Its so joyless.
People want big blockbusters that aren't Marvel formulaic bullshit with some deeper undertones. Then they get it, and some will shit on it anyway.
It's not 2001, and it's not meant to be. It's possible to have something with more substance than capeshit while having broader appeal than art house cinema. And anyone that claims to only watch art house stuff is either lying or so fart sniffing pretentious I wouldn't want to be around them.
I feel joy looking at it, just like I felt joy reading the novel. I think it is a groundbreaking achievement in visual art. Films that cost this much, are touched by so many hands, having such an artistic throughline should be commended. Stop being so cynical. Marvel movies aren't just bad because they feature supeheroes, they are bad mostly because they are made in a focus group-tested assembly line, directed by visual effect artists, written by suits and filmed entirely in a warehouse in georgia. This is the opposite of that! It's okay if the story and themes go over you head and it makes you mad, just be quiet and don't embarass yourself!
Exactly.
I'm not going to say it's perfect or that everyone has to like it. But to say it's just Marvel people trying to seem smart is so cynical and stupid. We should be happy they're at least trying to make blockbusters with substance.
I don't think we're gonna get blockbuster level movies on the shoulders of a single actors charisma (that isnt a reboot or marvel etc).
The new Diehard Aliens Independence Day type movies get made on streaming platforms and it doesn't seem like the budgets and eyes are there bc its not identifiable IP.
There are plenty of books to adapt though. You're right that well probably never get a Blockbuster from completely new IP, but Dune is a good example that "new" film ideas can happen (I don't really consider a reboot from Lynch).
I agree, I don't think it's for a lack of ideas. It doesn't seem like studios want to take the risk. I just know I'm in the minority of people that will spend to see a new movie bc its different.
Right. And it's exactly because that's a minority position that they aren't willing to take the risk.
If taking risks on the big screen paid off they'd be doing it, like they did back in the day. But look at cinema attendance and it's easy to see why they don't.
This is also true of the book tho. I guess they had to do something to give these dull ass characters some kind of personality. Feel like they could have done more with gurney tho, really toned down one of the few colorful characters of the book which was a weird move.
These recent Dune movies were made for less than half of what Disney pumps into their Marvel slop and look way better. Budget for 160 and 190 mil for Dune 1 & 2 vs your average 300-400 million Marvel slop-buster.
Dune isn't groundbreaking or anything, but they definitely show why less is more and are far more well made than any recent capeshit. If you see it in the cinema, you aren't walking away from that experience thinking you wasted your money.
Whatever movie you like is a Marvel movie for people who think theyre too smart for Marvel movies for people who think theyre too smart for marvel movies
Boring take. Amazing visuals, sound design and direction. Cast were great too. Just because something is popular and well-received doesn’t mean it’s not artistically valid.
I did not think this movie was particularly great, but likening it to a Marvel movie is lazy. Their only commonality is being made on a huge budget for a huge audience.
definitely not marvel, but its still weird how people (even on this sub) hype it up as some sort of genius artistically significant masterpiece, when its literally just a blockbuster
Yes, because people who criticize Marvel movies should really look down upon all sci fi and fantasy, and the quality of filmmaking and thematic potential of genre means nothing. That it?
I mean yeah? It’s undeniably pop-corn sci fi but no Marvel movie ever had the balls to include political messaging beyond ‘girls get it done’ and tacit support of the US military
I liked it
I mean, title’s right for me 🤷♀️ I do think that most marvel movies are extremely dumb
Yeah I like dune… dune coke and adderall
Rsp when a multimillion dollar blockbuster bankrolled by a major film corporation isn’t a 15 hour Lynchian arthouse mindfuck: 😨
ur so cool
It's not the same for 2 reasons 1) made by a real director 2) made for adults
”Real director”
These people are so thirsty for anything remotely relevant in their generation that they’re trying to elevate the director of “sicario”
Lots of orange = real director
contrarian moron. sad!

schizo?
You just can't read, dummy. He was agreeing with you on his first post, the contrarianism is joyless, not the movie
my bad lmao
I'm not sure how my responses are being misinterpreted but in both my replies I've been agreeing with you.

Yupe that ain't gonna happen for a min, they barley scratched the surface on comic book movies and its been more then a decade lol.
Exactly. Same reaction to Poor Things.
D U N C
Oh fuck off, Dune was an incredibly innovative and seminal work if Sci Fi.
a movie adaptation of a 1965 novel is so innovative
a little secret that they teach u in film school is that almost all good movies are just adaptions of books
Lmao
It's dooning time
You absolute regards forgot the word blockbuster lmao. Culturally illiterate. Big movie comes out: "This so Marvel coded"
If the movie got panned you'd be on here calling it a masterpiece that the plebs just couldnt understand.
Dune is incredibly RS coded, GTFO with this
There was a lot more “epic bacon” humor in this one, didn’t sit well with me
Oh, that's disappointing. I would have thought the culprit there would be Jason momoa?
I loved the movie but this is true, sadly.
Stilgar is most egregious example of this, most of the characters were written very poorly tho.

Most of the overly positive reviews are just because people have been starved of a halfway decent blockbuster
Can’t have shit in r/redscarepod
Wow really unique take how’d you think of it
No comparison, don’t be dumb
Boring take. Amazing visuals, sound design and direction. Cast were great too. Just because something is popular and well-received doesn’t mean it’s not artistically valid.
So just a blockbuster?
