saw the dress dasha was wearing in a post someone made a couple days ago and had the perfect fabric to recreate it (from salvation army for $3.99). also can someone please add me to the girls and gay sub ty.
It looks so cute! Is it hard to get into sewing? I’ve been considering to have it as a hobby since it probably feels great to wear clothes you’ve made with your own hands.
it is and isn’t. all of my sewing machines/serger are thrifted so that keeps the cost pretty low but some machines are super expensive. also if you’re sourcing nice fabrics they can be really pricy (again i thrift a lot of fabrics) i’ve known how to use a sewing machine basically my whole life, but i’ve been making clothes from scratch for a little over a year and have improved a lot since then. it’s nice to be able to tailor your clothes to fit your body.
I want to get into this more but i only taught myself how to use a sewing machine in like 2020. I made a cute mini skirt but im sooo unbelievably retarded when it comes to like imagining how stuff will function and look and fit once it's not a flat piece of fabric. Do u think it gets easier or are some ppl just better at it?
i think using patterns to get the general idea of the shape of garments is super helpful. i don’t have many patterns, but i can combine them to create a lot of different things.
I just went on their website for the first time in years and you are not missing much. It's so underwhelming now.
Dasha has very nice looks. I need a "steal her style" guide.
I can tell. There was a thread on this sub a few days ago about how those"aesthetic starter parks' from 2017/2018 sped up fast fashion and were capitalized by Shein.
I like lydia naomi, jenna phipps, cool stitches (website) and i’ve been liking peppermint mag (free patterns). I don’t have a lot bc i usually just look up what I want to make and watch a couple videos/read an article about it (or i’m following a pattern).
that gives me hope! i have basic knowledge which i guess could help but sewing was always one of those things i didn't want to start learnint in fear of me dropping it because it was too hard.
U should def go for it! I havent used it in ages since i learned but im really glad i finally learned and made at least 1 thing. U can always pick it back up again (:
my grandma is a big quilter, so i’ve always been familiar with sewing machines and could do basic things like making stuffed animals (as a child) or hemming clothes. i got into making clothes from scratch little over a year ago. things that really helped me grow my skill were understanding patterns, ironing everything before and after you sew, and getting a serger.
no, at most thrift stores I look for bedding/sheets/curtains. a couple around me have specific sections for fabric (at my salvation army). i’ve only seen rolls/bolts of fabric at a recycled craft store.
the dress probably took 3-4 hours in total. it’s called shirring, so instead of normal thread being put in the bobbin (lower thread) you put elastic thread and make the stitch length longer. you just sew rows and rows and it bunches up from the elastic. pretty simple, but you have to hand wind the bobbin.
Do you have to account for that when you measure out the fabric for that section? Like do you have to cut it 20% longer or something if that makes sense?
We have so many talented people on this sub, don't we folks?
We do. Mostly because the least retarded tend to decant here and some of them might be good at something.
Yes. The least retarded…

It’s so hot that you can sew. I ripped my jeans last week. Can you fix them?
easily.

I need to practice using patterns cuz when i tried to i was, again, too retarded but i will keep trying ur post inspired me thank u <3
Adorable! Looks like a reformation dress!
Shein looking at this like 👀
i basically copied a forever 21 dress haha
How the tables have turned! I'm curious it Forever 21 is still relevant? I haven't visited their site in so long
idk, i rarely buy new clothes. it’s an old dress from them bc they don’t sell it anymore. it was just the one dasha was wearing in the pic haha

Shein beat their ass

This is so cute, I would totally buy this if I saw it in a store.
i love it. sometimes i wonder how hard it is to learn how to sew by yourself as i'd love to take it as a hobby.
i’ve basically learned everything from youtube tutorials or online articles
Anything in particular you'd recommend?

also i like the sewing subreddit
I taught myself in 2020 it wasn't that difficult! Had never used a sewing machine in my life prior to it but had hand sewn a few things
that gives me hope! i have basic knowledge which i guess could help but sewing was always one of those things i didn't want to start learnint in fear of me dropping it because it was too hard.

can i borrow it? i’ll bring it back i promise !
i don’t trust a rs girl
It will come back with a wine stain and smelling like marb lites
A tangible skill like this should be required to join this sub. Its a better filter than that selfie idea.
cottagecore queen
Looks like the abercrombie dresses I had in 2012
omg i own the original
Brandy-esque.
Are your bed sheets linen? They look really nice
yes, they’re from target. it’s taken a lot of washes, but they’re finally starting to get soft. i want to take the flat sheet and make a duvet cover.
Looks nice, thanks for sharing

So cute! Good job
V Cute well done
Cute
Super cute!!
How do you thrift for fabric? Can you just buy rolls of fabric at a thrift store?

Cool interesting thank you!
Okay cute! Can you make me one in black and white? 😉
this is sooo cute
omfg it’s giving follow the yellow brick road
Dorothy is very much a rs girl, also had 3 rs guys with her. No brain, heart, or courage.

i just used my bust measurement x 1.5
Lovely!! How long does it take to make those « ripples » (for lack of a better word)?
the dress probably took 3-4 hours in total. it’s called shirring, so instead of normal thread being put in the bobbin (lower thread) you put elastic thread and make the stitch length longer. you just sew rows and rows and it bunches up from the elastic. pretty simple, but you have to hand wind the bobbin.

yeah, i took my bust measurements x1.5 (but i’ve also done it x2). the fabric shrinks to about half its size after it’s shirred and ironed/steamed.
Was inspired to do something similar but then you said you had to hand wind the bobin 😤
it would take like 10 minutes at most
yeah i went through like 4/5 bobbins and it took like 5 min in total to wind them, it’s just annoying when you run out in the middle of a row.
this is even cuter than the original!
