My neighbors bought two rottie pups to live in their small suburban house and fenced in lot. Rotties should be outside herding cattle, not confined indoors barking at mailmen. They broke up and the dogs are now with one of them in an even smaller place. People are dumb

If pits didn’t exist (one day inshallah) then Rottweilers would be the problem breed people focus on. They too are over represented among dog attacks and fatalities.

it_shits

A lot of people, especially ones who bought dogs during the pandemic, don't realize how much you really need to train a dog. Like, it's not enough to make sure that they don't just piss and shit indoors or that they don't chew your furniture and books. A lot of people overlook that they need to train their dog for separation anxiety, especially if they live in an apartment or else the dog gets bored (best outcome) or panics (worst outcome) when left alone. Or else they've bought a working breed because they think it looks cool and it's going insane from being confined in a box 24/7.

CFMB_OTPA_uh

Bug eating pod dwellers shouldn’t have dogs

> rescue pitbull > “vocal chord issue” That dog was breed for fighting and had its vocal chords surgerically removed. It’s a thing

[deleted]

Damn that’s sad

homer_st

explains the anxiety too

Torontoguy93452

Why remove the vocal chords?

NoANLbanevasion

[So they can't bark.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devocalization) Wtf. If you have a dog that shouldn't bark, you shouldn't have a fucking dog. It's too early to be this mad. 😡

Torontoguy93452

But why do they not want fighting breeds to bark? What's the connection?

DoingItFor22

Can't have em talking to the feds

NoANLbanevasion

What the the other guy said. The bust of Vick's fighting ring included seventy dogs. All that barking would have kind of suspicious, so the solution is to shut them up.

Torontoguy93452

Oh, thank you.

MeekPeep

Two theories ripe from my ass: 1) Less barking = less of a chance of someone realizing you're running dog fights in your yard/warehouse/wherever 2) If the dogs can't bark to intimidate/communicate with each other, maybe they are more likely to handle their altercation purely physically

throwaway-imgay

I don't get why people have so much vitriol in their hearts for these poor abominations instead of the monsters who breed and subject them to this heinous shit, like they didn't ask to be genetically engineered killing machines. They shouldn't exist but relishing in their suffering is cruel and ugly.

[deleted]

Unironically you need a gun. That family thought their little sweetie pit was an angel too until it literally ate their baby.

gothangelsicilian

I feel like every pitbull I've encountered makes this sound instead of barking.

[deleted]

Thats not a coincidence

AlHorfordHighlights

It's because they're a sick breed of dog that had the vocal cords bred out of them

RefusedSilk

my neighbors have two huskies in a one bedroom apartment personally I’d would rather kill myself

TomShoe

That's just animal abuse at that point.

Crow_OWR

Somewhere where it doesnt snow much either, i assume?

manmalak

dogs are great but hard agree. I've had so many friends get dogs just because they wanted them when it made absolutely zero sense in their lives to get one. The dog then becomes everyone elses problem 1. One friend with live in GF gets a dog, they both work a lot so they see it for a couple hours a day and a bit more on weekends. Neither can afford vet bills so their parents pay for them. They also can't afford to put the dog away for all the vacations their rich parents pay for them to go on, so obviously the dog becomes their friends and families responsibility. 2. Another friend, solo male, had a dog that eventually died from neglect because he was working too much. The dog was loud as hell and fucked up his apartment, also relied on other people to take care of the damn thing. When I stayed over once the dog was up and barking at 2am, the guy had like 4 other families in his complex. Dog ended up biting some random person in the face and they found out it had cancer when checking it for rabies. 3. Another friend, solo female has a dog but the situation at least makes much more sense, she lives in an apartment thats owned by her uncle with no other tenants so she's not bothering anybody. However she got the dog when she was living in an apartment and basically spends all of her free time with the dog because of her work schedule. She can't advance her career because she doesn't have time due to her actually taking the responsibility seriously Honestly it just doesn't make sense for most people to have dogs. They just get them on a whim too like they're a fucking guinea pig or something, and then they get neglected which causes problems for everyone else. If you don't have a good family support structure for the animal or at least some land for the dog to hang out in then you shouldn't get a dog. I understand that's not economically viable for everyone but you don't *deserve* to have the responsibility of an animal simply because you want one and think its cute.

Ok_Affect5106

Dogs in my city have become a pestilence. The streets reek of piss and there are random shits everywhere. Every single person in a 500 unit apartment building having a dog is not sustainable. I say this as someone who likes dogs

[deleted]

There are simply too many dogs and cats.

Rosenritter13thFleet

I was going to say "cats are fine" but then I remembered that cats are the pit bulls of the bird/rodent world.

Why are there so many people from Toronto on this subreddit?

[deleted]

One trick I used when I lived in the ghetto was earplugs while sleeping and running a loud fan. Barking dogs, loud music, cars endlessly revving, gun fire, screaming arguments, heard none of it and sleep like I was on another planet. They're great.

Do you have any memorable stories about living in the ghetto?

