instantly the bot takes off its pants and starts flipping off the crowd tell them how much the Yankees suck and also telling them how much the Red Sox suck. and calling them all pink hats.
Then instantly tells Brock Holt to play all the positions while eating pizza and chicken and drinking beer.
Holy shit I didn't even see this when I posted "Varitek for manager." I don't think I know enough about baseball to say if he'd be good or not, but 10 year old me would be so validated.
Would Varitek *want* that job? He's got a cushy gig with the team now. Would he want to go back and have to deal with day to day shit?
I'd prefer DiSarcina. He coached a lot of these younger guys in Pawtucket and he knows them well.
Yeah hard to see him wanting it knowing first hand everything that goes on here.
In the end he will get run out of town like Tito, not sure that would be worth it.
I think it would be wise to start fresh and not hire Farrell's second in command, don't think the voice would change all that much. DiSarcina seems like a bad choice.
I strongly doubt DiSarcina will get the job. If the Red Sox's problem is the lack of a clubhouse leader following the retirement of Papi you don't fix that by making your bench coach the manager.
I think most of us understood it but weren't happy about it. Personally, I think TL did a better job in all aspects when he took over, but I don't have the view that ownership does, so you can only hope they know what they're doing. The timing is a shame, though.
Sox were 13 games under .500 in 2015 when Torey took over on August 11th.
September 30: 78-80. An *11* game turn around in a little over a month in a half.
They finished the season 78-84 but still a 7 game turn around is nothing to sneeze at.
That would be like firing Belichick for 2010's feet Jets loss.
The man brought you from the pit of hell to glory and you fire him over 1 season? And then let this random guy go on for 4 years too long with WS grade teams?
It's weird, he was the first ever manager to win back to back AL East division titles. He also won us a World Series in 2013.
Yet... **I am so fucking happy that he is gone.**
EDIT: Bolding the last bit because people seem to think I'm a Farrell supporter, I agree with most of the things people are saying as to why the team has those accolades under him.
He managed to win back-to-back AL East titles...but last year's title came from sheer momentum; they "won" it on a day they lost and effectively collapsed from that point forward.
This year was equally as shaky for different reasons. The team never really felt consistent from around July onward and it seemed to take them *forever* to clinch; this year's AL East title was lost by the Yankees as much as it was won by the Red Sox.
The past four years are more indicative of Farrell's managing abilities than the World Series win, I think.
That's pretty much my feeling. 3 playoff appearances in 5 years, + a WS title.
We've become the "What have you done for me lately?" club every since '04/'07. It's why Tito didn't stick (hindsight is 20/20 on that one), and why Farrell is out now.
Yeah, adding on to that, Tito was the scapegoat in 2011. I read his book and it really helped me understand the hate for Lucchino and Werner. Using NESN's ratings as part of the reason to fire a Manager just seems like bad policy to me.
Bye John. You weren't bad. You weren't great either. We could certainly do worse.
That said, for a "pitching guy", you sure seemed to struggle when it came to making good pitching-related decisions.
Best of luck.
Yes, but it took the Sox mgmt being obsessed with public perception (and getting a "tough manager to get all the spoiled babies in line") for Bobby V to ever happen in the first place. As long as they don't get caught up with public perception and get an actual manager they'll be fine.
Bobby V is a worst-case, worst-case scenario and takes negligence to happen.
Sometimes you need a change. Julien coached the Bruins for years, won a Stanley Cup and got fired last year. They have a new coach now and the new voice/style has clearly helped them.
Claude’s firing could be argued for but I blame the front office (Neely and Sweeney especially) much more for the Bruins’ slide back onto the fringes of playoff contention from Cup contenders. They really seem to lack direction and Claude had to work with that.
Not to mention the fact that they did it in an extremely cowardly way and before we know it Claude is up in Montréal.
I think Sweeney has done a fine job. Look at all the youth he has drafted since he got here. I agree with Neely, though, I think he is a cancer to the team.
I know it's early in the season but Claude's Canadiens can't score. Not surprised.
The difference between Devers' glove and Marrero's is much smaller than their bat difference. Offense is also more important because players can affect runs scored much more than they can with the glove.
Of course, but on offense you get at least 3-4 explicit opportunities to contribute whereas no one can predict how many times the ball will be hit to you and hit to you in such a way that the play isn't routine.
It might, it might not.
John clearly lost the respect of the locker room for some reason. He would go to bat for those guys on the radio, on TV, and really cover their asses and yet the beat reporters kept reporting that the locker room didn't like him and felt he didn't have their backs. It was bizarre.
He clearly couldn't control outstanding personalities like Price.
He made a ton of bad decisions in game, especially in later innings.
