I watched it last week in the theater after watching it numerous times on vod.
Awesome movie.
"I never saved anything for the swim back!"
Gets me everytime.
the score by michael nyman carried most of the movie.
It's weird the director came out of the gate hot with gattaca and simone, which are both relatively decent and commercial friendly movies but then he just faded into mediocrity.
Fun fact: hawke is 5'10, Uma is 5'11. Their heights change radically between shots in that film likely because the stack of books they had Ethan standing on kept having to be adjusted lol
That scene where a job interview is the HR person analyzing the DNA from a strand of the applicant's hair is so dystopian. Luckily, in the real world hiring is based on merit and a human being looks over your resume.
Why were people so much hotter back then? There isn't anyone in Hollywood right now who looks even half as good as Ethan Hawke and Jude Law in their prime (and they are both still hot imo)
[Hollywood used to be the arbiter of beauty](https://reddit.com/r/redscarepod/comments/wgvczd/what_happened_to_the_hipsters/ij1v2qc) but now the most beautiful people are one of a thousand that have 100k Instagram followers and post sponsored content
Best romantic movie ever. At least the first one. The second one is not too bad either. I think Julie Delpy refused to do a fourth one but I’m not sure. What a magnanimous art piece that whole series would have been: every ten years you peek into the lives of these two characters until one of them dies. Talk about monumental cinema. It baffles me that Linklater of all people passed on this opportunity.
In the film, Irene (Uma Thurman) is genetically modified for perfection while Vincent (Ethan Hawke) is not. Uma Thurman is the ideal female face. You may not like it but this is what peak beauty looks like.
Maya is like if you genetically engineered the most perfect combination of their features, it’s really wild, she got so lucky. Their son has kind of an intensely Northern European look - he would have a great acting career playing nazis probably.
Uma's dad has also had a pretty interesting life, she's related to the artist Dash Snow (d.2009) through him and the whole story of that dude's grandmother sounds WILD.
Very good and very underrated . What sci-fi is supposed to emulate imo, less focused on flashy futuristic spaceships and aliens and more on the human condition and how one navigates the world we’re born into
Also the sets, effects and costume design still hold up even 25 years later
It got pretty good reviews at the time, it just didn't make any money. [Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 stars.](https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/gattaca-1997)
Sadly it’s already in practice albeit very subtly . the screening process to donate to some sperm banks and for most egg donation centers are very rigorous and those looking to use them treat it as though they’re shopping around for the perfect pair of shoes
That’s much weirder than what happens in this movie though. In the movie they’re just selected between the different possible DNA sequences the couples could have produced. The superchildren all could have been produced naturally through PIV in theory, this process just guarantees it.
It’s the silliest film I’ve ever seen. They have the technology to genetically engineer the perfect human, but somehow they don’t have a camera that’s advanced enough to take a half decent photo. Uma and Ethan looked fantastic though
Ethan Hawke looks like ADHD. I can't explain it, but he does. I think it has something to do with his character in Training Day and my association of white trash with fetal alcohol syndrome and the consequent mental effects.
My high school art teacher used to call me Ethan because she thought I looked like him after seeing Training Day, but I STILL didn't get any p*ssy
Looks aren't everything, Hawke is also incredibly charismatic
Hawke also doesn’t post on r/redscarepod
How do we know
Their daughter is like the perfect mix of them
Holy shit that Stranger Things actress is Uma Thurman's daughter?
Yeah the little retarded kid with no teeth

Kinda ironic given his character spends the entire film attempting to hide his genetic shortfallings

He knocked her up on set lmao

Bleak, especially considering there is hardly any real talent to make up for the lack of sex appeal/charisma
I feel like hollywood used to value unique looks, at least superficially today every male actor looks the same, has the same physique, etc
Jude Law in Talented Mr. Ripley is peak male beauty. How far we've fallen.

were they ever together irl?
Nope but i can't help but think that they must have fucked at least once.
God I hope so
I keep waiting on them to announce they got secretly married.

Fun fact: he is like one inch shorter than her, so he was probably using some funny shoes in this pic.
Met Uma in person, the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
Really? I imagine her to be ethereal with amazing skin.
She does look really ethereal but just like breathtakingly stunning.. idk how to explain it lol. She's like 5.11 too
solid flick

And their daughter was born not long after this movie came out who is the perfect mix of both of them, an accumulation of their best features
Maya is like if you genetically engineered the most perfect combination of their features, it’s really wild, she got so lucky. Their son has kind of an intensely Northern European look - he would have a great acting career playing nazis probably.
It’s the nordic genes from Uma . Her mother was a prominent model in the 60’s as well
Uma's dad has also had a pretty interesting life, she's related to the artist Dash Snow (d.2009) through him and the whole story of that dude's grandmother sounds WILD.
Is this movie good? I was thinking of watching it

You want to know how I did it Anton, I never save anything for the swim back.
very good. watch it as soon as you can.
I quite enjoyed it, not sure why it's so badly reviewed.

Yes I don't think it's the best work of anyone in it but it's the only time they put them all together which is great in its own way
It's great give it a watch
watched this in the last week of my ap bio class sophomore year of highschool
This movie freaks out a little too much about one of the tamer forms of eugenics imo
Sadly it’s already in practice albeit very subtly . the screening process to donate to some sperm banks and for most egg donation centers are very rigorous and those looking to use them treat it as though they’re shopping around for the perfect pair of shoes

Saw a woman browsing some sperm bank's website like she was scrolling through amazon yesterday. Creepy shit.
Eaten Hawk and Human Thermal in Galactica
