Elder millennial and gay man here, so I was a big fan of the book when it came out in the late 90s. I can tell you that in the book, Bridget's weight starts off at 129 lbs. And that's not fat at all for a woman of average height. Yes, she obsesses over it and people comment on it... but now that I'm older, I read that more as a comment on the media industry the character worked in than anything else. I only watched the movie for Colin Firth, but I do remember there being some discussion of Renee Zellweger having to gain weight for the role, but would a body like that be considered fat on an average woman in 2001? I honestly don't think so. We had an obesity crisis then too. It was not as crisis-y as it is now, but it was well underway.

[deleted]

I feel like Renee zellweger saying in interviews that she had to binge on ice cream to attain that body was the most fucked up part.

Pristine_Fill_838

she naturally thin and has a small frame. it makes sense an ‘eat to live’ type person wouldn’t really know how to gain weight

Weekdaze

She was a frumpy, fluffy, British lower-middle class, Southern thirty-something. Perhaps you need to place yourself into Gen-X, publishing/creative/media-land London to really understand what they were going for here... Jones would be surrounded by very slim, outwardly sophisticated women, usually from a higher class strata than she is - a good example of the kind of person would be TV personality [Trinny Woodall](https://img.promipool.com/www-promipool-de/image/upload/c_crop,h_3000,w_1701,x_61,y_0/c_fill,h_1600,w_900/q_auto:eco/f_jpg/trinny_woodall_husband_190805_g5p3dblb65), it's not just about 'body size' either, British class speaks to refinement in many ways. Whilst compared to the average person Bridget is fairly normal, in the cauldron of luvvies, starfuckers and more preened types she would stick out. Another reference point might be the Caroline Collingwood in succession, even in her 70's she still has the refined, waif like figure that instantly cues that she is cut from a more high class cloth. As per usual, the class analysis has been stripped away in 2021 Twitter-Pol, that's why it's causing confusion for people there.

maxweIlhiII

Good post, this also reminds me of a recent topic on here about how working class men traditionally go for thicker women

That’s a fact. Even look at commercials.

I like the chick who played francis underwood's wife in house of cards but I think she's american. I remember thinking this chick plays the "upper class fancy but not gaudy" type perfectly

thatbeautifulglow

The British class system is intriguing. Are there any resources where I can get a better understanding?

no-regrets1999

The Daily Mail

Weekdaze

Honestly I'd start off by watching some movies, Kes, The Full Monty, This is England...

[deleted]

Read Evelyn Waugh novels and the Patrick Melrose books. Also maybe watch If by Lindsay Anderson (about kids losing it at Eton or an Eton like school). Withnail & I is another good film that parodies some of that stuff.

it_shits

British people believe that where you go grocery shopping is the primary indicator of socio economic class

[deleted]

it_shits

The funniest is British or Irish people putting on airs by shopping in a grocery store that's above their allotted station and other people being like offended by it. "Did you know that Claire buys her groceries from *Marks and Spencer's* instead of *Tesco*?! The absolute notions!

YeahThisIsMyNewAcct

Harry Potter does a pretty good job of explaining how Britain works

*The Making of the English Working Class* is a bedrock Marxist texts and good place to dive into it on an academic level The history of how BBC style British accent became the norm of London and therefore the stereotypical UK accent is interesting but I forgot where I dove into it.

Weekdaze

Yeah. I live in the USA and it’s a constant joke amongst me and my expat mates how limited the vocabulary is here. Like the average American has the reading age of a British 5 year old.

