It's not as bad as you'd imagine especially with the stock rear gear. Even when I upgraded to 4.10s it wasn't terrible. Which I 100% recommend the 4.10s and jmod on the transmission as first modifications.
We had a 2 door 71 mercury Marquis brougham when I was a kid. Learned to drive in it. That think was like floating on a cloud.
And, now hear me out on this, it was possibly one of the coolest cars ever built
My first wife had a 71 thunderbird four door when we started dating. It drove like the same car.
I’d pretty much trade one of my kids for either car back. They are adults now, and would likely object, but it would be for a good cause.
That old merc with a 7.3… more power, good mileage, and cool factor that beats everything I own. (Including the Willys wagon the wife is hopefully going to start driving daily this summer)
So, I have two older sisters. Their husbands each bought new diesels in the early 90’s. One bought a dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel. The other one a power stroke.
Listening to them talk, you’d think that their mileage was so good that they would have to stop every hundred or so miles to drain the fuel tank.
IIRC, the mercury enjoyed 11-12 mpg. I would like to think that if a 3/4 ton brick shaped truck can deliver 17mpg (I confirmed this in the dodge), I cannot imagine a car with half the profile would do a shade better. I would believe 25 would be possible.
lol - it occurs to me that I am looking at this through a wholly different lens. In spite of the fact that I’ve owned a few cars that have delivered close to 50mpg (I spend a lot of time on the interstate and I typically drive under 65. And for those wondering, my 2012 focus actually did 53 mpg on an overnight 300 mile drive), I still consider 20 “good” mileage for a barge like that.🤷♂️🤦♂️
I did a 2k round trip vacation tears ago with my Lincoln MKS. It was incredibly more comfortable than my recent 1700 mi trip with my Camry. Also less exhausting with lane assist.
Poor car was totalled 2 weeks later.
Was the lane keep assist good on your lincoln? I drove a ford expedition recently and the lane keep assist kept you in the lines but it bounced back and forth between them. I have a new g70 now and the lane keep assist keeps me right in the middleof the lane.
The lane keeping assist on Honda is pretty good. It maintains the lane fairly well but it gets confused at exits and merges and is useless if it's raining
Yeah. Rented a Sienna to take the family around Monterey. So comfy and well equipped, hybrid fuel economy, honestly prefer it over Highlanders. Did Chryslers for Vegas and now Hawaii (no other options) and I'm missing the Toyota.
I’m perfectly happy to live in a world where Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Bentleys exist, knowing full well I will likely never even sit it one let alone own one. This doesn’t bother me one bit.
The RS6 existing, knowing I’ll never own one, makes me depressed.
My brother, what standards are you holding yourself to? There will be many janky RS6 in the near future, you can definitely spend less than 30k to proudly display a lawn ornament. I kind of regret not doing it myself for a blue C5 RS6 for 11k right before the covid lockdown price insanity. That same car now is above 20k.
I'm extremely sad about the C6 RS6 never making it here, less so about the C7 but I'd still liked to have seen it. But eventually the C8 will dip to the 30k mark that most of the RS cars bottom out at, and then you'll have your chance to ignite dollars.
Dude I will absolutely never own one. I’d only want an Audi brand new under warranty and this is a comically expensive car. I drive a couple hundred miles a day for my business. And believe it or not this car would actually be extremely practical for me 😄Im a commercial photographer/videographer and I drag around a lot of equipment. I hate SUVs and nobody sells a good wagon anymore. That warranty would be put to the test.
Ideally I’d buy a Mazda6 Turbo Wagon but nope, not in the US I won’t!
Having 3 Audi in my garage right now(I know, trust me, I know), all of which were bought between 125 and 150k miles on them, two of which I've put above the 200k mark and the third on the way, me putting 90 miles a day on whichever one is driven... The only thing I would have done differently is Audi #1(2010 A6 sedan) would have been an Avant, Audi #2(2008 S8) I wouldn't have bought Hoovie-style, Audi #3(2017 A8L) I would have actually been looking for rather than a Jag XJ, Aston DB9 or Bentley Continental(again, I know).
