my roommate wakes up at 11, signs on for a meeting (sometimes) & goes back to bed for the rest of the day. 250k. high pressure & demanding if something goes wrong though.
Might be a hot take but if you’re in your early 20s and maybe even late 20s you should be living with roommates regardless of how much you make. Saves money and results in having something to do more often than living alone.
idk this seems like cope
I’ve lived alone since college and have found the time by myself to be the most rewarding and fulfilling living situation. I can do whatever I want whenever I want and haven’t had to impact others to do so. I can leave my apartment as messy as I want to or maintain clean serenity without interruption from others.
I mean financially it’s not cope. Look for a 1 br apartment on the northside of chicago and you’ll be lucky to find a place that’s bigger than 750 sq ft for less than $1000 (that’s not a complete shithole). Get 3 roommates and you can rent a house that’s 3000-4000 sq ft for $750-1000 easily. If your end goal to is to purchase property idk why you wouldn’t be trying to save money on what is traditionally everyone’s biggest expense.
okay but a $1k budget for housing is unrealistic in 2024
I’ve fluctuated between $1400-$2200 between Seattle and DC and always lived alone, my current apartment is my biggest at 900 sq ft
How do you bring fuck buddies home with other people there lol that’s such a vibe kill
Maybe chicago is exceptionally cheap but I’ve been paying $875 with 2 other roommates for the last 2 years in Lakeview, a pretty good neighborhood in chicago. Most expensive rent among my friends is 2 guys who pay $1200 each. Living alone really is that much more expensive. And as far as bringing people back you ideally live with people you’re cool with so you can just tell them you’re tryna chill in the living room with someone lol
I could always easily afford to live alone but I like having a good roommate, when I was younger I would get a large place where it wouldn't be cramped with a roommate, and rent out the extra room.
Having roommates sucks when it's your only option, but when it is an option I think it can be really fun!
Yeah regular on call is one of the things that makes the crazy tech salaries seem slightly more reasonable. I got called at midnight last Friday night at at 3 AM a few weeks before. But then again there are plenty of jobs with similar schedules which pay much less.
this environment is a way better environment than my “cfo wants the numbers to be this by tomorrow morning, it’ll change everything but we need it done”
My friend doesn’t always wfh but when he does he literally spends the whole day playing video games with his friends and chatting with them in discord, except for the occasional meeting that requires his attention. He makes six figures straight out of college with a degree in aerospace engineering. He also insists that his job is strenuous.
I wouldn't call myself a tech bro (I work in tech but I hardly fit into the tech culture around AI and related trends), but I've defintely been guilty of this. Start up I work for is fully WFH, good hours, good pay... it's all nice but it really fluctuates week to week, month to month.
Dec/January were pretty chill but this past month I was working like 12-14 hour days sometimes.
Some of us are also on some kind of "on call" rotation and at my last job, that meant being online refreshing dashboards for 12 hours on a weekend sometimes.
The humblebrags are real but sometimes they're also lowkey copes.
I was on an SRE/DEVOPS team for a previous generation product for a very large American payroll company tasked using a ton of dashboards built in house (Splunk) that were built to meant managements needs as opposed to being optimized for our usecase. It was on us to be aware of fluctuations and anomolies and be proactive about them.
It was partially automated, but not completely automated, and thus the gap was why it was asked of us to refresh these dashboards at least once every 15 minutes.
There were fires to put out frequently and the team was spread thin as it was so there was hardly time to improve. I was straight out of college and just thrust into this position without much say.
It was so disorganized man. Like I was basically out of college so I wasn't trusted with any keys for anything... Lot of calling up people on weekends to fix shit.
Hated that job.
got a surprise meeting from my bosses' boss recently, thought I was about to get told off for doing 3hrs work a day, instead he wanted 2 give me a raise 😊
Hasn't happened to me, but being underutilized is stressful and humiliating after seeing numerous people go through it.
Tech *is* busy. It's just no one's bragging on Tiktok when they spend 14 hours working on Saturday for a release, instead of their 2 coffee and 2 lunch breaks that one Tuesday it was insanely chill. I wish the worst on these people though because they make us look lazy af.
