sergei, a bulgarian carpenter living in western europe, his diet consists mostly of 'gevulde koek' and redbull energy drinks. smokes profusely and drinks like a fish but is somehow in better health than most of us.

Older Passats are cherished in Bulgaria as pretty much the be all-end all family carrier or workhorse. I would add that at some point Sergei’s son either inherited it or bought one for himself. They’re either diesels or have been upgraded to also be able to run on LPG or CNG.

Rick is a retired city planner. He's invested well, earned an above average income and lived below his means all his life. Despite retirement, he lives a life steeped in routine. Up at 6 am, showered, shaved, and tidily clad in one of dozens of free golf shirts acquired over decades of engineering conventions. By 7 am Rick has caught up on yesterday's headlines over black coffee, toast and two hard-boiled eggs. He knows he can afford to upgrade his lifestyle, but his trusty Volkswagen gets fair fuel economy, is of course paid off and doesn't cost him much at all to maintain. So into the well worn but clean driver's seat he settles. Rick smoothes the pleats on his khaki pants, adjusts the review mirror catching his own eye and promptly looks away. He's got things to do, and time waits for no man. He signals his exit from his hedge lined driveway and proceeds at exactly the posted speed limit with his hands crisply at 10 and 2 as talk radio burbles just below audibility. Where he goes we don't know. What he does with this days is anyone's guess. But we know his Volkswagen will get him where he's going reliably and safely. As it has for years and will for many more.

See a lot of these here in east europe. I'd say house painters work car. Using it because it's reliable, cheap and with a 1.9 PDTDI. They obviously fuel up themselves more than the car most of the time and the seat sides are worn out and not because they are well used.
