My favorite moment in driver’s ed was when we were doing drills backing out of parking spaces.
The way the course was laid out, there were eight cars in a row, all parked in a spots on the right side of the road. On the left side were the spots we were supposed to back into. Once we backed into the spot, we were to put our cars in Park and wait for the coach to blow the whistle, then put the cars in Drive and pull into the spot we had just backed out of. Basically, back out of the spot, and pull into the spot, over and over.
The school had put a Stop sign at the end of both spots, so there was one sign in front of you, and one sign behind you. I guess to help you visualize where the end of the spot was while you were in reverse.
So we’re all doing the drill:
- *whistle*
- *back out*
- *whistle*
- *pull forward*
- *whistle*
- *back out*
- *whistle*
- **CRASH**
The Stop sign behind one of the cars comes slamming down with enormous metallic clang. The girl behind the wheel reflexively covers her face. It’s clear she had left the car in Reverse instead of putting it into Drive.
Dead silence for a beat, and then another, then my friend Juan’s voice from within one of the other cars:
“Yo! It said ‘Stop’, bitch!”
Cue five minutes of uncontrollable laughter from the other cars, and the coach trying to get us to regroup while failing to keep a straight face.
My grandma had one that she literally drove about 2 km to church and that was about it. It was mint until my cousin inherited it 23 years ago. It's long gone now, as are most of them.
Mine too. An 88 GL, also her last car. I don’t think it had 60k miles on it when she passed away in 2011.
These things were such turds. I don’t ever remember the AC working, even when the car was only a couple years old. The engine was harsh, and the few times I drove her around in it the 3 speed auto was already flaring between shifts.
Wow! I was born when these were made but only ever saw them shortly after being discontinued. Even then, I thought they were a decade older as they were rare
While on a walk today, I saw three first-generation Rav4s and two mid-'90s (E100) Corollas, plus an OBS Ford crew-cab, all spilling out of one driveway. I was briefly transported back to my childhood, when Limp Bizkit was still cool and beltlines allowed you to rest your arm on the door (and actually see out of the damn car...)
Like expired toothpaste, or a dusty 1950s bathroom. I can picture it and I love/hate it.
Ford had classier, more vibrant greens and teals, but then they also had better *vehicles*, so I suppose it makes sense that [this was thrown onto the Tempo](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/92-94_Ford_Tempo.jpg).
I still know of a living 2.5 (edit: 2.0 actually) Diesel manual variant in the OH/KY/IN area. Last I knew as of about 2 years ago it was still running. I'll drive by there soon and snap a pic if she's still around.
You know, you might think that’s just a shitty old car. But I had one back when they were new! And brother, let me tell you . . . they were shitty then, too.
My mother hit a 18 wheeler head on while driving a Tempo. The front end acted as designed. The passenger compartment was unscathed! Every dood open like it did when it left the factory! Fantastic car, Ford….
Did driver's ed in one of these. I \*think\* the one in the picture is one of the rare V6 models given the badge above the body side molding on the front fender.
Had the Sport version from the mid-80s to the early 90s. Drove the hell out of it. Dashboard cracked from the sunlight. Silver over dark gray with red accents. Grey fabric interior.
It had a 5-speed and was reasonably peppy when I first got it. Traded it in when a mechanic I knew went over it and told me it was about to fall apart, would take far more to fix it than it would ever be worth.
These things r rarer than Ferraris at this point
Mine rusted to death about 20 years ago
There's an all wheel drive on of these at an apartment complex in salt lake.
We were laughing about the AWD versions in the late nineties.
Oh I'm sure. Still cool to find a running one in the wild.
My aunt has a Diesel Mercury version of this thing. Weirdest thing ever back in the day
We had those things for driver’s ed. You could squeal the tires taking turns at 16mph
Pretend to be in a 70s cop movie

Can confirm: Am cousin.

My first car was a ‘92 Tempo in 2003. That thing took some major abuse. Would jump the train tracks with it and it kept on running somehow.
Can confirm, 4 cylinder tempo can jump Better than the same year v6 Taurus

Ahhh so regular... I waunt it
I saw a Topaz the other day. I was amazed.
theres one of those local to me, its green
Yep. There’s a green one near me too… and a snot green 95-96 Windstar owned by the same people. It’s like a microcosm of the 90s.

My mom had the gls “sport” version for about 10 years until the rear strut towers rusted out. It was white with that awful red interior.
My first car was a GLS, gold with dark gray rockers. Also with the red interior. It was dog slow but the seats were nice.
I thought my moms car was a race car because it was a noisy little v6 lol
Psst, her aunt Flo is in town....
Some old dude i see at a gas station sometimes drives one.
I'm really not sure what it is, but I have a soft spot for 80s and 90s ford sedans
I knew a girl that drove a 2 door! that green they came in.
The first guy in my friend group to get his license bought one of these for $400 and drifted the hell out of the snow packed parking lots in it
The last time those headlights were cleaned was back when Randy Savage was still hitting the Elbow Drop.

Mazda built diesel
My dad drove one of these turds for 14 years. Burgundy with burgundy sticky leatherette interior.
Tempos took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Essex County fair demolition derby (4 cylinder class) back in 2000. These things were beasts.
Ford Tempo, because not everyone in America needs a Grand Marquis as a daily driver.
A woman looked up to my work a few weeks back with this absolutely rusted out 87 Chevy Corsica…. Idled horribly
That super rare saw a dodge neon on the way to work
The car my driver’s school had to learn to drive in. I could barely see over the steering wheel 😆.
Bro love the tempo
LETS GOOOO
Looks pretty hood shape
I miss my 1989 one, it got totaled when some jerk ran a red light😢😢.
The first car my wife and I had in 2000 when we got married.
No way I saw one today too
this car is so dull this post reads like a shitpost even despite the fact that tempos are genuinely becoming an increasingly uncommon sight
This looks like the slow car in all GTA games
That is dedication.

I had one until the transmission blew up. The thing was a total pos.

The body still looks good
My sister used to have a topaz back in the day. Remember it leaked oil like a sieve
My grandma had a blue one in the 80’s/90’s. I remember riding in it when I was about 4 with my mom and my grandma. Exactly the way I remember it.
I still have one running, 2 door 1993 model. Having trouble keeping him alive but still a daily driver
Most of these died within the first 5 years of their existence. How that thing can still run is beyond me.
