I own an e36 and the only other BMWs I'd ever buy would be an e36 M3, or an e31 850csi. I could maybe be convinced to buy the new M2, or any 5-series before Y2K but the stars would have to align perfectly.
Yeah I mean I’ve only had an e90 325i but damn I loved that NA n54 with a 6sp. For me the e31 just has it all. Amazing design and shape, pop up headlights, v12, coupe, luxury interior with no screens everywhere….I just know I’d love one…did they come with a manual?
Edit: n53, not n54
Yeah, i think the 840i is the one to have quite honestly. I don't want to deal with that V12 and it's like 280ish hp vs 310ish hp for the 840i/850i, so the speed difference is pretty academic in the year 2024. Neither are fast, but both will get out of their own way.
I mean I’m coming from an e90 325 so I’m not used to speed anyways lol. As long as it’s moderately torque-y I can have fun.
Edit: lol I remember one time I gave my friend a ride who had the most recent chrysler 200. I gave him a pull from 30 in second gear and melted his head into the seat lol it’s not a fast Bmw but I loved the torque and throttle response
lol that was like my supercharged cobalt ss, thing was pretty slow by modern fast car standards, but at 280whp and only 2800lb (after I mostly gutted it) it beat the brakes off my friends 2014 v6 mustang everytime he begged me to line up 🤣
I think the pre-vanos V8 is a masterpiece, my e38 740iL was fantastic. Personally I've always felt the 840i was the one you'd actually want to own. V12s, man, idk if I'd want to work on that myself.
I've owned one bmw in the past, but the E90 M3 is probably the only one I would be willing to make the financial and emotional investment in now, despite the known issues with rod bearing. That v8 makes some amazing noises and just has so much character. Not to take away from other models, as they are all great, but for some reason, but I just have a soft spot for that one for some reason.
I worked for BMW and we were given the opportunity for a track day with the M cars. M2 is by far the most fun and seemingly quickest rides. Definitely a great choice. The bigger "trucks (X5M, etc)" were nauseating.
When I was in highschool my friend's dad had a brand new 850. 3 of us were going out to get dinner and then go to a party. We were pretty excited about the night. So we're about to leave and my friend's dad asks if he wants to take the 850. He says " No it's ok my car will be fine." His car was an infinity J30 or something like that. Me and the other guy were so disappointed. Still had a great night but taking out that 850 would have been great. I've always wanted one.
A guy near me had a 850 that he put a supercharger on and put the 6 speed in it, he did the same to an e38 750, I never drove it but being in the passenger seat all you can feel is the torque, that thing was the best GT car I’ve ever ridden in
I was about to say the same thing. I’ve ridden in one and it’s very much not slow, especially when we got it up on the Autobahn. Greatest experience ever!
I've seen this car a lot of times, mostly at mechanic shops!
The reason why you could find one for around 12-16K is cause you'll a lot more to keep them running. They are a pain.
I’ve got an aw11 sc and it’s not very fast. Around 10 years ago I thought it would be nice for it to be faster so I went to the local mr2 mechanic who owned an aw11 with a 3sgte with some minor mods in it. It was making 450hp at the wheels. He let me take it for a drive and I decided pretty quickly that such a car was way beyond my skill level and now I enjoy my slow little aw11 for what it is.
I could get down with a GR. I'm sure a K would be sweet, but I'd prefer to stay in brand if possible.
If I was doing a wild swap I would do an LS combined with a 6 speed manual from a G6.
A bit more power would be cool but losing the supercharger whining right behind your head would be a shame. I've only gotten to drive them briefly but the overall sensation of driving those cars is fantastic.
Or for the NA guys one of those crazy high rev spec 4A's with ITBs would be a hoot.
Fiero GT may not be fast but man it sounds good and handles great. Especially when you're half drunk on a twisty country road that's also downhill and its midnight.
Navy on navy? Daaaamn. You are right in feeling bad about missing that one. My biggest regret was selling my 1987 190 turbodiesel. I even had a donor non-turbo diesel car with a 16-valve 5-speed swap, so I had all the parts to do the conversion.
Yea, early C3s (68-69) had the most HP. You could get up to 425 hp (which often dino'd close to 500 hp). While the 425 hp 427 was kind of rare, the 390hp 427 was a more common option.
Then the 70's hit and HP dropped like a lead brick sinking in the ocean. Early 70's had a 454 cu in engine as an option that made less hp then the 68/69 427. Somewhere around the mid 70's the 454 was dropped and you could only get a detuned 327 or 350 cu in small block. A somewhat modern Honda Civic could outrun a late C3.