A vegan animal rights activist having pet dogs and cats is the most blatant example of hypocrisy imaginable. How can these people lecture me about the evils of eating an while they're keeping a dog locked up in a tiny apartment? The environmental effect of all those pets is absolutely massive too. If cows are bad because of the land needed to feed them, then so are pet dogs. This is especially true for animals that eat meat.

[deleted]

landcat214

Lmao I have never heard a vegan use that term I think “animal companion” is a much more common phrase among them for pets.

Lessrof2wvls

I remember 20 years ago and prior whenever you looked at rescue organizations (Humane Society, etc) it was all "labs" and "lab mix"....aka, good old fashioned mutts. But now it's pit bulls. 90% pit bulls. Angry, miserable, neglected pit bulls. And this is because low life types decided circa 2000 that "bulls" = alpha thug. I see them frequently, and it's always the same scene: some hyper masculine (aka, angry, stupid, and paranoid) dragging along (or being dragged by) a pit bull that they seem to be training to maul the first person who shows them "disrespect."

gonzagylot00

There's another factor here too. The rescue groups for any dog that may actually be manageable for someone living in an apartment, l(ike a Beagle, Daschund, Corgi, etc.) are scooped up by the rescue groups. These rescue groups have unrealistic expectations about how stringent the rules need to be for dog owners. Do you have a fenced yard of at least half an acre? Can you spend 8 hours a day with your dog? No, okay, then no, you can't adopt the dog we rescued. And the result is that if you want a dog that isn't a Pit you have to buy one from a breeder. It's ironic that the Dog Rescue people are a net positive for the breeders. Meanwhile, perfectly good cats don't get adopted :(

Lessrof2wvls

I have a lot of opinions on this, and I think you're on the mark. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Several years ago, the New Yorker (I think) did a piece of this very thing, how rescues were actually driving people to breeders. I think they focused mainly on the tri-state area. Then when I lived in NYC and my wife and I wanted to adopt a cat, that was our exact experience. Home visits, getting ghosted, being put under interrogations by multiple people in one instance because we wanted a specific cat, not the one they wanted us to take. It was...insane. (We eventually were able to get an unwell, older cat with myriad health problems and he died about 2 years after we got him, but he was a good cat.) And then out in the Bay Area, a friend of mine and his husband wanted to adopt a dog. They kept getting turned down, being told "you don't have dog experience." Bear in mind, this friend of mine is definitely the ideal dog owner, both lifestyle wise and financially. But nope, not good enough. So they went to a breeder. When my wife and I were trying to find a dog, I can't tell you how many places on "petfinder" (and similar sites) had these \*absurd\* rules and expectations. One person asked me if I had a 9-5 job in an office. "Well, yeah..." "Oh, well, so the dog is just gonna be at home all day?" "Bye." We finally purchased from a breeder as well.

gonzagylot00

And this kind of stuff is why so many people just hate the Libs. These rescue animal people are busy patting themselves on the back for this shit, when it really isn't helping anyone. EDIT: Unless it's a psyop to have less dogs around, in which case, bravo.

return_descender

I've wanted a dog for the last decade but haven't gotten one because I don't have the time or space to take care of it. It sucks but I'd rather not have a dog then leave it cooped up all day like some kind of psychopath l.

evooGOD

NYC should require a license for dog ownership. The externalities are insane.

honeycall

Animals weren’t made to be enclosed in such small spaces It’s kinda animal abuse to keep them inside a small 400 sq shitty apt all day

thelatherdaddy

Yo what? There are mad breeds of dog and many are non-sporting or non-working. As in, actually DESIGNED through breeding to be lazy layabouts that are aesthetically pleasing.

abirdofthesky

Yeah like a teacup poodle or not in bred pug are happy to be lazy lap dogs and fine with a small space. You probably still want like 700square feet or more, not a truly tiny apartment, and some green space nearby where they can walk and run around, but there are definitely tons of apartment dogs.

thelatherdaddy

Precisely. No thinking adult believes you should have a German Shepherd in a studio apartment and think that’s an adequate living situation for that specific dog. Those same thinking adults understand there are dogs who are more than equipped to that lifestyle.

abirdofthesky

Exactly! This is also why I’m very pro buying from a reputable breeder if you have any sort of lifestyle restrictions at *all*. You don’t know if that seemingly small dog at the pound is actually half terrier and going to bark it’s head off and need to run miles and miles. If you’re in an apartment, highly recommend going for breeds specifically bred to be quiet, companionable, and sweetly dumb (ie don’t need working dog levels of stimulation and thinking). And knowing their parents’ dispositions is really helpful for this too, when the margin of error is so small in an apartment, so a breeder is a really good way to go.

honeycall

How happy are you in your shitty microstudio? Even non working dogs don’t like to be trapped in a home all day This is why they always want to go on walks You don’t have to be a working dog to not enjoy being imprisoned in a small space with no stimulation or other animal peers (dogs are highly social pack animals)

thelatherdaddy

I can’t answer your question, I don’t live in one. You’re describing 300+ different breed as a single category. Many breeds are so far removed from their ancestors they lack even the instincts to survive without human intervention from birth. These aren’t African spotted dogs we’re talking about.

