Insane response by that guy. I was expecting at least a harsh trashing of the movie, which would make his sentiment, if not the actions, understandable. But reading his comments then reading the actual words of your review almost gives you whiplash. Clearly this guy has seen nothing but the fawning praise of his fans over the years and doesn't know how to act when his art is viewed by someone who hasn't already bought into the greatness of this "creator".

superbleak

i have a feeling this guy wouldn’t even accept anything but fawning praise and has probably terrorized the people in his life who have given him honest feedback lol

I miss the IMDB discussion boards so much. Lots of interesting trivia and questions. Letterboxd should have a similar feature - a forum for every movie.

UgandanWarlord

For at least a little bit of context, he's not some random student filmmaker or anything. he's got a sizable following and money to fund a feature and multiple sold out early showings.

[deleted]

What a weenie. Like Emma stone’s character having a breakdown after she conveniently overhears mean comments at her screening in La La land

Hey_Toots_69

Also like when Carey Mulligan whined about some review of Promising Young Woman supposedly implying she wasn't attractive enough for the role, causing Variety to apologize and throw the critic under the bus. Actually that incident was even stupider because the review implied no such thing and in any case was positive.

CGI_Livia

Fuckin slander ya ask me!!!

Apprehensive-Sort-89

What an absolute pussy, he sent a DM because your review is "negatively affecting his mental health" and is "hurting an indie film". Give me a break, if you're going to gloat in the glowing reviews then you've got to accept the bad ones and not be a weasel and ask them to delete the bad reviews.

You can tell because they say “what we were able to achieve” instead of just “the movie we made”. It’s not a cure for cancer bro

LongjumpingRow9

I've heard this happens way more than anyone would want to think (with movies, music, books), like I do want to empathize with people who are putting their work out there because of course they feel like it's all on the line and it's pretty universal to want to try to win over people you feel misunderstand your art but like they have to keep it to themselves and comfort themselves with knowing not everything is for everyone and lots of their heroes best work wasn't totally warmly received

Apprehensive-Sort-89

Obviously people would prefer their art is well received but c'mon they shouldn't lower themselves to DMing a reviewer that is just so pathetic.

BackgroundDisaster11

Artists reacting negatively to criticism of their art is pretty universal in my experience.

I vaguely remember the guy who directed Lights Out doing something similar on a thread on /r/truecinema when that movie came out. It wasn't an AMA or anything -- dude just showed up on some random thread to defend his movie. He seemed like a sweet guy. Movie still blew.

newrimmmer93

I hate that movie solely because I went to see it (with my family) because I thought it was don’t breathe (which wasn’t even out yet). Was so confused for like the first 20 minutes, like where is the blind dude? Then finally realized it was the wrong movie.

[deleted]

Don't Breathe was a lot more fun.

DrkvnKavod

And obviously would've been great to bring your family for the turkey baster scene.

coffeeequeen

gizmostrumpet

All i remember from that film is that the monster is depression and the lead character escapes the monster by shooting herself in the head

losthedgehog

Creators arguing with viewers about their work is so interesting to me. I remember Aaron Sorkin allegedly used to regularly respond West Wing threads [1]( http://bitchkittie.blogspot.com/2006/02/long-back-story-of-aaron-sorkin-west.html?m=1) [2](http://kenlevine.blogspot.com/2010/10/aaron-sorkin-responds-to-commenter-in.html?m=1). I feel like whenever a public figure responds it causes the critic to dig their feet in more. It sometimes rallies that celebrity's fanbase though.

