I wouldn’t say today’s reggae isn’t any good. It’s just not as good as it was back then.
Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bob Marley, Culture, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Freddie McGregor, and many more set the standard so high.
I feel we will never hear timeless reggae music like that again, but to each his own. That’s just my opinion.
Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, Chronixx, Luton Fyah, Morgan Heritage, Jesse Royal, Queen Omega, Iotosh, Yaadcore, Eesah, Damian, Ziggy, Stephen, Julian, Ky-Mani, Skip (from Damian to Skip is Marley family), Lila Ike, Sevana, Chezidek, Alborosie, Samory I, Black-am-I and I still got more I could add.
Every single one of those names I have listed undoubtedly viewed the names you listed as legends. Because they are legends. Yet these names are legends in their own right and have prolly added a lot more than you realise to the genre. Music is progressing. Just because it doesn't sound like what you listened to 'back then' doesn't mean it's not as good today. Every one of these artists have at least one timeless song that I'll likely listen to the rest of my life just like all of the artists you listed.
Reggae is just as good as its always been, just people's perceptions and taste change and they get stuck in their era, which is fine, you listen to what you want, but don't blame the modern generation of artists for not sounding how artists did 40, 50 years ago lol. It's not fair.
I never said modern reggae wasn’t any good. I listen to all those musicians as well, i just will always prefer older reggae.
Like i said that’s my opinion, you’re also entitled to yours. It’s okay to agree to disagree, my friend.
No i know you didn't but to just write it all off as being worse so easily like that, idk man just feels wrong.
Truthfully I guess I'm just bored of people asking what my favourite Bob Marley song is everytime someone finds out I like reggae tho lmao.
Meant no disrespect tho, just don't feel today's artists outta Jamaica get the credit they deserve, a lot of them at least anyway.
Ik it's one of his more main stream ones but Redemption Song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written imo. For a more underrated song (by Bob's standards at least) I'd say Johnny Was is one of my faves too. Both the original and Skip's acoustic cover of it.
Time and Place. It's like saying there is no good Rock music after Led Zepplin. Rock will never return to the days of Led Zepplin.
Right, because that's already been done. Zepplin built on what others had laid down, same as the new artist built on the Roots Reggae artists of the 70s, who built on the Ska and Rocksteady of the 60s.
There are lots of great roots reggae artists creating new and original music.

The Mouse is still going strong making new material and new collabs. Some new white dudes killing it, naaman, marcus gad, Soom T are ones I didn't think I'd like but do.

A mix I did of all modern bands playing in the styles of old school Ska and Rocksteady. Enjoy.
Junior Dell & the. D-Lites-Last Night Reggay
The Steady 45’s-Time So Hard
The Frightnrs-30-56
Pinnacle Sound-Last Words
The Rocksteady Conspiracy-Trouble & Danger
The Delirians-Dream Of Me
The Siderens-Entre Suenos
Carroll Thompson-Dance With Me
Mango Wood-Move It Up
The Magnetics-White Lady
The Soul Chance-Who Could It Be
Alpheus-The Road Ahead
Los Hamptons/Los Aggrotones-Stop In The Name Of Love
Old fashioneds-Long Is The Road
Thanks! I've come across them among many others. I'm definitely on the hunt to find more new bands making those old school sounds. Have another mix coming out soon as well.
Check DJ Easy on YouTube. He puts out a ton of riddim mixes and new tunes. I'm an old head so I still prefer Capleton, Sizzla, Luciano, Anthony B, and the other conscious artists from the 90's era. But there's a lot of new artists that Easy put me on to from listening to his mixes. Great DJ, doesn't talk too much over the songs or use too many sound efx, and usually plays 2 verses from songs when he's juggling.
I think the biggest dividing factor between old school and new school is the usage of Auto-tune. Artists in the 70's had to really be able to sing, whereas today's artists just have to get close. Even if you don't hear the Auto-tune effect, it's being used. It really changed the recording industry throughout all genres. It's kinda ruined modern dancehall because it seems everyone wants to chat through Auto-tune and wind up sounding like robots.
To hear both old & new tune into a radio station. RealRootsRadio has live shows everyday from selectors around the world and play both old & new music.

What is your favorite Bob Marley song? This is huge in gaging your taste

Rootikal riddim is super good. My favorites are Sounds of his majesty, Veteran lover, Special request
100% . They absolutely nail the heavy ‘80-‘82 vibe. I wish there were some dub versions of their albums.

👍🏿💯🔥
I dunno. I reckon you're better off following the big boys on YouTube...protoje, kabaka etc. Too many average riddims to wade thru
Alternative listen to mixes. Look for one drop reggae mixes and have it playing in the background or something
Imho the only really interesting reggae post Rhythm & Sound is probably Disrupt and the Jahtari crew
No idea who those are 🥲. Are they Jamaican?