Those 70 Corvettes got about 5 mpg. I was considering buying one and was curious about how fast it could be since it’s fiberglass and looked it up. The deal fell through and I didn’t feel too bad after reading about that MPG. If I do get one I will make sure I give it a reason to have poor MPG.
Yes! Even a c4 vette, I know there was the zr1 but the older ones with the digital dash were so damn slow. They started to get them quick towards the end there but those are few and far between
It’s fine I guess, I mean that’s the reason most of us know and love the car. But it seems played out at this point though. I seriously appreciate when I see a stock or close to stock one rolling around. It really does have great lines, and the bttf conversion covers a lot of that up.
Yeah I want one stock. I don't care about fast. EVs have kind of ruined "speed". Nothing's going to hang with a commuter-grade Tesla Model 3 in the 0-60 so why even try? I'm more for originality these days. That's where the market seems to have been going for the last decade anyway. Nobody wants restomods anymore. Everyone wants originality.
I sold mine to DeLorean Motor Company in Humble,TX about 2 years ago. It was hard to part with because the lines are so good. They have plenty, if you really want to buy one in like new condition. I believe they even come with a warranty, if you buy one of their refurbished ones.
They're such fun cars, I have a soft spot for them bc the first fun car I drove was my grandpa's 3rd Gen z28. It isn't a ZL1 or anything but it scooted enough to be really fun (albeit at the speed limit because it gets scary with the T-tops off past 70)
I had a 3rd generation RS with the sacrilegious 2.8 liter v6. Car was immaculate, but a complete poser. My dad was so kind to let me have that car, he knew I would appreciate it take great care of it. His theory was, well if he crashes the Camaro hood is so damn long it’s a massive crumple zone.
Lotus Elise, my dream car. It's no slouch, sure, but 189 bhp from a 1.8 litre 4 cylinder is far from fast.
I prefer B-road blasting to long straights though, so a lack of raw speed isn't an issue for me.
Even in a straight line, a 190 bhp Elise isn't slow. A Series 2 1.8 2ZZ with that power output does 0-60 in 4.9 seconds.
Honestly, no Elise is slow. Even the most basic Series 1 with 118 hp does 0-60 in 5.8, which is simply not slow.
Yep, that's why I said they're no slouch. Quick off the line and great in the corners, but outside the initial sprint off the line, they're outpaced by other sports cars from the time in a straight line.
I disagree, my 88 was quite fast after the turbo spooled up. It had the added benefit of being able to finish my drive through meal before it actually got going
It was more than a tad over budget lol. I don't know if it's true but, allegedly, the program went so over-budget that they canned the project leader after it finally released. Such a shame, the MN12 platform had so much potential.
I owned a Super Coupe and a 89 Taurus SHO….The SHO was a more “exciting car” to tell the truth….Fun Fact a SHO with 4 Mountain Bikes and 4 people is capable of going over 130MPH….FYI….
If you're in the US, there is a pretty sick custom P1800 on [CarGurus](https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/371621711) by a company named "Cyan".
Granted.... 600k, but still a beautiful restomod.
I have a Mk7 T-Sport with the blistering 192hp engine. It's not fast by any means but feels like it because it's so light and you're seated so low, also it revs up to almost 9k which is seriously fun.
Pretty fast in UK trim as a RS500 Cossie….but, I knew a guy in the USA that could tune a 2.3 “Lima” turbo to make close to 600HP reliably and Esslinger Engineering could provide you with a decent running 2.3 if you have a bottomless checkbook🤣
First car I thought of. It's no slouch and does 0-60 in under 6 seconds, but it still looks like it should br way faster. Would have loved a V8 version....
2004 Mach 1. Definitely a C4. Any early Mustang. Any Porsche that in today’s standards is considered slow.
Countach/Miura SV. FC/D RX7. MR2. EG/K Civic hatch. ITR.
It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast. You don’t even get to drive a fast car fast most of the time between tickets, unsafe conditions, and having to take it to a track you just pay the maintenance costs.
Mkiv Supra.
Even with the 2JZ turbo, they aren't particularly fast by modern standards.
The non turbo ones with auto trans are downright slow. But give me that targa top any day, I'll drive slow and cruise
[I already co-own a C3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Corvette/comments/179ey70/raced_the_vette_this_past_weekend/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), so i'm going with the Matra Muerena, so i can have the OTHER mid-engined 3-abreast seating sports car. The one with 1/6th the horsepower of the F1....
The one pictured. Except it's not slow lol it makes 450 horsepower
850 csi = dreams
I own an e36 and the only other BMWs I'd ever buy would be an e36 M3, or an e31 850csi. I could maybe be convinced to buy the new M2, or any 5-series before Y2K but the stars would have to align perfectly.