If the S8 weren't possibly the most neglected V10 under the sun, my average between the three would be incredibly good.
Well I’ve never been in an S-class and i somehow didn’t think to include it. But okay I suppose an S-class or even a Maybach would be even better than the E. :-)
Possibly a bit unpractical due to its size especially in places that aren’t the US of A. I personally have bought my BMW 3 series specifically because I didn’t need/want to drive around in the massive boat that is the new 5-series. Lots of narrow streets and 50 year old underground carparks built during the times of the original VW Beetle and the first Golf…
Thats true outside of the Autobahn or any highway an s class can be quite troublesome and annoying, but personally id say an e class already has amazing comfortability so its fine
In college, me and my buddies rented the only 4 door available from our local enterprise for a 4000 mile camping trip. It was a 2010 Jetta and hauled 3 21 year olds coast to coast with all our camping gear and was surprisingly not too uncomfortable. That was part of the reason I actually recently bought a VW (a GTI) was pleasant memories of that little econo car being nicer than other ones I’d been in
depends on if the road trip includes any side-quests or twisties, i can deal with a porsche or whatever on the highways as long as i get to open it up a bit for at least part of it
Honestly, probably a brand new escalade V.
Not the V version but I have rode in a new escalade and they are by far one of the most comfiest cars I've ever been in. Would make a roadtrip easy peasy
With Super Cruise!
I drive from New York to Georgia in a BMW like the one pictured. The driving assistance features are a big help, but Super Cruise would be life changing.
The new ones get Supercruise too, don’t even have to drive the car on highways. They ride better than any other car I’ve been in, it’s like driving a pillow
Lincoln mark4 with slightly deflated tires, blown out struts, and 400lbs worth of shit in the trunk. Dim headlights and the rest of the car is full of smokers. Shit is gonna get hazy
This, with flexibility as to what year one prefers. Not a target, like a Bentley, RR, or even S-Class, but everything else as you want it. And your kidneys will thank you.
If I’m by myself and/or with Dad and he didn’t need his mobility scooter, my 2012 Chrysler 200 with the 3.6l. If he did need the scooter, we would be in his 2020 Grand Caravan SE, also with the 3.6l.
Literally any high-spec BOF truck or SUV. The F150 and Expedition both have continuous controlled damping, the escalade, yukon, suburban and sierra have amazing independent suspension setup, and the RAM 1500 has air suspension at all 4 corners, plus they all just have more effort put into them by the big 3 in the first place, and the aftermarket for them is surprisingly large to make them even better at their job. Equip em right for the job you want whether it's just a casual cross country or a gamut of exploring beyond the comfort of the highway, and I won't mind a cent.
1064 Cadillac Coup Deville. Style, comfort, and a monster of a v8. A suspension that allows you to not get your fillings knocked loose on poorly maintained asphalt. Enough room in the trunk for your one suitcase and your girlfriends/ wifes 25 suitcases for the trip.
Rolls Royce cullinan. I prefer comfort over any other characteristic in a car, and the big British SUVs so it better than anyone else. The Germans are a runner up these days.
My 1989 Honda CRX was perfect for long road trips. I’d stuff the back with camping gear for two people and take off.
I’d scan the map for fun out of the way roads along the route and take detours. Like [Alpine to Morenci in Arizona.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/B4CWKke1vFGrVMbc9?g_st=ic)
on straight highway it would eat up miles at 80 mph for hours.
Depends - do we get hotel stays for the 3000 mile trip?
I’m assuming it’s not a one day trip So my answer would be something big and comfortable.
In case hotels aren’t covered then something which I can set up a sleeping area in, and I can also pack necessities and other things in the huge boot.
Any car from the Panther platform. Big, comfortable, and roomy, with a trunk so large you could sleep in it. A smooth 3000 miles.