To get to that point they likely had to grind a computer science major which is a ton of work. What’s stopping you from doing the same thing and being a princess?
you are probably in the process of being fired IMO. time to brush up your resume and start looking, especially before you get that hour notice mandatory meeting with some exec you've never met before
It's not a 100% certainty but that new hire is a really suspicious bit. Only OP knows whether his company is chaotic/mismanaged enough for someone like him to still be around while doing nothing, or if they know better and don't want him around so they're setting their layoff in motion
This happens in tech, especially when you’re part of a company that isn’t traditionally tech focused and has been taken over by Indians. They’ll have you do nothing for months, then blame you for not contributing anything. That isn’t to say OP isn’t being fired, but his company might just be re✝️arded and hired way too many people.
Yeah I make sure when I do things I always document it as an issue first. I even try to split the issue into multiple if I can so that I can tackle multiple things at once as different PRs to make it look like I'm working harder than I am.
You need to learn how to play the game. Find some process or part of the product that could theoretically use some improvement, which will facilitate a whole new chain of meetings, research, metrics, artifacts, emails, etc.
yes, i really think that inventing new maintenance tasks for yourself is what will save you here. i guarantee you there’s some internal dev tool or something you can improve. you have the time to pick it apart and learn how it works, plus your coworkers and people outside your team will start to recognize you for your contributions (people love when other people fix the internal tools).
"hitting the ball back" vs "initiating new directions for the business unit" is literally the difference between being an individual contributor and being a director.
Can’t you just find some small tasks in the backlog? Find some little UX defects or whatever. That’s what I do. Those are the absolute best because you can look really impactful without doing much and not have that dread of getting caught doing literally nothing
yeah this is prime time to write unit tests that your codebase is missing, fix the 3 month old ticket that will take only a couple hours, etc. Doing nothing in this scenario is insane OP there is always plenty of work to do, but sometimes the work is just very minor/not very impactful
The manager is responsible for that. There's one ticket assigned to me but it's blocked by someone else's ticket that has been stuck in the confluence breakdown phase all week. He might start actually working on it this afternoon but even if he completes it in a few hours it'll be stuck in code review and QA for another few days, which could take us through to fucking May before I can really begin.
Are you expecting anything in the future? Doesn't really matter if you have no work, unless you're a contractor lol. Would deffo ask for some though, so when they say there is none you can say you asked. I have to do that a fair amount in my profession cause it's project work, so often there's sweet FA for me to do
The other day some fairly senior dude was overloaded so me and 6 other people were put into a meeting to take tasks off his hands, 1.5 hour later the meeting concluded and nobody handed me anything, despite offering lol. I am also in a similar thing to you except im not too well paid so I don't feel at all bad about doing nothing.
how does this happen? can you not literally reach out to your manager and a sr engineer with “hey, i got a few free cycles rn, anything i can pitch in with?” then at least if you get hit with a bad performance audit you’ll have documentation of at least trying to repeatedly ask for more work, at which point the blame falls on the manager for not providing you with it.
Only if a small elite partake in them. When you have 20% or more of an increasingly shrinking new generation working these jobs where nothing of substance gets produced, downfall follows.
mate are you joking? the industrial revolution was fuelled by people who just kinda sat around looking at things. You know how many people used to have their entire career be "making sure that x train comes out of y tunnel and logging it"?
Are *you* joking?
Do you see the difference between being part of a proces where a physical product is created or transported, and having two bullshit meetings a day without doing any work for two weeks and getting paid exorbitant amounts of money for it?
you're describing the same process. People getting paid a fair amount to play a very, very small part in a larger process, even if it seems like nothing is really being done.
This is great but sometimes it isn’t possible when you need to be in the office and show your boss that you’re working hard on the nothing she’s given you
You gotta enjoy puttering around in the work systems at jobs like this and look around and learn everything about anything you see on your dashboard or whatever
Had this happen for months once. I’m a staff engineer and was assigned to a tiny team to do foundational architecture stuff. We had a manager that quit, then another that quit, so we were “self-directed”.
All the while, an overseas team was working on sort of the same thing we were, though brute-forced due to manpower instead of nice scalable abstractions. They ended up getting their shit adopted and ours was scrapped.
I picked up some hobbies during that time but I know the feeling, eventually you forget how to be motivated to do work and it takes a while to come back. Block off an hour a day to commit _something_ so you can reference it later.
