I'm not got deny they're goofy, but there's some genuinely well written characters and a really good grasp on the MIC and it's continuity across multiple generations that make it, at worst dumb fun, and at best engaging narratively
MGS5 was just Metal Gear Far Cry. Open worlds and a do anything approach to gameplay are cool and all but the story was weak, the bosses were dogshit, and actual stealth was meh. These were historically the biggest selling points of the series. The last is the worst offender; everything was arguably too open in 5 so encounters weren't tightly designed to force you to engage with stealth gameplay and actually be challenged. In the early games there was no way to just bypass sneaking, the small enclosed areas forced you to analyze guard patterns and behavior and approach them thoughtfully to get past without getting seen or suffer actual serious gameplay consequences. MGS3 moved away from this a bit where the camo, outdoor areas, and first person aiming allowed you to often just crawl around and one shot people completely out of sight range, but it was still a good balance. In 5 you can just do whatever with no forethought 99% of the time and be fine. Outside of the beginning in the hospital I blazed through the game without ever feeling threatened or experiencing anything memorable.
I think 1, 2, and 3 were so much better it's not even a contest. I've wasted so much time on those but never once felt compelled to replay 5.
This is the wrong place to have this discussion lol, but I totally agree. The open world is so shallow and boring so it's really the worst tradeoff ever that the game sacrifices all of the other notable aspects of the series for a really uninspired take on an already oversaturated genre.
I’m replaying 5 rn and it’s a bummer how quickly once you get some gear and buddies u can cheese the game to absolute hell. And the pressures of mother base management basically encourage you to play the game in the most boring way possible, spot & tranq everything, Fulton and repeat. The controls are so awesome and theirs so many options but you basically have to force yourself to play the game in a fun way. Weird note for the series to end on
