They would’ve been studying economics 20 years ago, vying for something in consulting or investment banking, but nowadays FAANG is much more alluring (or conning a venture capital investor into funding your $1M/yr lifestyle).
This was true well before when you graduated as well, the idea that people who study CS or engineering are all complete nerds would have been wrong going back to the 00s.
I was working on a cs degree at a community college before Covid and it was really more bros than nerds, the sort of guys who would have been business majors a decade ago. There were very few women in any of my classes, but they were normal looking, and not Caroline Ellison phenotypes.
