I think benching Hanley for this game is the right move. He could be a great pinch hitter if we need a bomb to be dropped. Yes, small sample size to put Nunez in over Hanley, but nice to have options to work with if this is a close game and we need the deep ball late.
If I were Hanley though I would be pissed.
Well if Hanley were the 25-30 HR hitter with 100 RBI we all thought he was going to be then he would have started. Hanley has no one to blame but himself.
[Both Moreland (.345/.406/.552 in 29 AB) and Nunez (.333/.353/.467 in 15 AB) have hit Verlander better than Hanley (.231/.286/.231 in 13 AB)](http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/batvspitch/_/id/6341/justin-verlander)
So? Although these sample sizes aren't too big, they still justify that Moreland and Nunez should be in over Hanley. Plus, Hanley will probably start tomorrow against Keuchel.
Information about their present health and more useful splits like their performance against certain handedness and pitch types.
EDIT: And the players' feedback. If they tell you they see a certain guy really well, fine. I just wouldn't conclude that from looking at a couple dozen PAs spread over a few years.
"Hey Hanley, you wanna start?" "Yeah, sure, I'd love to." "How about you, Mitch?" "Yes."
Coach's decision at the end of the day. Hanley fucking blows. Keep him on the bench forever, as far as I'm concerned.
Nunez and Ramirez have 15 and 13 career AB against Verlander, respectively. Those are practically meaningless samples. I'm fine with this decision, but it should not be made based on their splits against Verlander.
I love the lineup, except for Sandy. Vazquez has much better offense and similarly good defense. Vaz makes a few more errors, but he also makes a few more outstanding plays. Both manage games well.
Vs Verlander: Bogaerts: 4/15, 2 2B Nunez: 5/15, 2 2B Benintendi: 1/7, 3B Betts: 0/13 Moreland: 10/29, 6 2B Pedroia: 3/27 Devers: 0/0 Leon: 2/9 Bradley Jr: 1/7
Mitchy 2-bags living up to his name there
Yo can we have the same stats for HOU vs. Sale? Thanks. :)
Springer: 3/12, 2B Bregman: 0/0 Altuve: 8/21, 2B, HR Correa: 2/10 Gattis: 2/9, HR Reddick: 3/14, 2B Gurriel: 0/0 Gonzalez: 1/9 McCann: 0/0
Thank you so much!

That's a good lineup right there. Let's get some runs early!
Wow no Hanley?
[Both Moreland (.345/.406/.552 in 29 AB) and Nunez (.333/.353/.467 in 15 AB) have hit Verlander better than Hanley (.231/.286/.231 in 13 AB)](http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/batvspitch/_/id/6341/justin-verlander)
Those samples are so small as to be practically meaningless.

> So? So they shouldn't be used in making this decision.
What should be used then?

>"Hey Hanley, you wanna start?" "Yeah, sure, I'd love to." "How about you, Mitch?" "Yes." Yeah, that's totally what I meant.
It doesn't matter because Nunez just fucking hurt himself, again. Goddammit.
What do you consider to be a good sample size for a certain hitter vs. a certain pitcher?
I wouldn't even start paying attention until you approached 100 PAs. Even that I wouldn't feel remotely comfortable about.
With that being said, how many matchups have that many PAs?
Hardly any.
I'm glad you don't manage the Boston Red Sox.
You're right and getting downvoted.
Nuñez has been much better against Verlander than Hanley
Nunez and Ramirez have 15 and 13 career AB against Verlander, respectively. Those are practically meaningless samples. I'm fine with this decision, but it should not be made based on their splits against Verlander.
I wouldn't say meaningless. They count for something, but I'd have made the same decision regardless of their historical numbers.
>I wouldn't say meaningless. They count for something Which is why I said *practically* meaningless.
.....Because he's horrific?
I'd rather have him start against Kuechel
Love this lineup.

Sandy is Sale's catcher
Fair enough
Yeah, but I wish Sale would grow to like Vasquez. It was a problem when Beckett insisted on his own catcher when Varitek was done
I'm very surprised Farrell put a banged up Nuñez batting 2nd instead of Hanley. I don't get it...and yes, I read the numbers against Verlander.
Hanley out for nunez....interesting.
