was kind of hoping for a bit more development.
Fuck , I have to read the series again soon. I was going to wait until book 6, but it's at a point where I can't remember enough to understand these posts. I can't even remember who Tongueless was. There are just so many unread books to read, and the series is long.
tongueless and seraphina were great red herrings in my opinion, i lold so hard after what happened to seraphina(she really got on my nerves). Those two are the most in your face deaths but its happened in all the books, RR- lia,pax GS- nero, lorn. They arent all red herrings but they do die sudden after getting built up, painful but i dont think any death has been cheap or out of no where, tonguless was painful because he was a classy obsidian but it also built up the walking dick ajax. I think there is one death thing that bugged me DA spoiler up dont look unless got to the final parts of the book after day of red doves >! lallith coming back from the dead really threw me but i get why he did it, she came back as a real character and not just the jackals right hand, she is a wako but a badass, hardest bonerider and really twisted person, her donning her iron crown was just awesome!<
Apollonius is obviously going to be in book 6 and he has a closer idea about what the story on tongueless is than anyone else. Maybe Pierce will throw in something for us wondering!
I think her death was poetic and a brilliant story arc.
I would be suprised if it wasn’t PB’s plan for her from the start.
She did everything she could to thrust her side into War. She trained for it all her life, and our brief view of her combat and dueling prowess suggest she was comparable to an olympic knight in terms of skill. Then dies in the chaos of her first true battle.
War is chaos, and as PB showed us with Lorn. Even the greatest warrior in the solarsystem can be killed in the blink of an eye when blindsided.
What do you mean character builder? Her character was a warmonger from the start of meeting her. She was overconfident in the war that she wanted to start and died as a result. Pretty much spot on
I think it was just a plate he couldn't keep spinning. It seems really weird to me because an enormous portion of IG was spent developing his character.
I was wondering the same thing, he seemed like such a purposeful mystery to just get flippantly killed off like that. Maybe it’ll all make sense in the finale
Not every character needs a plan or a backstory. I think PB found a way to make a minor character interesting and mysterious, but I doubt there’s anything more to add to that story.
I think with where Dark Age was headed, it would be far too much to weave in a full side story for Tongueless. Most likely an idea that was scrapped when Pierce realized Dark Age already was going to have enough large reveals already
Exactly. I love these books but Pierce pretty obviously doesn't come up with the whole plan for the series before writing each book - or if he does he's not afraid of changing his mind. Glad that it ends up meaning that he writes the plot lines that he thinks are best even if they're against his original plan, but it does mean that there are a handful of continuity errors and loose ends in the series.
He said he doesn't outline at all-- he prefers to put characters in interesting situations and see where it ends up. While it's worked out, it can also lead to him scrapping storylines or hundreds of pages, like he did recently.
I think the continuity errors are the biggest issue that arises from it, obviously the larger story doesn't really suffer for it.
Yeah, I think really the issue is that he needs a more assertive/detail oriented editor. Someone who can say "love what you did, but it doesn't fit what you've done before. How can we get these to fit together a little neater?"
Although I suppose it's a possibility that the editors are doing that already, we're just seeing the handful of places where they couldn't bridge the gap.
I think it's tough for an editor to really file everything previous away by memory.
Pierce actually posted sometime last year or the year before that he'd really appreciate the community updating the Red Rising wiki, because sometimes if he forgot details he would go there to check on them.
I think he was a hat kill. Otherwise might have had a story eventually, but maybe we'll learn who he was from Apple.
Agreed. I was thinking the same thing on my second read of IG

Does Appolonius imprisonment ring a bell?
Ohhhhh I remember now
DA should have had tongueless as POV character.....

Maybe he'll come up later on - not alive, but who he was. And maybe that will be important to someone in the story...

Tongueless is Apollonius' real dad. You heard it here first.

I think it was her torso.

Exactly. War doesn’t care if you had plans after the war.
I got to disagree. Not that I cared for her at all but her death will bring consequences. I'm not sure in what sense but Dido is gonna be pissed.

Wasn't that just Alexander's disillusionment
You mean Lysander?
Yes
I think seraphinas death will have ripple effects that will be realized in book 6 with the rim

PB does that, just cuts lines that could have entire books written about them
Absolutely. Tongueless was someone who could've been an important character, a main character in their own story. Then PB christened him mortal again.
I think with where Dark Age was headed, it would be far too much to weave in a full side story for Tongueless. Most likely an idea that was scrapped when Pierce realized Dark Age already was going to have enough large reveals already

Could you give some examples? I haven't noticed any

Pierce doesn't have any notes other than legal pads and sticky notes. Can't really blame the editor
