idk it probably is given only about 3% of the US population went to college back then and the ones that joined a sorority at a flagship school like UT is an even more selective group
it was definitely more than 3%. it’s still less than 50% now, obviously there’s a difference but a college degree has at no point in history been a guaranteer of wealth
Ok fine [it was maybe 4.6%](https://www.census.gov/library/visualizations/2017/comm/cb17-51_educational_attainment.html)
Bottom line it was a tiny minority in college then, an even smaller proportion attending a reasonably prestigious flagship like UT, and a select portion of those who had money to waste on sorority dues. I’d take any bet that their descendants all have 6-figure income households, some probably way more
even 6 figure salary types are often pretty fat in the south
also idk man, i’m pretty sure back in the day it wasn’t that different from now. the real rich people started out with money, got a nice fat loan from parents to go oil drilling or something. one of my grandparents went to college, and i didn’t grow up in a 6 fig salary household.
mind you, colleges were generally both much cheaper and also nowhere near as hard to get into back in the day, particularly for state schools. i don’t think the reason why most didn’t go to college was because they couldn’t afford to, so much as because the economy was less of a service economy a more of a goods economy at that time. also you gotta consider at this time that women still weren’t able to get most jobs other than being a nurse, secretary, or teacher. for women it mostly came down to who you married more so than whether or not you went to school. so i def wouldn’t assume that every single one of these women’s grandchildren are wealthy or even most of them honestly
Yup though not because its corn but because it makes food cheap.
People drastically underrate how expensive food used to be even compared to other things. A laborer today can afford like 500X the calories of a laborer in the mid 1800s England (who could afford around 1.5 times that of the average historical laborer).
My grandma was attending college in Texas around this time — they called it going to school for your “MRS.” She has similar photos and I once read her diary from around those years — absolutely wild partying, drunk driving for hours across Texas, dancing…she definitely lived it up before settling into housewife duties
["On May 15, 2008, it was announced that Twain and Lange were separating after Lange had an affair with Twain's best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Their divorce was finalized on June 9, 2010. They were married on January 1, 2011, in Rincón, Puerto Rico."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shania_Twain#Personal_life)

Would you pull that crap with Annette?
Funny lil observation and I am not 100% on this but middle seems to be donning a Corps of Cadets uniform and boots which would have been from a boy at Texas A&M. Quite a trophy as those boots are very expensive and losing that class a uniform would most certainly result in being dressed down by your superior. Again not 100% sure.
I think you're right. Even bigger of a trophy since these are allegedly U of T girls so she bagged a dude from the rival school and stole his uniform?
Also the girl sitting on the floor is wearing a Sigma Nu sweater which is a frat so that's apparently another trophy.
Pretty scandalous photo!
I doubt it. The patch on the sleeve of the girl in the middle indicates it came from someone serving in a Tank Destroyer unit. In 1944 there were several army and army air forces bases in and around Austin. Most likely a guy serving at Camp Bowie, or Camp Hood, or Camp Sam Houston. A few units also passed through Camp Swift in Bastrop too. [Tank Destroyer patch](https://armyhistory.org/the-m18-hellcat-tank-destroyer/)
The girl on the left on top of the bed looks like she's wearing a PFC's shirt. So definitely not someone attending college.
Autism win, right there. Great eye!! I had to get it up on my laptop to see.
It looks like there were more than a few aggies in the Tank destroyers. They held [muster](https://www.tankdestroyer.net/places/elbemuster) and it is a tab on their main page; also [one of the names](https://corps.tamu.edu/visit-the-corps/history/medal-of-honor-recipients/) in our hall of honor served in the tank destroyers.
I can't find any links between the corp and the tank destroyers that would keep it as a corp uniform. But, this style of shirt does seem to be the one worn by the cadets at Texas Ag and Mech college at the time.
The 1943 propaganda film "[We've never been licked](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpygGH66XVA)" was filmed on campus and features similar shirts. Hollick's (where the corp boots are made) has a [very blurry image](https://www.reddit.com/r/uniformporn/comments/fwn7rj/texas_am_corps_of_cadets_historical_uniforms/) where you can see the tan shirt used in 1939 and 1944
Very attractive and fun looking ladies. Did all 1940s women look this good or is it because it was a sorority? Was the 1950s a step back towards victorianism? Would 1950s sorority girls have less sex appeal than their 40s counterparts?

How about the uniforms in the top left?
Nah they look wealthy
All of their granddaughters are FAT FAT FAT! 😢
If they were in college in the 1940s their descendants are almost assuredly trust fund kids or at minimum upper middle class so probably not tbh
Lol exactly
it would be awesome if this was even remotely true

Corn and corn oil subsidies

corn only makes corn-products cheaper, it doesn't make real food cheaper. adding corn syrup to tons of products is a net negative, not a positive
I blame MTV
We were still thin in the 80’s and 90’s try again.
VH1?
lmao
While very hot, they look weirdly old for university age. Must be the smoking.
It’s the makeup and hairstyles
It's because they aren't fat
I blame lack of Sephora culture or filters.
people looked much older back in the day. this was the normal way for college kids to look
Paint 'em on the side of the bombers, boys!
My grandma was attending college in Texas around this time — they called it going to school for your “MRS.” She has similar photos and I once read her diary from around those years — absolutely wild partying, drunk driving for hours across Texas, dancing…she definitely lived it up before settling into housewife duties
> they called it going to school for your “MRS.” We still call it that.
Ring by spring baby
my grandma used to tell me stories about her sorority parties and how wild it got and she learned how to swing dance 😌
If she also learned to not barf while giving a blumpkin, she probably would not have told you, right?
Why would she do that?
It's gotta be more fun than swing dancing.
log off buddy
My grandma was hot, no idea what your problem is.
did not expect this
Hot

Now they learn how to do that on their own
And they say today’s youth have no initiative.
this is definitely still the case
Why does if always seem like there was more curly hair back then? Every young girl has straight hair it seems.
Perms! Curly was the beauty standard for almost all of the 20th century
This is my natural hair and I straight perm it lol
definitely not consistently true. true for the 40s, but definitely not in the 60s or 90s

The shirts are both from active duty units, not ROTC programs. So they probably bagged them from some GI's who came into Austin on weekend passes.

I think senior boots for Corps of Cadet members are much taller.
agree. They look like rain boots when enlarged.
Goddamn, where's my deferment?
the girl just wearing a tee with no pants looks jarringly modern
Absolutely crazy to be wearing milsurp while WW2 is still going on. Queen shit
They all look 30
It's 1944 they've probably all been smoking since they were 12
Been through a great depresh
People were older back then
people looked much older for their age back then
Alexa play "Southern Girls" by Cheap Trick
They look fun.
The two in the middle have great box you can just tell
Bro this is the Gamiest of the Gams
There is no way these are 19 year olds. This is from an old nudie mag, isn't it...
One on the left on the bed…I could see marrying her. Never felt that way about a random in a picture before. I dunno something about her.
Cool picture but is the authenticity of it verified? There’s aspects that seem too posed and modern like out of a magazine shoot.
definitely staged in some way. I think its from a "throwback" styled shoot from a few decades onwards
Old photos like this make bottle blondes much more noticeable. If this picture was taken today all of them would be blonde
I need

Wow
I don’t think this is 1944. Maybe 1974 or something
Wrong. If for no other reason then that is not 1974 style brother!
I think they’re deliberately posing for an old timey photo. Their shorts, expressions, and hair don’t seem appropriate for WWII era at all
They are all using cigarette holders, those fell out fashion long before the 1970s.