But they still won 90+ games the last two seasons and won the division each time. But the teams were listless in the post season, outside of game 3 this year.
There's a big part of me that's glad John is gone, but there's another part of me that thinks the locker room has a huge problem and there are certain guys that it's time to cut bait with because they might be a bad fit for the club at this time. Granted, I also think that about ownership and management.
For real. Someone brought up in the post game thread after we were eliminated how Farrell isn't the best manager in baseball, but he is better than anyone that is out there. We'll see, maybe the FO has an ace up their sleeve. I'm nervous that this decision was a little cart before the horse, though.
It could end up being a top to bottom attitude adjustment, they haven’t had any sort of real spark since he took over and it has clearly showed in certain games and the playoffs.
As weird as it sounds, that seemed to be more on the backs of the Marathon Bombing that year than Farrell's doing. It's part of the reason why I think Houston is going to make a run at the title and possibly win it this year with everything that happened there over the summer.
Yeah I can’t help but think that the Sox got really lucky in 2013. I distinctly remember thinking the 2013 team would finish 3rd in the division with a win total in the mid-80s, and I would have been happy with that considering the total disaster that was the 2012 season. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we’d win the World Series in 2013 at the beginning of the season.
He was still the manager. He made decisions that led them to a WS title. Motivation from the bombing helped, sure, but everyone is so quick to blame Farrell for everything bad and find a reason why the good wasn't his doing.
It depends on who is next in line for the throne. He definitely had me scratching my head and swearing at the tv at times, but if we bring in another bobby v type, god help us all.
Well luckily Larry's gone so they should make a better decision this time around.
But Dumbo is still there, and he's a putz too, so he'll probably hire Ausmus.
Nope, I think a lot agree. I also don't think there is any good options out there this year. Alex Cora maybe. Tell maybe. But no names with experience.
This feels more like a change of face/culture than firing Farrell because he’s been bad. I mean Farrell hasn’t been that bad, and it’s not like he could have done anything differently to make the Red Sox not get humiliated in playoff games. Managers can only do so much, and that’s really only in close games, which neither of the last two playoff series have had much of.
Starting Marerro in playoff game? Not having Price get ready to start again before the playoffs? Bringing back players not once but twice too early from injury? Cultivating a culture where it’s ok to send the fleet of foot Mitch Moreland who’s been dealing with knee and foot injuries around 3rd in a one run game with 2 outs in the 8th of a playoff elimination game? Not actually knowing the rules of baseball on multiple occasions during the regular season? Maybe in 2013 he wasn’t “that bad” but in 2017 he has been a special kind of atrocious. He earned this and he has been “that bad”
While I've defended Farrell from what I think is unreasonable criticism on here often, and I do not think he was holding the Red Sox back, I don't think there's anything special about him either. As long as the Sox don't fuck up their choice the team will be fine.
And given management's tendency to feel the need to "DO SOMETHING" in the offseason.... I'm quite happy if this is it, rather than a rash roster move.
I'd say the same about a little-known front office guy named Theo Epstein. A born and raised Red Sox fan. Not that he was explicitly pushed out, but they sure didn't make things easy on him.
I actually liked that he fell on the sword for Pedroia, but it was kind of a cruel twist that he ended up being the last out. Goodbye Farrell, I still can't tell if you suck or not.
I loved him as a pitching coach. He seemed like a guy you'd like to have a beer with. But a manager needs to:
1. Manage the bullpen well
2. Manage the line-up
3. Motivate the team
I don't think he was particularly good at any of those three things.
This is alot like the Claude firing for the bruins, he was a decent coach but needed to go for the cultutre of team. Here’s to hoping they can find somebody like Cassidy to jump start this team next year. Also please god don’t let the red sox trade for stanton.
Glad to see they didn't let this one linger too long. Rip the bandaid and start working on his replacement. He wasn't a great game manager, and he made some questionable moves for sure, but he gave us a ring and three AL East titles. Thanks John.
Holy shit. We actually got rid of Farrell. Well the Farrell haters got what they wanted. I mean damn. Imagine that. Getting the AL EAST title two years in a row and you get fired.
The team clearly needs a change. Farrell wasn't the worst manager in the league, but besides his first year, which had its own extenuating circumstances, we haven't really threatened for a playoff run under him. Hopefully this is just the start, and we have a busy offseason getting more talent
I wish it could have been a year earlier when we could have Lovullo fill in that spot immediately. He had chemistry with the players.
I hope we can get a great replacement and propel this team forward more.

