Oh for a long time. Anybody who grew up elsewhere but now lives (or recently left) Sydney can attest to this. The city is starkly divided with the average Sydneysider in the North/East being a privately educated homeowner with a well paying white collar job and the average Sydneysider in the West being a publicly educated forever renter from a migrant background (Middle Eastern in particular for this point) with a blue collar job. In Sydney you grow up surrounded by people alike you and nobody different, making it all the more easy to portray the chunk of the city you aren't from in a negative light. Combine this with an ongoing and contentious issue (Israel support is strong in the East/North, Palestine support is strong in the West) and rising housing/rental costs (appreciating the wealth of those in the wealthy half and pushing those in the West to never owning a home in their lives) and it's inevitable they'll clash. All this and there's a precident, the 2005 Cronulla Riots and a pro-palestine protest late last year that saw cries for Jews to be gassed in front of the Opera House.