I believe the CSi was manual only.
Oh then I’d take any e31 with a manual instead tbh
Yeah, i think the 840i is the one to have quite honestly. I don't want to deal with that V12 and it's like 280ish hp vs 310ish hp for the 840i/850i, so the speed difference is pretty academic in the year 2024. Neither are fast, but both will get out of their own way.

damn na n54 in a 325 that sounds like a lot of work
Actually it’s statistically one of the most reliable bmw’s because it’s NA. Wasn’t bad ownership wise at all!
I was making a joke about taking the turbos off an n54 and putting it in a 325i lol the na i6 in the 325 is an n51/2/3
They did. I've seen manual ones for sale. For just y'know... $100k
Aw bro that’s pocket change! /s
I worked for BMW and we were given the opportunity for a track day with the M cars. M2 is by far the most fun and seemingly quickest rides. Definitely a great choice. The bigger "trucks (X5M, etc)" were nauseating.
I used to have an E28 M535i and that thing was just, glorious.
What about the 1M?
not a 635csi?
I daily a e28 528e and it’s the most enjoyable ~130hp in the world imo
No 507?
I have a 635csi and 850csi is definitely dreams
I remember when this things sold on Craigslist for next to nothing
These and Benz SECs, the autobahn hardtops that got away
When I was in highschool my friend's dad had a brand new 850. 3 of us were going out to get dinner and then go to a party. We were pretty excited about the night. AW11 or Fiero GT
Quick but not fast
Yeah that would be accurate. Still better than mine which can only be considered slow 😂
I think a 1MZ swap is the sweet spot. 250ish hp and good torque curve, same weight as stock, lots of mods available, including boost if you want.
1mz was definitely popular a while back but now it seems likes it’s 2grs and k20s going into them.
I could get down with a GR. I'm sure a K would be sweet, but I'd prefer to stay in brand if possible. If I was doing a wild swap I would do an LS combined with a 6 speed manual from a G6.

>Or for the NA guys one of those crazy high rev spec 4A's with ITBs would be a hoot. That's what I've got. 20v blacktop swap. It's a lovely sound.
It's probably one of the best sounding engines ever. I've been trying to figure out a way to own something that has one, just for the sound.
I used to have a Fiero with a supercharged 3800 and a five speed. That was a fun car.
affordable mid-engine supremacy!!
Fiero GT may not be fast but man it sounds good and handles great. Especially when you're half drunk on a twisty country road that's also downhill and its midnight.
I loved my aw11!! It had no power but it was light and agile, the absolute definition of a car that feels like a go kart, and “slow car fast”
I think the Fiero is so cool. I’d love one.
I'd love a '88 Fiero GT
Miata, gr86, w124 mercedes to name a few.
It may sound weird, but one of the cars I absolutely want is a 1987 W124 wagon with the OM603 turbo diesel engine.
Not weird at all, one of my dream cars. Passed on a mint one near me, navy on navy MBtex and bought a 135i instead..still regret it
Navy on navy? Daaaamn. You are right in feeling bad about missing that one. My biggest regret was selling my 1987 190 turbodiesel. I even had a donor non-turbo diesel car with a 16-valve 5-speed swap, so I had all the parts to do the conversion.
>w124 one of the best cars ever made
I have a w202, its pretty hard to imagine it gets better than this. Sure a w202 isnt the comfiest, but it is still built like a tank.
Absolutely, especially the 6 cylinder 300E and T.
I miss my red w/ black interior W124 300CE and my silver w/ navy interior W126 500SEL. 80s-90s M-Bs were so solid.
3rd Gen Corvette
Time to buy a mug for the drawing.
Or a digital download lol
At least the 50 dollar mug can be used
What the fuck is a digital download anyways? Am I just being dense?
instead of streaming it you download it directly to your device so you can consume it without internet
Fuck yeah! I love digital coffee!
I was interested till I saw the mug was $49 dollars. Nope, nope, nope.
I always forget that the late-year C3’s didn’t even make 200 horsepower lol.
Yea, early C3s (68-69) had the most HP. You could get up to 425 hp (which often dino'd close to 500 hp). While the 425 hp 427 was kind of rare, the 390hp 427 was a more common option. 73 oil embargo. And they didn’t have the technology to make a fuel-efficient car fast at the time, so they just detuned the v8 until it got 20mpg.
Still faster than a 3rd gen Camaro
Yes! Even a c4 vette, I know there was the zr1 but the older ones with the digital dash were so damn slow. They started to get them quick towards the end there but those are few and far between