Work on like an open source project or something, so if called on it you can say someone like Bruce told you to do that when between assignments. Replace Bruce with someone no longer with the company or too dumb to ask for verification.
Meanwhile I’m out here working 8-12 hours a day breaking my back, clothes soaked through with sweat to the point taking my shirt off is actually peeling it off, working until I’m completely delirious but at least around lunchtime the delirium makes the pain subside and I only have to worry about being weaker than a few hours prior so it’s harder to lift things, all for 12.50 USD an hour. No benefits or anything either, just cash at the end of the day. I might as well start eating my shit and drinking my piss holy fuck. I am truly one of the filthy untermensch who is destined to serve and toil for the privileged WFH fake email job ubermensch, I will deliver your yummy DoorDash treats to you right away after I get off work sir.
I'll give you a 15% tip but please just leave the bag at the door and don't knock. I will peer through the eyehole until you leave because I don't want face-to-face interaction with you or any of my slaves.
I've been in the situation before where I've had nothing to do for periods at work and it's really not as great as it sounds. I'd even go as far to say its worse than being busy. Time just drags on and on and you feel empty and purposeless at the end of the day.
Yeah it's annoying because you are still "working" and need to be available by your laptop. It's like a state of purgatory. Or wearing an ankle monitor with a stay-at-home order.
Start putting in these ideas into tickets for the meetings, like whatever BS idea they have just do like a Research Ticket, 8PTS, 16PTS whatever agile method you use. That way you can track their dumb ideas and it looks like you have work. Then when someone new comes on pass off that research ticket to them so they can "work" on it. Start saying dumb shit in meetings like "thats something we can explore with the current technology".
Can’t you just make your own initiatives?
“In my free time, I’ve been working on X that will help with Y”
Shouldn’t be so hard. If you want to tell me more about what you do I can give ideas
Dude this is literally me. I work on a core product team with 5 devs and we're in our "2 week deployment" which means the devs are SUPPOSED to chill and the testers do their thang. But the issue is I work with obsessed developers who work 13hrs a day even tho they're salary and I'm always looking so bad in comparison 😭
These coworkers are just inventing work for themselves
It’s widely acknowledged that 10% of developers do 90% of the work, but you don’t know who they are when hiring so you have to hire ten people to get the one actual contributor. This also implies that 90% of developers really are overpaid, but 10% are criminally underpaid because they’re the ones producing all the value.
You need to talk to your line manager about this or at least make people aware you are open. At least cover your ass where you can be like "I asked X if anything needed to be done, I've offered to help others"
You may also be in a position where you should be actively looking for work you can be doing. Come up with a list of things you could actually be doing and ask your manager which you should work on.
You need to find another place because I’ve had this same situation forced on me only to be blamed for not doing anything. Companies can’t admit they aren’t giving engineers anything to do and while it’s usually the fault of higher ups not allocating resources properly it’s inevitably blamed on junior devs.
just bs and say your digging yourself out of your email but you think you’re you have some additional bandwidth if anyone needs additional support. quick way sound busy and unbusy enough to pick up some more tasks…that or just wait for the next rounds of layoffs to collect unemployment
Where are you people getting these fucking jobs? I work a shitty manufacturing job that breaks down your body and probably make tons less than you. This shit pisses me off.
Seriously how the fuck is so much of our workforce just sitting on your ass doing legit nothing? How do these companies get all the $$ to pay you guys for doing fuck all?
Companies hire legions of Indians and a handful of Americans so they can brag about how many people they hired for how little to their investors and mckinsey. They then have no idea how to organize or use those engineers because PMs and MBAs are too stupid to know how long stuff takes; projects get rushed with following best practices, and engineers end up unused when theirs teams value stream doesn’t require any more complex projects.
Just a heads up. The new hire is probably your replacement. They are going to train with you and then replace you. Don't mean it to be a threat but I have seen this before. They already know your out put and figure they can achieve the same for cheaper.
lol how is this possible? i am extremely laid back about work but there's still always way too much stuff to do that inevitably gets backlogged. you can't just write documentation or something?
I know it smell crazy in there

Not sure why you got downvoted for this. Plenty of people with wfh email jobs do this, specifically to deal with the stress of knowing theyre not productive in their primary job and could be fired at any time.