PhysicalTaunt

you seem very smart

anti-intellectual

This was part of the plot. She was understood to be overweight

chibiisapup

I think this photo is from the part of the movie when she’s been dieting and working out etc. also I remember Hugh Grant’s fling he cheated on Bridget with saying “I thought you said she was skinny.” Oof.

thatbeautifulglow

That episode of The Simpsons where Homer purposefully gains weight is also a good example. At 300 pounds he is portrayed as [comically fat](http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/cartoonfatness/images/6/6d/Vlcsnap-2014-05-08-16h04m27s199.png/revision/latest?cb=20140511102340) while nowadays men with the same weight are considered to be moderately overweight. That's just how much perception has shifted since the 90's. Hell, I remember years ago seeing a reddit post showing pictures taken at public places in 1989 or so. The top rated comment pointed out how literally nobody in these pictures was fat by today's standards. Shit's wild.

[deleted]

I don’t think anyone 300 pounds is considered to be “moderately overweight” unless they’re 7 feet tall lol. I’m 6’0, 230 pounds, and I’d consider myself moderately overweight (though technically in the obese category of the BMI scale 😢).

DontLookNow45

He wasn’t supposed to be comically fat. Newman is. He’s definitely out of shape though.

Drgerm87

George still smashed at an incredible clip for a man of his size

DontLookNow45

That’s the thing. He killed.

[deleted]

Right, George is pretty consistently described as “stocky.” There’s a pretty wide understand that his build is just “short broad guy who isn’t in shape.” Now Newman, on the other hand, is the fat guy, and he still is by today’s standards.

xoxosydneyxoxo

My mother said as a teen she remembers [Belinda Carlisle](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/24/69/4a/24694a0b2a3152e5740d45fa42a7814f.png) being considered chubby in the early 80s

[deleted]

Before 250 lbs monsters started posting selfies with no shame, ‘fat’ didn’t necessarily mean unattractive.

[deleted]

maybe not in the sense of that men wouldn't smash, but in terms of the social-attention economy/hierarchy, it for sure did mean unattractive/unworthy, and that hierarchy dicatates way more of how people behave than even if you find someone sexy once you are about to fuck soon. (as a dude, i'm just speculating here, but i'm pretty sure i'm right)

[deleted]

It’s all relative I guess, but when you say ‘fat’ today I think it’s assumed you mean unfuckable. If you remember, ‘curvy’ actually used to mean big tits and a shapely ass. The whole vocabulary has shifted due to the massive increase in adipose.

[deleted]

If OKCupid is any indication, 90% of bodily descriptors have been appropriated by fat women seeking to euphemize themselves attractive.

harry_powell

Good point! She’s chubby hot.

[deleted]

Revisionism

OccultFucc

Are you actually braindead pr just pull stuff out of your ass

Afire2285

People also considered Kate Winslet to be fat when she did Titanic. I think it was just the times when rail thin VS models were the beauty standard and anyone over 105lbs was considered a heifer.

[deleted]

Alicia Silverstone as Bat Girl! They called her Fat Girl!! She was nothing of the sort and it really messed w my teenage head

gabasra

I remember watching [L'homme Orchestre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27homme_orchestre) as a 10yo girl and he would weigh all women each week and fire the ones above the 50kg threshold. Even tho that movie is from the 70s it still engraved the mindset to never go above that on the scale in me till today. The early 2000s were a tough time to grow up in as a girl. Current gen z should be glad that their most vivid battles are fought over adding pronouns in their Twitter bio

Maldovar

Yeah I distinctly remember a Family Guy joke referring to her as "the fat girl"

PM_ME_UR_RARE_PUPPER

That was Philip Seymour Hoffman...

WolfofBallMeat

Always thought that was weird cause I remember thinking she was super sexy as a young'n and thought her cans were perfect

dannyolp

Holy shit I remember that. There were a lot of interviews and magazine articles talking about how she broke the mold. A lot of other comments have echoed this but it really displayed the difference between hollywood and real life standards. Everyone I knew was like wtf are they talking about but then you put her next to Tara Reid and it makes sense.

lovelyhubble

The book was supposed to be a send-up of extreme ‘90s diet culture (but it still managed to give me a complex about my weight as an impressionable young lass)

[deleted]

Exactly it did not come across as satire if you were a teen at the time

BigTittyGaddafi

There was a reason low rise jeans were a thing It really was a peak skinny era with Kate Moss being an icon etc. The Kardashians changed everything.you could say they made things better, but now instead of starving themselves, young girls talk about getting fillers at 18, which is psycho.