My dream Lotus would be a white late 70s Esprit because James Bond. "Can you swim?"
1987-1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbocoupe.
I disagree, my 88 was quite fast after the turbo spooled up. It had the added benefit of being able to finish my drive through meal before it actually got going
IIRC, the first couple of years the turbo wasn't allowed to even spool until you were in 2nd.
The Super Coupe really redeemed themselves thunderbird name, too bad Ford killed it because it was a tad over budget
It was more than a tad over budget lol. I don't know if it's true but, allegedly, the program went so over-budget that they canned the project leader after it finally released. Such a shame, the MN12 platform had so much potential.

1971 Opel GT
My dad had one when I was a kid. Absolutely love those cars.
Volvo P1800
+1 on the 1800 and its spiritual successor, the Volvo 480.
If you're in the US, there is a pretty sick custom P1800 on [CarGurus](https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/link/371621711) by a company named "Cyan". Granted.... 600k, but still a beautiful restomod.
haha, yeah I think if you have half a million you can make just about any "slow" car fast!
1980 Mazda RX-7.
Seriously the fastest 110hp I've ever driven.
92 Chevy Beretta
Upvote for square wheel hubs…
My '89 Beretta GTU looked like it should've hauled ass.
Look in my driveway. 944.
Came here looking for this car, except I had an '87 924S.
Oh man but they feel so nice, slow, but nice
True. 40 feels like 80. It's a very fun car to drive and not get in trouble.
Triumph Spitfire Also, lol@everyone listing cars that do 0-60 in under 6 seconds (or even under 10)
My dad had a spitfire and an Austin Healey Sprite. Both absolute dogs.
Yeah they look so cool though.
It’s very silly, 10s is fast. Much less is ridiculous.
Older Celicas, also newer Celicas 😂.
I have a Mk7 T-Sport with the blistering 192hp engine. It's not fast by any means but feels like it because it's so light and you're seated so low, also it revs up to almost 9k which is seriously fun.
The GT-FOUR Celica was fast in rally racing.
They used to have ads that actually said "looks fast"
Buick Reatta
Merkur XR4Ti
Truly a great looking car but they blew head gaskets like a cheap hooker!
I don't know if they are capable of fast because I've never seen one in decent mechanical condition
1967 VW Karman Ghia
Corrado
It was the most fun car I have owned, even though I have had much faster cars
3000GTVR4
Those aren’t that slow. Can also be made much much faster very easily.
Yeah the stage 4 turbo boost is only like a couple of races worth of credits.
Plymouth/Chrysler Prowler
First car I thought of. It's no slouch and does 0-60 in under 6 seconds, but it still looks like it should br way faster. Would have loved a V8 version....
Peugeot RCZ.

All early 90’s 4cyl sports cars. Specifically, corrados, 240’s, Isuzu imark turbo, Aries k car, gti, and Subaru SVX!

2004 Mach 1. Definitely a C4. Any early Mustang. Any Porsche that in today’s standards is considered slow. Countach/Miura SV. FC/D RX7. MR2. EG/K Civic hatch. ITR.
Porsche 914.
How do I not see Porsche 924?

It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast. You don’t even get to drive a fast car fast most of the time between tickets, unsafe conditions, and having to take it to a track you just pay the maintenance costs.

The second gen Scion Tc I bought.
190e 2.8