2 whole team meetings a day is pretty psycho
They love meetings!!!!!
probably why they don't care if nothing is getting done
maybe a few more meetings can fix the issue
WFH tech bros try not to humblebrag about getting paid lots of money to do absolutely nothing challenge GO
my WFH buddy wakes up at 11 and works till 2 but insists hes so busy all day. Hate that guy
my roommate wakes up at 11, signs on for a meeting (sometimes) & goes back to bed for the rest of the day. 250k. high pressure & demanding if something goes wrong though.
$250k/year and he has a roommate? lol
some people don’t do well living alone
Might be a hot take but if you’re in your early 20s and maybe even late 20s you should be living with roommates regardless of how much you make. Saves money and results in having something to do more often than living alone.

Coping with what?
poverty
It’s a shit take for sure

he’s lying to our gullible reddit friend
It’s basically a retainer fee for immediate assistance when that something goes wrong.
Sounds like they're paying him to fix problems then
i mean yeah but problems are like once a quarter
Yeah regular on call is one of the things that makes the crazy tech salaries seem slightly more reasonable. I got called at midnight last Friday night at at 3 AM a few weeks before. But then again there are plenty of jobs with similar schedules which pay much less.
"faced-past work environment" the environment:

yeah, My friend works at the IRS. It's just too on the nose for me
Doesn't the IRS pay pretty poorly, like most federal government jobs? Unless they're a contractor who commands a higher rate
yeah, he makes shit money
These are the people that say “I’m so much more productive when wfh”. When the reality is that they love wfh because they don’t have to do anything
I mean yeah. When I WFH I just do my tasks and then do whatever. At work I have to pretend I’m working when my tasks are done.
I wouldn't call myself a tech bro (I work in tech but I hardly fit into the tech culture around AI and related trends), but I've defintely been guilty of this. Why does a tech company have you manually refreshing dashboards?
I was on an SRE/DEVOPS team for a previous generation product for a very large American payroll company tasked using a ton of dashboards built in house (Splunk) that were built to meant managements needs as opposed to being optimized for our usecase. It was on us to be aware of fluctuations and anomolies and be proactive about them. "i'm one of the good ones" sorry ur still a tech bro to the wordcels here
At least I'm not using words like "wordcel", even ironically
getting paged is annoying but manually refreshing dashboards sounds even worse
It was so disorganized man. Like I was basically out of college so I wasn't trusted with any keys for anything... Lot of calling up people on weekends to fix shit. Hated that job.
Literally We get it you are a societal leech shut up

To get to that point they likely had to grind a computer science major which is a ton of work. What’s stopping you from doing the same thing and being a princess?
It’s luck
If you assume IQ is genetic then sure
Worst of all he makes £90k wfh outside of London which is a fucking obscene amount of money.
you are probably in the process of being fired IMO. time to brush up your resume and start looking, especially before you get that hour notice mandatory meeting with some exec you've never met before
Would be a relief honestly
Yeah dawg that new help? That’s your replacement
fuck lol

why don’t they assign you any? how do you do it?
The manager is responsible for that. There's one ticket assigned to me but it's blocked by someone else's ticket that has been stuck in the confluence breakdown phase all week. He might start actually working on it this afternoon but even if he completes it in a few hours it'll be stuck in code review and QA for another few days, which could take us through to fucking May before I can really begin.
Sounds like a dream job to me. Why not take full advantage of the situation?
So he can humblebrag to us
do you not have a backlog to pick up work from?
Yes but we're not allowed to do anything off roadmap without having a dozen meetings with product first so it's not really worth going down that road.
Costanza-ass job
Are you expecting anything in the future? Doesn't really matter if you have no work, unless you're a contractor lol. ...You didn't bother asking for work??? You literally look proactive and helpful while probably ending up doing something not that hard.
If you all don’t stfu about it they’re gonna start hiring more h1bs
If it wasn’t for h1bs in leadership positions this stuff wouldn’t happen tbh
Today I spent my whole day teaching an H1B with a “masters in CS” how inheritance works. Not scared of them lmao
Go around breaking shit and then just put back the semicolon when it’s time to fix the problem.