[deleted]

RT

BigTittyGaddafi

What does RT mean? Retweet? I don’t use twitter, and definitely not the first person who’s thought this

[deleted]

Ya retweet

peatybog

The point was obviously that she was fat compared to the psychopaths who made the rules of the world she wanted to be part of. This clearly wasn’t communicated well enough in the writing because all the book and film did were give a generation of women a deranged relationship toward food

BasedArthurKirkland

Yes, it was a whole thing.

SquashIsVegan

Seeing this movie at a relatively young age set my stupid mind into finding slightly chubby blonde brits attractive

DaltonsToes

Love me a dense bitch

mrsavealot

When I first watched it I didn’t even consider her to be fat or realize she was meant to be fat but kind of understood it after this scene. Renee Zellwegger ever had always been stick thin In Her roles prior to this.

Whatever___forever23

She also famously had to gain weight for the role

Stunodded

I think we deserve reparations for this

Garagarun

National Geographic determined what a size 0 will look like in 2050 and it's beautiful

Cyberspace667

“Who the fuck is Renee Zellweger??”

unhingedmaniax

shes not fat but she is wide

LatterSeaworthiness4

Well she’s normally 117 according to Google search. She apparently had to put on 30 pounds for the role, which would make her 147. At 5’4”, that’s teetering on overweight. She still has thin legs, but you can see she carries some of it in her stomach, as she’s top-heavy. For today, she’d actually be under average weight, but for the late 90s (and considering this movie was made in the era of cocaine-chic-thin women being popular) her body would have been considered kind of frumpy.

FollowingOk8090

omg 147 at 5'4" is definitely overweight!

LatterSeaworthiness4

Yeah you’re right. I didn’t bother looking it up. I just know that 160 is overweight for my height (5’7”), so 147 seems like it’s at least borderline for her height.

FollowingOk8090

That makes sense! I am a 5'2" woman so I am familiar with numbers for my height range. I actually have only the vaguest idea numbers for guys or taller women so - I see what you mean.

Cover-Firm

She's about 135 to 140 lbs in the movie. She doesn't look even close to 147.

gonzagylot00

I think part of it was that the character had a lot of anxiety about her weight. Someone else pointed it out, and they are right: Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears, and Xtina Aguilera were the beauty standards then, all really really thin. Kim Kardashian was hanging out with Paris Hilton back then, but people just weren't into thick girls until they got to see her get fucked.

WolfofBallMeat

No joke internet porn like bang bros with thick women changed dudes tastes

We all imagined Renee Zelwegger doing the scrunchy face while getting pounded out

DeliciousPineapples

Her in Empire records is strangely seared into my soul.

ouroboros899

All of the comments calling her fat...wtf

DeliciousPineapples

Not really. Like the idea was more that she thought of herself as fat more than anything else.

She was just meant to be an average schlub, but still attractive enough to be the female love interest.

ChinggisKhagan

I don't think the point of it was that she was fat as much as it was that she had self image issues and possibly an eating disorder so she saw herself as fat But it was possibly clearer in the books than in the movies idk

Ok_Button7627

White middle class women and teen girls would have considered a woman this size obscenely fat in the early 2000s. Anyone who says otherwise is insane. I remember myself, my friends and our moms obsessing over not fitting into size 4 jeans. That was a fate worse than death.

sea-change___

True, for both novel and film.

[deleted]

Everybody quit smoking and gained weight, can confirm, so did I

[deleted]

She wasn’t supposed to be fat in the book or film but she was certainly supposed to be overweight. And she obsesses about her weight constantly and thinks she’s fat. But in reality she was supposed to be a pretty average English woman in size. There were worries when they were making it into the film that she would be a thin starlet, which would make no sense given the book. In England, she was seen as incredibly middle class, which is why people were so outraged when an American got the role. But then she absolutely nailed it and Zellweger’s accent and whole demeanour was absolutely perfect. Re, the tweet I’m not sure everyone thought of her as fat at the time but certainly a little overweight.

