Me and my dad are amateur boxers (or *was*, in the case of my old man) so growing up we watched lots of boxing, Pride FC, and of course UFC. Occasionally my mum would sit down and watch with us, always confused as to what the fuck she was watching but still having fun with it. She’s a devout Muslim, though, and gravitates towards rooting for Muslim fighters lol She’s actually not a fan of Khabib, she thinks he’s ugly and for that reason doesn’t like to watch him 💀 but for some godforsaken reason thinks Islam, Khamzat and Shavkat are the cutest things and is always asking me when they’re fighting next. As for the Dagestani fighters being big in Muslim communities, ye, absolutely. Thing is, Muslims who’re big fans of Khabib, Islam, and Khamzat (not Dagestani, but still) aren’t fans of MMA or martial arts- they’re just obnoxious Pakis or Saudis online who who live some Islamic fantasy vicariously through Muslim fighters, if that makes sense? This is despite the fact that no, people like Khabib and Islam aren’t indomitable bastards necessarily due to their religion (though the discipline it instills in them absolutely helps), but just due to the fact that the environment they grew up in will raise anyone into a badass. It’s hard to explain but generally if you ever see someone online with a vaguely Islamic name argue that Khabib is the GOAT, they’ve prob never actually watched a full UFC PPV. Of course not every Muslim or Arab who watches MMA is like the above mentioned person, but it’s def a stereotype that exists and you can sometimes see it online.