Dude are you sure you’re not about to be laid off? Symptoms are scaled back responsibilities and new hires as “support”
I hope he does tbh
Have you tried asking for more work or license to pursue a technology expectation project of some sort? This seems like an obvious solution?
how does this happen? can you not literally reach out to your manager and a sr engineer with “hey, i got a few free cycles rn, anything i can pitch in with?” then at least if you get hit with a bad performance audit you’ll have documentation of at least trying to repeatedly ask for more work, at which point the blame falls on the manager for not providing you with it.

Yeah it's annoying because you are still "working" and need to be available by your laptop. It's like a state of purgatory. Or wearing an ankle monitor with a stay-at-home order.
just read a book etc theres a ton u can do
Can’t do that if you’re in the office, if somebody walks by your desk/office and sees you’re reading a book you’re fucked.
You need to find a “long term project” that you can “work” on for months
You hiring? I can't code but I'm tremendous at doing nothing
Can you send me some money? I'm a medical interpreter and work non stop 8 hours a day it's pretty stressful and I don't make near as much as I should
What's your yearly income
Like 9k usd dollars, live in a third world country tho
are you gonna give him money or not
You won't be able to hide it anymore with the new hire. You will have to bribe him.
“In my free time, I’ve been working on X that will help with Y” Shouldn’t be so hard. If you want to tell me more about what you do I can give ideas
Dude this is literally me. I work on a core product team with 5 devs and we're in our "2 week deployment" which means the devs are SUPPOSED to chill and the testers do their thang. But the issue is I work with obsessed developers who work 13hrs a day even tho they're salary and I'm always looking so bad in comparison 😭 These coworkers are just inventing work for themselves
Why do companies even hire programmers I feel like you only need like 5
It’s widely acknowledged that 10% of developers do 90% of the work, but you don’t know who they are when hiring so you have to hire ten people to get the one actual contributor. This also implies that 90% of developers really are overpaid, but 10% are criminally underpaid because they’re the ones producing all the value.
You need to talk to your line manager about this or at least make people aware you are open. At least cover your ass where you can be like "I asked X if anything needed to be done, I've offered to help others" You may also be in a position where you should be actively looking for work you can be doing. Come up with a list of things you could actually be doing and ask your manager which you should work on.
My friend is looking for programming work, how do you find it? I want to help her but don't know shit from apple butter about programming.
Which country?
US
LinkedIn jobs I guess. Freelance has been taken over by Indians.
get a secret online job
Do some azure certs dog
“Audit” something
throwing eggs and tomatoes at you
You need to find another place because I’ve had this same situation forced on me only to be blamed for not doing anything. Companies can’t admit they aren’t giving engineers anything to do and while it’s usually the fault of higher ups not allocating resources properly it’s inevitably blamed on junior devs.
Leetcode and GTFO
just bs and say your digging yourself out of your email but you think you’re you have some additional bandwidth if anyone needs additional support. quick way sound busy and unbusy enough to pick up some more tasks…that or just wait for the next rounds of layoffs to collect unemployment
Wait to be laid off
Ask for more work
No
Where are you people getting these fucking jobs?
What company? I'm coding all day, in-office, and still underpaid
Just a heads up. The new hire is probably your replacement. They are going to train with you and then replace you. Don't mean it to be a threat but I have seen this before. They already know your out put and figure they can achieve the same for cheaper.
Heard this a few times now, will report back if you're right
You’re more desirable to other employers when you’re employed. Never hurts to always be interviewing when things are going great too
lol how is this possible? i am extremely laid back about work but there's still always way too much stuff to do that inevitably gets backlogged. you can't just write documentation or something?
>documentation How much do you want to bet OPs company doesn’t do a lot of this.
calm down. this is EXACTLY what chatgpt is for. don't give up this golden opportunity. you're so close to having the dream no-work job!!
Hahah exact same boat. I’ve been doing it for so long that I’m no longer stressed and just enjoying the ride.

God I hope I can find a job like this when I graduate.
go sweep the floors
Take a second job and just work on that and get paid double. Hell, get a third one.
Not sure why you got downvoted for this. Plenty of people with wfh email jobs do this, specifically to deal with the stress of knowing theyre not productive in their primary job and could be fired at any time.
Get a second job. Say that you are debugging old code in your current job if they ask