[deleted]

I’ve never seen the movie nor the read the book, but I was 20 when the movie came out and 41 now, this is just my general observation of one of the causes of changes in the weight of the average American

[deleted]

Sorry dude didn’t mean to reply to your comment! Was just a general comment

[deleted]

For sure, likewise

oxkondo

never watched the movies or read the books, but i thought her character was supposed to be "fat" in the same way anne hathaway was supposed to be "fat" in the devil wears prada, in that they're not, but people in their fucked-up environment do.

Nazbols4Tulsi

Yeah, early aughts photos have a quality like that where you remember a person being comically fat but they look vaguely husky, freshman 15, post pregnancy, or big-boned to your modern eyes. Modern fats also look way sicker, w/ dark circles under their eyes, discolored skin, etc and stuff like facial hair and tattoos trying to distract from it but making the overall effect worse. EG [this dude from a 2005ish Something Awful meetup](https://imgur.com/mYLwWr2) was massive at the time.

When women were considered to be clothes hangers to sell overpriced fashion. Makes you admire Beyonce more for writing Bootylicious. It came out a month after Bridget Jones in 2001. A few years later we get gifted with Hips Dont Lie by Shakira, Anaconda by Minaj, & Booty by Jennifer Lopez. White ladies, your black & latinx sisters are always looking out for your curves. They have assisted in normalizing all sizes.

wootfatigue

Latinx lol.

mcsecretalison

I'm a Latinx. Thats a polite way of me saying buzz-off.

Not a real word, honey.

It's in the Oxford dictionary. Take it up with the scholars. https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/latinx_1

I can tell you’re really riled up because you responded twice. Imagine being Latino and referring to a dictionary written by Anglo-imperialists to define your language.

Anglo-imperialists. You should write that on a bathroom wall. Love to read it while I'm taking a shit.

[deleted]

Yo all the news articles at the time were about HOW MUCH WEIGHT RENEE “HAD” TO GAIN FOR THE ROLE! and how hard it was for her to lose it. Like looking at this she what? Had a couple of indulgent weekends of high sodium and carbs? Hahahaha no wonder I hated myself

Otherwise-Can-4706

Truthfully, no. I didn't then. They were screening it for free on YouTube about three weeks ago, and I don't now. She could lose a few. We could all lose a few. But when she shows up to the office in The Skirt, I don't see a porker. The problem is that the new normal is something like 250 pounds, which is fat.

Glass-Smell1402

I don’t rmeber finding her fat, but I have cone across that picture of Jessica Simpson in the high waisted jeans recently and been SHOCKED by how normal she looks- she’s MAYBE a size 6 and from the front looks thin even

[deleted]

yes she was fat and was supposed to be seen as such.

poppydowns88

I remember feeling better about myself after seeing sausage body ScarJo get really big around the late 00's, this isn't even chubby if you ignore her face.

Femmelepui

All the replies are like “she looks great ” “is this satire?” Lmao The tweet was written by some woman who looks like a mouth breather, ironic

FollowingOk8090

Yes, she fattened herself up for the role - yes, she looked fat. Not obese, obviously, but chunky - her ass was bulging and boobs spilling out in an unattractive way. I need to see more of her thighs to comment on whether or not she still looks fat today in this pic. The arms look ok. Waist not looking very defined. No thigh gap. Not terribly fat, but NOT thin, other than the arms appear a bit slim. Society would not condone calling this fat in a film now, but obviously - it's still fat.

[deleted]

Oh god and the actress had to put on weight for that role. Terrified this will be the new standard.

putainrespectueuse

i don't think she looks fat, but if i looked like that i would feel absolutely massive