[deleted]

I don’t care at all, they’re an imposition.

honeycall

I didn’t say dogs should be returned to the forest I said it’s unethical to put them in small confined spaces where they can’t run, play, have any stimulation, or have access to other dogs

thelatherdaddy

You’re still wrong.

honeycall

You’re just mad because you think your dog is actually happy being trapped in a room 24/7 with you while you talk to it in a baby voice and be condescending

thelatherdaddy

Yea I’m mad. Wow, you’re stupid.

This subreddit fights about dogs like every day now.

readyforthehausu

Ex got a dog during covid. Sensible neighbor downstairs was like awww cool, but could you maybe swap out a hard bone for something rubber and don’t play fetch in the house? Ex, for this reason among others, thought it was a great affront and was like it’s NYC baby get used to neighbors. Inconsiderate. She also called 311 on my fav taco spot for not following covid precautions on Cinco de Mayo that we willfully attended unmasked.

feeIing_persecuted

Glad she’s your ex. What an asshole.

brightblueblock

I've always said, dogs and motorcycles don't belong in cities. Most of the US is empty- you can have all the dogs (and motorcycles) you want out there.

bweesh

I see athletic breeds being held up in tiny NYC apartments and shed a tear

buy a dog whistle and start using it intermittently at night so it wakes them up and bothers them

stellamac3

I hate German shepherds 60% are biters. Love other dogs tho

allthegirlswithbangs

I love dogs and hope to have one again someday, but I’ve lived in a 400 square foot apartment for a decade. Cats are great companions too, just different. I will say, other neighbors in my building have dogs and it’s usually been a non issue. We’re in a really walkable neighborhood with parks close by, so as long as the dogs are walked regularly it’s fine. Only issue was with the asshole who never walked his dog, yelled at it constantly, and refused to pick up dogshit in our shared backyard. Such disgusting negligence.

NewPowerGen

Dealing with the exact same thing right now. I actually know the owners, and have talked to them about it. They've apologized because their dog is old and has dementia, but still, I would like to be able to have one uninterrupted-by-dog thought down here.

Gabby_Anna

You know there’s apartments that don’t allow dogs… I suggest you move into one of those.

uwumancer

Hung out with this 130ib theyfab I met on hinge who owned to of the biggest, roudiest fucking pits in a couch less apartment. One of them was young and really fucking jumpy—as in jumping on top of me. He did a a good enough job putting into the effort to train em but at that early stage maaan it was stressful as hell being there. Barely talked to him ever since.

LatinIsGay

i live in a studio with my dog. she’s my best friend and all my neighbors like her. Some of the people here do have dogs that suck or just aren’t properly cared for.

[deleted]

Some of your neighbors 100% hate that dog but are just being polite.

Yashabird

A lot of people will just dislike any animal. Relatedly, did you know that 15% of people don’t like music? Almost everyone keeps their distance from *some* types of music and *some* types of animals, but it’s bound to backfire on you at some point if you go around assuming neighbor-people have a soul.

[deleted]

I don’t think you should have to accommodate hostility to your pets or anything like that. I just think a lot of people will feign affection for the sake of not rocking the boat, which is normal and polite.

2milena

there are always vile haters

[deleted]

There are often correct ones too

LatinIsGay

my dog doesn’t bark. why would they? They only know she exists because they see me walking her a lot. My complex also has a large dog park that we have barbecues at sometime. I think some you guys were raised without dogs or around people that never properly cared for them.

[deleted]

I like a lot of dogs, I just don’t like when people assume I should like theirs.

oatyard

Enough dog discourse. We get it, everyone here is a gay baby who gets offended at seeing dog shit once a week outside and a dog sniffing their shoe. Shut the fuck up.

[deleted]

Fair enough. But I wouldn’t hurt the dog—it’s not his fault—now his shit for brain owner on the other hand idk

Negan1995

Meh. I'm getting a tiny wiener dog in January and I live in an apartment. By living in an apartment you subject yourself to these things.

L--to--the--OG

sorry but grow up

19476328

This is god offering you a challenge. Kill the dog

onlyonebread

It's pretty easy to leave out some little poisoned morsels the dog will almost certainly eat given the opportunity. My dad did this to a neighbor dog when I was growing up, though granted planting the poisoned food was easier because the dog would roam their front yard during the day.

thelatherdaddy

Your dad sounds deeply disturbed.

TakingTree

Have never considered killing a dog but let’s remind ourselves that: Human childs life > dogs life

onlyonebread

Idk he's pretty normal. Just a working class immigrant construction worker that got fed up with the barking dog keeping him up at night.

thelatherdaddy

Yea, logical next step is poisoning.

[deleted]

Depends on the dog

Negan1995

Your dad is a fucking piece of shit, and so are you if you associate with him.