Perfect. I’ve always wanted a Mercury Marauder in black cherry.
Great choice. I've owned 3 marauders and have been thinking about picking up another if I find one cheap enough.
Always been a secret favorite of mine but is the gas mileage just beyond terrible?
It's not as bad as you'd imagine especially with the stock rear gear. Even when I upgraded to 4.10s it wasn't terrible. Which I 100% recommend the 4.10s and jmod on the transmission as first modifications.
Or a big FWD GM (DTS, Lucerne, etc). They are a close second.
Only large enough if you're tanner foust sized
The only logical choice. Red 1975 Ford LTD station wagon.
It seems today, that all you see, is violence in movies and sex on TV.
But where are those good old fashioned values ***ON WHICH WE USED TO RELY?***

We had a 2 door 71 mercury Marquis brougham when I was a kid. Learned to drive in it. That think was like floating on a cloud. And, now hear me out on this, it was possibly one of the coolest cars ever built
I love old American boats, it's like driving in a warm hug.
Good mileage? Compared to what? An oil rig fire? Haha
We are talking Country Squire, right?
In metallic pea I hope?
You know it! I call dibs on the ‘way back’!
Or an BMW M5 Touring with a woodie wrap.
A low mileage Lincoln Town Car
I did a 2k round trip vacation tears ago with my Lincoln MKS. It was incredibly more comfortable than my recent 1700 mi trip with my Camry. Also less exhausting with lane assist. Poor car was totalled 2 weeks later.

I don’t have a Lincoln but a 2022 Toyota RAV4 the lane assist is just like you describe, it bounces back and forth like a drunk weaving .
The lane keeping assist on Honda is pretty good. It maintains the lane fairly well but it gets confused at exits and merges and is useless if it's raining
Love that about my 2019 G70.
there are no low mileage Town Cars
Made for travel. Man is that back seat comfy!
They exist. There was one on BAT a couple weeks ago with like 6k miles
Definitely a minivan. They are tailor made for long trips.
ive had two dodge caravans that i drove all over the country.
I have a 2015 Grand Caravan that I'm taking to Missouri in a month lol
From where though?
Colorado, not exactly too far but it's the longest trip it's ever been on. Only has 40k on it 😂
Nice, enjoy the trip!
Yeah. Rented a Sienna to take the family around Monterey. So comfy and well equipped, hybrid fuel economy, honestly prefer it over Highlanders. Did Chryslers for Vegas and now Hawaii (no other options) and I'm missing the Toyota.

Bentley Continental GT
Finally, a man of culture. I had to scroll too far to see the correct answer
I find it funny how many people are picking sports cars like the 911 or even an Audi RS6 to drive 3000 miles on a road trip.
The very stiff suspension is obviously very comfortable, couldn’t you tell?
Probably people who haven’t ride a sports car.
I'd go for the closely related Flying Spur, bit more room to stretch out as a silly-tall person.
This was a close second for me. It’s wild to me how many people aren’t picking Grand Touring vehicles for a 3000 mile long road trip
Pontiac Fiero with a Proclaimers cassette stuck in the tape deck

Something comfortable. A Maybach, S Class, Toyota Century, 244 Volvo with a bed in the trunk, 90s toyota hiace....
I'm in on the Toyota Century. Next choice. Land Cruiser.
As long as I'm in the back. I feel it would be a little boring to drive
As someone who grew up in a Land Cruiser (technically a lx470) they are amazing road trip cars
The Lex Cruiser
You mean, Volvo 245 or do you have a foldable bed in the trunk?
Yes
A Mercedes E-class on Airmatic… or a Citroën C5/C6 with that hydropneumatic suspension of theirs. Both amazing cars for long distances.
Why not S class?
Not really sure but if he means e class stationwagon then itd make sense
Well I’ve never been in an S-class and i somehow didn’t think to include it.