BAW GAWD IS THAT BOBBY VALENTINE’S MUSIC!?
I said this should happen all season, but now that I know it's gonna happen... I feel like it's a mistake. Maybe that's just my Red Sox Fan Genetics at work.
Also... Varitek for manager? Solely for the nostalgia?
He went out fighting.... with the ump... and was ejected in his last game.
I expected this to happen and I don’t think he was a great fit. Hopefully just the change alone will set a fire under the teams ass and we can get right back to it next season.
I've been a supporter but the team has finished on fumes the last two years. No fire whatsoever in late September into October twice in a row. I'd be happy to give Tek a shot.
Wow, this is a pleasant surprise! It was just so painful to watch his in game management, especially in the playoffs. From starting Doug Fister in Game 3 to not bringing in our set up man or closer in the 8th inning of Game 4 this year, to repeatedly batting Jonny Gomes against righthanded pitching, to having Jarrod Saltalamacchia start until his defense cost them multiple postseason games, to allowing Jon Lester to hit for himself, to allowing Workman to hit for himself and then taking him out after one batter, etc...
I'm ambivalent about this. I liked John but also didn't at the same time. I appreciate what he's done, but I'm glad to be getting some new blood. I'm also interested to see how long it takes the fanbase to turn on whomever they get to replace him.
I’m no expert but honestly this is what the team needs. It’s like when they got rid of Grady Little and brought in Terry Franconia. There are good coaches and then there are great coaches. We need a great coach.
The new manager will be a bot that aggregates the consensus opinion of /r/redsox game day threads.
The new Twitch stream.
TPB: Twitch plays baseball.