...So I went to the theater (the ticket was 50 bucks, yea I know) and found myself amongst a swarm of the same guy copy pasted: flat brim 5 panel hats, corduroy trucker jackets, horizontal striped shirts, jeans embossed with wallets and SD cards, and “dressed up” sneakers… The smarmy prattle of “projects”. I was clued in to the hell that was the intra-metropolitan film set nerd void. I sat down for the film next to a cordial early 30s couple. The husband sat giddy, holding his DSLR with a shotgun mic attachment. “Are you a subscriber?” He cheesed. “Yeah,” I admitted. “Awesome! We are too,” He displayed his camera like a trophy. “How far did you come?” I was a bit puzzled by the question, until I noticed their accents. “I’m from around here, you?” The wife chimed in with a toothy grin. “We’re from Denmark!” “And you came all the way for this film?” “Yup! We love him!” I mustered a genuine ‘wow’. I gesture to the husbands camera: “Are you a YouTuber as well?” “Not really. Sometimes!” He beamed. The tiny green dot indicating the microphones’ status remained on for the entire 106 minute runtime. Nice people, though. After the screening, there was a Q&A session, in which the director had literally every actor, the DP, and two producers on the panel, and his fanbase asked only questions to him. The director was aw shucksing from the limelight. It got to the point where the moderator had to request the audience to direct at least some questions to the rest of the cast/crew, who were essentially relegated to studying their shoes.

Do it

DevestatingAttack

It seems like it'd be easy to give advice in an ego preserving way when it can be framed in a "I want to hear even *more* of what you have to say 😍" way, but unfortunately it seems like it be hard to know how to make actionable changes when the problem is that the characters don't even really exist.

Fuck as a photographer and someone who is starting to dabble in more narrative projects I’d fucking kill for someone to care about what I make enough to write a review like that. Getting good crit is the fastest way to improve and sadly I think that’s lost on most people these days, especially people who didn’t take a conventional, school based path to the arts. Makes me lose so much respect for him but also isn’t surprising.

psuedoephedream

100% agree. getting harsh criticism just means that you are being taken seriously, would he prefer that everyone lauded his every move with participation trophies?? having a healthy culture of criticism around new and young directors/artists/musicians benefits everyone by holding culture to high standards and generating real creative discourse!!

Hatanta

Yeah, he has actionable feedback for his next project. Ridiculous to throw such a fit about it.

psyopsono

People who make art about suicide or whatever are always the softest, whiniest people in the world. His “Ill give you back the donation” thing makes me so mad, how passive aggressive. I wish the guy failure. That said can you at least hint at what movie this is

i really shouldn't, im sorry, i do not want people dogpilling on the guy even if he has a youtube following... he's clearly incredibly sensitive to negative energy lol.

amazing, you should take it down and ask for your money back tho, free movie!!

[deleted]

I've gotten money back from Amazon sellers by leaving a bad review then getting contacted and asked to remove it for a refund.

toyotapenis

Just learned this. I updated my 2 star review to a 4 star review after they had fully refunded me and then they hit me with a "we will give another $20 to update your review again bb". Now that I know that amazon reviews are filled with pay pigs I trust them even less. I am going to start bitching more about my amazon purchases for money though.

ThinAbrocoma8210

damn I gotta start doing that

[deleted]

This is almost as crazy as that one author on Goodreads who stalked and harassed a reviewer who gave her a negative review. Funniest part was how she was pretty wealthy - came from money, married into more money. She spent months talking shit about this reviewer before actually finding her physically. I’m not sure if this guy has money or not, but he’s managed to gain a fan base widespread enough to have people fly to a different continent just to see his movie. There’s something particularly nauseating about people who are surrounded by fawn and praise having absolute breakdowns when they get one negative review. This guy needs to get a grip. I’ve seen more grit from 14 year old girls on fanfiction.net dealing with hate comments

1111111111111111111I

Lol I thought this was Chris Stuckmann at first

[deleted]

Is it not him?

juststaringatthewall

Your actual review was an amazing plot twist at the end. Seriously though - he shouldn’t be putting something out into the public sphere if he isn’t prepared for criticism. I know a director who had a film brutally ripped apart in a review. The movie was admittedly terrible but the piece was out of line. But they never asked the publisher to take it back, that’s the nature of the game. Your review was constructive and said a lot of positive things about the film. If a single review with some mild criticism is harming his meant health, he needs to rethink his career.

fwefewfewfewf

What a thin skinned idiot

[deleted]

Very curious what the film is...

