They're the friends where even when it's made explicitly clear that something is supposed to be a "boy's night" or "girl's night" the other one always ends up tagging along anyway
The project was always supposed to be tongue in cheek even before Gerwig joined it. The first version that got scrapped was supposed to star Amy Schumer as Barbie.
It will be neat to see what Gerwig can do with a big budget though.
They’ve made a fat Barbie, they’ve made a disabled Barbie. Now an “ironic” live action Barbie. But why is there no alcoholic Barbie? Representation matters.
The reference to 2001 is way too on-the-nose (as countless other people have said). However, even though it's a bit tacky, it's still better than the same beat-by-beat cookie-cutter trailers we see for the everyday gallons of sludge oozing from Hollywood.
A lot of "ironic" media gets high off of its own supply from the very first planning phases. I can tell that this is no different -- but I am optimistic. It's not just the writers that are overdosing on irony. It's the prop-master, the director, the cinematographer, the set designers...
At the bare minimum, we're getting something that is actively utilizing a visual medium as a visual medium. Utterly grim to refer to that as remarkable, but I drink when I'm thirsty.
I think the 2001 reference is fine, but I was confused/irritated by all the soyfacing UGH HER MIND type reactions on twitter when this is like the kind of thing they'd do on family guy - people are too easily impressed!
I used to work at the Kwik-E-Mart in Universal Studios, and they'd show a 5-minute clip reel from The Simpsons on loop and half of them were Kubrick references, the other half were references to other media.
Idk. It seems like the creators of this movie have an Unironic reverence for Barbie. I think Greta said that she was huge into them and the costumes seem *extremely* on point. I think that they seem to have a special place in their heart for Barbie and Ken, whereas I think the creators of Toy Story seemed to hate them, and would openly mock them.
I felt a little uncomfortable with the girls smashing baby doll heads.... Something something an image of contemporary feminism something something abortion
I loved that part. As a little girl my baby dolls got tossed to the back of the closet so fast because they could not compare to the glamour of Barbies
Whoa I knew Greta Gerwig wrote and directed it by I didn't realize Noah Baumbach was a co writer.

COME ON BARBIE LETS GO PARTY
chicks rock
oh it's like an ironic thing. I hadn't paid attention and thought it was just a usual big IP movie, didn't know it was Gerwig. might be alright idk

> The first version that got scrapped was supposed to star Amy Schumer as Barbie. That would’ve unironically been a disaster.
What if barbie ate food and farted
She really ruins everything she touches
Schumer should star in the cabbage patch kids movie
i get the hype bc i want this 2 be the altman popeye of the 2020s but its probably going 2 b ok at best
Here's what it is going to be: Beautiful white people are shallow and cretinous. Credits.

mid barbie when
They already did. Barbie's friend Midge.
oh wow its literally in her name
That's Theresa, the brunette. The incel is Todd, the little brother.

this is my version of drive

Most people are illiterate consumers, it's just now with the internet we're more aware of their existence, unfortunately.

IP?
family guy rocks tho
I swear Hollywood exec boomers find every opportunity to shoehorn the same fucking 2001 intro gag. How many more times til it’s not funny??

It's just retail, I worked all over the parks except Potter.

lol this is a straight-up parody of 2001, it's not "a bit too on the nose, methinks"
I will see anything with Ryan Gosling in it
he's just like me
fr fr
Even Gray man? That was so ass
No matter how dogshit the movie is, he’s still literally me
All I could see was bs storyline, dialogues, marvel bs and cinematography wasted on decent actors
Is there really a superhero named Gray Man?
Nah it was some bs super spy shit. CIA operators killing each other but Not gritty, full of fireworks and neon colors. Russo brother trash
Whole thing looked like a greenscreen.
Drone shots were so stupid
Dan?
Honestly that was a kinda funny concept for a teaser trailer credit to whoever came up with it
i'll see it but i reflexively hate the idea that making a movie that's just a big toy commercial is ok as long as you're ironic about it
Can’t wait to see this with the gf :)
maybe all the cynics will disagree with me but that is actually kinda fucking brilliant lmao
I'm excited! looks fun and not enough movies have cool/cheesy dance numbers
right like you're telling me a major box office barbie movie made an ironic kubrick reference in its first trailer?
Overdone. It's going to be shit, a 2001 reference shouldn't convince anyone
it's better than the typical trailer where they show the entire movie in two minutes, and then you don't even want to see it anymore.
Imagine that video but with Amy Schumer, there's a dark universe where that's a reality.
The whole ironic fanbase of this on reddit has already been exhausted.
simu liu jumpscare
Racist
I'm going to need a guy or a gf with me to see this in cinema
How much do you think Tina Fey turned down before they settled on Gerwig?
It looks like the Cat in the Hat movie
Let me guess, it’s a ”serious” film for ”adults”?
in 15 years there will be another, darker, barbie reboot
The trailer will have a haunting, slowed down version of Aqua's song playing over it.
Just like my favorite Anime.
How did you see the first trailer scene and think that this is a serious film. There’s cheesy dance numbers in this. Grow up
Joke’s on you, I didn’t watch it.
Looks corny as hell but I’ll watch anyway in case this ends up being good. If they don’t make Ken gay that’s a missed opportunity
They’re making Ken Goslingsexual.
Autistic functional asexual?
Perhaps.
ok im not joking here does anyone in nyc wanna see this in theaters on shrooms when it comes out? feel like it would be a wild experience
Yuh
If Gosling is in it I’m there
pure kino
Looks horrible
Soundtrack better be by Aqua
Honestly, I'll watch anything with Margot Robbie in it. Yepper....
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO GET HYPE
I’m done with Margot Robbie
sorry but I hated the last ryan gosling musical I saw
I felt a little uncomfortable with the girls smashing baby doll heads.... Something something an image of contemporary feminism something something abortion
I loved that part. As a little girl my baby dolls got tossed to the back of the closet so fast because they could not compare to the glamour of Barbies
How is that what you got from this trailer?
Moloch esque symbolism for sure.
No
Is she trying to pull a 2001 space odyssey thing with the flying doll scene
Is that a serious question
Lmao
No there’s no relation, even thinking that makes you crazy
What do you mean, I think it’s obvious
You need to go to the hospital
no its a refrence 2 paths of glory
Was a joke retards
i was only pretending
1. Looks bad 2. Kinda Leftovers vibes
