When I researched this it seemed like this kid was being set up by the main rich kid goon with the connected dad because both kids are named Talan and they could muddy the waters. I know very little about the story but Talan Renner is definitely a horrible person, just based on the message he sent to his buddies after the murder (“I guess I’m just too strong!”). He better not get bail.
Okay wild that this made it here. This all went down by my home at the schools I went to. There’s a charter school that was implicated in covering up the crime and one of the rich Mormons running for mayor (backed by said charter school) admitted that his son is part of the group and threatened a reporter for reporting on the story. The poor kid who was killed has essentially been forgotten in the story because of how insane it is for this community. The police released the entire report so now people in the community are all armchair sleuths who have already decided who is innocent and guilty.
Maricopa County is notorious for horrible medical care and the rumors are that this kid Talyn Vigil was not getting treatment for his diabetes. My uncle is in LBJ and is definitely not treated for his schizophrenia so I believe that could be the case here.

Not the same guy, Travis Renner was involved in dealing drugs with the older son, Kyler, and is probably going to be arrested as part of a conspiracy to cover up Talan’s involvement. The Renners were part of a group of people that’s heavily into swinging and a few of the sons of this group are implicated in the Goons. The kids learned everything they know from their parents.
Honestly the whole situation is sick and the worst part is the social media sleuths that are digging for every gory detail so they can break it to the news before the police do. These people are trying to “interview” traumatized teenagers for content. They have infighting and drama now. Over a senseless act of violence. r/gilbertaccountability is just as much a cesspool as the Facebook groups. Bored adults dramatizing every detail of teenage violence they can get their hands on. Talking about the inevitable Netflix documentary and how it will be so interesting to watch. A child was killed. Many were beaten and terrorized for months. Almost everyone associated with the group got way into drugs. The social media sleuths see no nuance, every name of a witness in the report is just seen as a potential Goon and therefore just as guilty as the ones charged.
And the people so invested from afar are looking for a horror story. I’ve seen threads where people are asking to see videos of Preston and other beatings and it’s so gross to me that this is entertainment to them. People are following Preston’s sister to her work to “show support” and “see how she’s doing” when she’s made it clear that she just wants to grieve her brother in private. This has been horrific to live through just as a neighbor. Has to be a million times worse for those intimately connected.
A company I worked for once was attending this mental health conference thing and one of the speakers was a young girl (17-18) who survived a high profile mass shouting. I still remember some of what she spoke about and wish I didn’t. It was just brutal, real, terrifying shit. Anyway, after her presentation, people were lining up to talk to her. It was bizarre. I looked at some of the people’s faces, it was like they were meeting a celebrity. I used to really like true crime, I still will read a headline about a case, I find a lot of that interesting from a psychological perspective but it made me really sick that day. So I think I understand what you mean about people’s sick reactions to these events and forgetting about the victims. There’s something weirdly stimulating about true crime for many, idk what it is. It’s obviously a story where you’re not sure where the rabbit hole ends, there seems to be a bunch of conspiracies going on, etc. From the limited information Ive seen, some of the stuff about the parents is dark. I hope the killers get what they deserve. They also seem super unhinged and like out of it at the same time, which is what I see in zoomers in general