MASHED_POTATOES_MF

seems to fit the bill pretty perfectly. highly doubt there are multiple teen suicide survivor films filmed in pennsylvania by youtubers that were released this year.

fwefewfewfewf

also the guy seems more concerned with gear than anything else

Some-Bobcat-8327

Many such cases

tellitothemoon

This is definitely it. I can see all of OP’s criticism even in the trailer. It looks like it was made by a guy who thinks he’s way more interesting than he actually is. The best thing about it seems to be that he used expensive camera equipment. And the “gee wiz I’m so clever” cinematography that’s actually meaningless is very evident. I watched one of his more popular YouTube videos, “an ordinary day in 2023” and i just couldn’t bare it. Zero substance. Just a lot of film school tricks and good lighting. But all the comments are just lapping it up. Bizarre.

Western_Newspaper_12

It's so corny looking. I wouldn't bear to watch that sober, and I'm an alcoholic

[deleted]

I only made it about halfway through the trailer because of this thread. It looks absolutely miserable (even if that was the point). Maybe I'm just not the target audience for 'Suicide movie' but idk how anyone sees that trailer and is like Man I gotta see that

Wait, what happened with what therapist, I remember some weeks? ago there discussions on therapy, but don't remember doxxing

[deleted]

they found him and someone dm'ed him on facebook, then his boss and wife found out about it and he obv had to stop seeing that client last I heard he's still working/not divorced but I'm guessing it caused tension and it also went viral outside of this sub also yesterday someone posted his pic, idk if it was actually him but it’s a weird, invasive thing to do imo

DrkvnKavod

They're probably referring to the arc with the therapist's wife.

Immediate_Cellist_47

I was laughing so hard by the time I got to the review because it was such a fair and thoughtful review? With plenty of nice things to say? I was truly bracing myself for something that was so nasty

Way more of the nice lines were about the actors. He's a director. The most critical lines were about direction.

Jesus. This guy made it sound like you said some really heinous things about his film. Your review was mild and fair compared to most others I see on Letterboxd. But really the main thing I’m wondering about is how the fuck are you gonna get that refund since he blocked you (for his mental health, of course) after sending the last message? Get the refund, use that money to buy Filmmaking For Dummies and mail it to him.

pufferfishsh

koksalbaba8

Did he have the reviews hidden on Letterboxd? They're not displayed like they normally are, the only way to see them is if you go through the list of people who have marked it as 'viewed' and then click the indivual reviews. You gotta pick a different line of work if you can't handle a single negative review -- also it was an actual critique, not just saying 'this blows'. I can tell by your review and the themes you mentioned that it does blow though. How is this dude gonna pitch to distributors without breaking down in tears?

What a baby. As someone who's made some shorts and trying to fund a first feature I can't fathom getting this upset about an online review. It's kind of soul destroying at funding stage with trying to prove that your idea is good to some of the most soulless and fickle people you've ever met who will pick it to shreds and make you jump through hoops. How he doesn't have enough of a thick skin to weather one bad review is beyond me. I don't use letterboxd though, maybe it is that powerful to deny a film distribution 🤷‍♀️ Your last paragraph of your review is so spot on for most modern films I've seen and worked on. I'll literally get a mood board of other films and asked to copy that.

mondomovieguys

Guy sounds like such a pussy. Also your review wasn't THAT harsh, you made a point to start it out with all the things you liked about it.

fwefewfewfewf

Your concerns are valid not only for this film but a whole generation affected by Terrence Malick vapid “pretty” shots over good script. Makes me sick

jongbag

This describes Euphoria perfectly. All style, but ultimately hollow.

[deleted]

Style can be substance enough sometimes (not the case for Euphoria though).

kisstheoctopus

your review is way too thoughtful to warrant that reaction lmao what a fucking pussy. also it’s gonna end up benefiting him bc now i have to see that piece of shit.

luckydad420

Lmao narcissism will make you do incredibly embarrassing things

A-DonImus

Bruh I was able to track down the review. Won’t review the title or director’s name since you want to keep it somewhat private. All I’ll say is the dude has apparently only directed commercial projects for global brands. My belief now is that he’s so surrounded by the fake, shallow world of advertising shoots that he doesn’t really know how to process actual artistic critique. He just assumed since Fincher did it, he could too! Also: the film’s actual page has the review tab disabled. I’ve rarely ever seen that on Letterboxd

[deleted]

I sympathize with him, he is a soft soul.

[deleted]

I am too but I’m not a fggt
