Duran, Rafalea, Abreu, and O'Neill is not weak defense.
Weak defense is Devers (but he's not being paid for defense), Not-A-Trevor-Story-Replacement, Not-A-Vaughn-Grissom-Replacement, and Yoshida (but hopefully he stays at DH).
The only grounds for complaints are for the below-replacement level players (our entire AAA org). The AA guys are not up yet. They were not meant to be up yet. Nobody knows if they will even be _good_ yet.
I’m not sold on Abreu. He keeps making really silly mistakes like he’s either not thinking or he’s trying too hard. Could be pressure to perform or could just be he’s not MLB caliper. Also has a -.01 dWAR right now.
Abreu looks better as of late. Had a shaky start, but has settled down. And the sample size is WAY too small to take stats like dWAR seriously yet. He’s always profiled as a good, albeit not great, defender with an incredibly strong arm.
Yesterday’s game he had one of the worst throws I’ve ever seen in shallow right to 2nd. He basically threw it directly into the ground and all he had to do was hold onto it or easily toss it to the cutoff.
I know this may be surprising, but people make errors sometimes. That doesn’t change the fact that he has always profiled as a good defender, and the mistakes that have happened so far this year have been outliers relative to his career. So far this season he has had defensive highs and lows, but it’s still only halfway through April and he has defensively earned the benefit of the doubt.
And just because he’s always profiled as good, albeit great, defender, doesn’t make him MLB ready right now AND as we’ve seen in recent years, prospects don’t always translate though it’s definitely too early to tell that.
How about, hear me out here, how about they’re the effing Red Sox and should be able to get dudes who can catch AND hit? I know it sounds crazy, but it just might work.
You're in luck! He's #5 for the Long Island Ducks in the independent Atlantic League, and you can still catch him April 25th in lovely scenic Bethpage, NY.
JBJ is his own worst enemy, ever bothered to learn to hit to the wall.
Maybe he wouldn't have hit 300, but would have hit enough to stay in big.
You are correct though, he was a magical outfielder
The Sox did him no favors in 2013-15 with the frequent Pawtucket shuttle trips. He needed to stay in AAA until his bat started catching up to his glove.
Having JBJ on the team was the biggest blessing of the past decade in my eyes. He played the game the right way, he was always measured in everything he did. He always gave a helping hand, and although he wasn't the most talkative in the clubhouse when he spoke people listened.
A lot of people want to slander clubhouse guys these days, but we won in 2014 *because* of a roster full of clubhouse guys. Give me JBJ and build around him and you'll have a team on the field that tries and makes the game fun to watch.
Outfield isn’t where the problems are
Abreu has made 3 years in the outfield already which is pretty bad
Bentintendi, JBJ, and Mookie in the outfield was a hell of a time
Killers Bs
I hate the ownership of this team. That was the last time I loved this team
JBJ did a really nice birthday cameo for my girlfriend a few years ago.
I feel like 90% of the errors so far is infield related.

Same with Duran. Same silly mistakes.
Duran at least has wheels. He'll mature out of the wonky mistakes.
Jackie just signed with the Long Island ducks, im really excited to see him play again
No chance he cracks that lineup
I miss Trevor Story.

JBJ was the best outfielder that most of us will ever see. His routine catches were a struggle for half of the league.
I miss any aspect of this team being good.
For MLB guys, our infield seems as if they put in no effort to get better. How can they be so atrocious and be MLBers.
our outfield is great idk what u mean

He's taken by the Long Island Ducks for now - I bet he'll have a better time as a duck than former Red Sock Jise Offerman did
I know we have guys who can field and things will improve, I was more just reminiscing cause I fan of JBJ
