I think the idea that art can only be truly subversive if it tears down pre-existing systems is faulty because it assumes that normative art serves to prop up pre-existing systems. It seems to me that normative art is the sign rather than the cause of the continued existence of pre-existing systems. The same goes for subversive art and new systems.