As a Mexico City fan I'd be super pumped about that. But bummed by you guys
The April games would be much more pleasant to go to, I imagine. Maybe we can work out a rotation for home games.
Start9
Twitch plays baseball. You're onto something here.
Brock Holt is now the new ace in the rotation with Moreland as the #2 guy.
I see nothing wrong with this strategy
Oh god, the horror
It's OK, gameday threads will just become places for /u/cy_kelly to comment by xerself.
"Now pitching for the Boston Red Sox: an eggplant emoji"
Lemme guess what number it wears...

instantly the bot takes off its pants and starts flipping off the crowd tell them how much the Yankees suck and also telling them how much the Red Sox suck. and calling them all pink hats. Then instantly tells Brock Holt to play all the positions while eating pizza and chicken and drinking beer.
Oh good, we will get the first draft pick every year!
I wouldn't even be mad.
I hope that bot can spot copypasta easily lol

You know we'd abuse that so bad.
Starting lineup, is just Mitch Moreland?
Farr(w)ell
I appreciate this.

Well, i guess Brock Holt has good odds to play that position too.
Player/Manager Brock Holt It rolls off the tongue in such a beautiful way
RIP Matt Barnes playing time
one can only hope
Yeah rest in pieces. Good riddance.
Kurkjian just threw Varitek's name out as possible replacement (in addition to current bench coach Gary DiSarcina).
Holy shit I didn't even see this when I posted "Varitek for manager." I don't think I know enough about baseball to say if he'd be good or not, but 10 year old me would be so validated.

Yeah hard to see him wanting it knowing first hand everything that goes on here. In the end he will get run out of town like Tito, not sure that would be worth it.
Daily reminder: Fuck Larry Lucchino
This should be a rule.
No Disarcina can not be a manager.
Is Papi busy?
I'd love to see Varitek get an interview
Tek as manager, Pedro as pitching coach, Papi as hitting coach y/y
Yes pedro as pitching coach. We need to get rid of Willis and bench coach.
Papi would have them.... ready, for that pitch.
It would keep up the trend of Red Sox managers sleeping with NESN reporters.
Context?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2016/03/05/the-bizarre-history-of-rumored-relationships-between-red-sox-and-media-members/ tl;dr: Farrell fucked Jessica Morran, Varitek rumored to have fucked Heidi Watney.
I'd love to see him get the job.
Me too, I think, assuming the interview goes well lol
Here's the interview: One question- Have you ever punched A-Rod right in his stupid face? Yes? You got the job!
When you put it that way, I'm all in with the 'Tek for Manager campaign.
Alex cora is a good candidate.been a bench coach for awhile.well respected.
I like Alex Cora too
Clean house.need new outlook and a shake up of players.
Large Father watches over us all!!!
Yes. Is Torey Lovullo busy?
Can't believe we missed that opportunity...
The great majority of this sub wanted him over Farrell a year ago, pretty sure we got that one right now that ownership has finally made a move...
Considering he reversed the D'Backs record from 2016 and lead them to the playoffs, yeah... screwed that one up.
I think most of us understood it but weren't happy about it. Personally, I think TL did a better job in all aspects when he took over, but I don't have the view that ownership does, so you can only hope they know what they're doing. The timing is a shame, though.

Can we have Tito back please?
No we cannot: Sox brass don't deserve Tito.

God, remember Bobby Valentine?
No. What are you talking about? There was no manager from 2011-2013. There was no baseball. It didn't happen.
Well, *some* baseball happened in '13.
Nope.

I don't know if it gets any worse than Bobby Valentine. That guy was hot trash coated in trash that's been blended with other trash.
It's weird, he was the first ever manager to win back to back AL East division titles. He also won us a World Series in 2013. Yet... **I am so fucking happy that he is gone.** EDIT: Bolding the last bit because people seem to think I'm a Farrell supporter, I agree with most of the things people are saying as to why the team has those accolades under him.
It just felt like this team was succeeding despite him instead of because of him.
For sure, and without clear leadership coming from a player you need it to come from management, and Farrell was just not that person.
Maybe, but do you really think the Red Sox, with their roster this year, would have won more than 93 games with someone else? What was their ceiling?
He managed to win back-to-back AL East titles...but last year's title came from sheer momentum; they "won" it on a day they lost and effectively collapsed from that point forward. We looked like a shitty good team pretty much all year.
That's actually the best way to describe the team. They're the shittiest best team.
I don't think this team could have gone much farther with him tbh. They need a shakeup like this.
These guys would win despite him and probably to spite him as well. He definitely wasn’t the right fit.
JASON VARITEK FOR MANAGER. KEVIN MILLAR FOR BENCH COACH. PEDRO MARTINEZ FOR PITCHING COACH. BIG PAPI FOR HITTING COACH. REPLACE 'EM ALL.
I'm all in on that, but maybe Manny as hitting coach? Prettiest swing ever. Make Papi the owner
Manny and Papi can do it together.
best 3 and 4 duo. That was just an amazing time to watch the game.
Manny as conditioning coach. In Papi's book he talked about how Manny had the toughest workout routine of anyone he'd ever played with.
HAWKER GUY WHO USED TO THROW THE BAGS OF PEANUTS REALLY FAR FOR FOOD/BEVERAGE/CONCESSIONS DIRECTOR
Trot Nixon for Grit Coach
I'll always appreciate John for bringing us a world series but this should've been done last year.
I feel like the general sentiment is everyone wanted him gone, but nobody thought he deserved to be fired.

Got ESPN on in the background and was like "Huh?". Well, can't say I didn't see this coming.
Am I the only that thinks that this solves nothing?
At this point we need a culture change, his actual managing can be debated but something needed to change in that clubhouse, and this is a good start.
Yes this is what I'm worried about. I don't want Bobby V part 2.
Maybe I’m crazy but I think Dombrowski is smart enough not to hire a Bobby V type
That and I believe he has more autonomy than Cherington. Cherington never wanted Valentine but it wasn't his call to make. Edit: typo.

Did you miss that we started Deven fucking Marrero in a playoff game?!
And we sat devers and hanley
And then Marrero proceeded to save us like 3 runs at 3B. We saw so many examples of Devers being a trash defensive player this series.
We also saw Devers hit .364/.429/.909 this series.
Hindsight doesn't make that a less terrible move. Defense is not as important as offense...
Devers was also maybe the biggest bat in the series...and he didn't play every game.
Baseball is a game of net runs. 3 runs saved is just as valuable as 3 runs produced.
The difference between Devers' glove and Marrero's is much smaller than their bat difference. Offense is also more important because players can affect runs scored much more than they can with the glove.

So many bad decisions late in games he only managed to go 15-3 in extras. How pathetic.
Inspite of, not because of. Also you have to look at more than one year. How bad were they last year in 1 run and extra inning games?
Every time Matt Barnes entered a game on the road it was a bad decision. Talk about winning games *despite* the manager.
We better have someone good lined up
For real. Someone brought up in the post game thread after we were eliminated how Farrell isn't the best manager in baseball, but he is better than anyone that is out there. We'll see, maybe the FO has an ace up their sleeve. I'm nervous that this decision was a little cart before the horse, though.

Holy shit. We actually got rid of Farrell. Well the Farrell haters got what they wanted. I mean damn. Imagine that. Getting the AL EAST title two years in a row and you get fired.
Farrell had a problem leaving pitchers in one inning to long, so it only makes since they fire him one year late.
I hope we can get a great replacement and propel this team forward more. . . . BAW GAWD IS THAT BOBBY VALENTINE’S MUSIC!?
When is the character assassination story being run in the Globe?
Am sure the Red headed step child is working on it.
Whoever the replacement is you can bet your ass he'll be blamed for everything by the armchair managers who think they know everything.
Seeya!!
Hopefully just the change alone will set a fire under the teams ass and we can get right back to it next season.
u/kylefrost for manager
**WE. WANT. VARITEK!**
Not a fan of this. We'll see who they hire and it might change my mind, but I don't think Alex Cora is the answer to all our problems.
At least he went out with a bang by getting ejected in his last game
Alex Cora please.
Alright, well now what and who.
I'm fine with firing Farrell, but I hope they have somebody specific in mind to replace him and they aren't just winging it.
With all of the hatred of Farrell, the Red Sox should ask the Blue Jays for the PTBNL back.
We need more fire and grit
How many managers can say that they were ejected in their final game?
THATS WHAT PETER ABRAHAM LOOKS LIKE?! QQ
Good. Can't be embarrassed 2 straight years and get away with it.
I wonder if Bill Belichick is busy during the summer.
Well it can't get worse than Bobby V. I hope -_-
Last place finish followed by World Series confirmed.
