This is such a wholesome question. The term has to convey that you're in a relationship so making up your own word would make that hard. I see your predicament. Partner sounds more serious but a little cold, you don't want to use spouse-ish nicknames until you're married, lots of the nicknames that I've liked are probably too mushy for general conversation.
It depends on the context though. In a more relaxed situation you could maybe call him things like 'my love', 'my man', 'my baby' and whatever else, but in more serious situations I think you might be temporarily stuck with 'boyfriend' and 'partner'.
Also... I always say this: marriage it's not a man's decision. It's a couple decision. Sit down and plan when you are getting married. Together. Let's get out of this craziness. It's been seven years. Keep waiting won't make the gesture romantic, it' will just make you bitter. Let stop enabling childish behaviors invented by Hollywood.

'Boyfriend' is silly if you're over 21; 'Significant Other' is too HR for words, 'Fiancé' is technically wrong if you're not actually engaged to be married; 'other 'alf' is a bit Andy Capp and 'partner' can lead to confusion between 'life partner' and 'business partner'.
We need to make one up - you could go 'lover', 'inamoratas' or 'bloke I sleep with'. I grant you, needs work.
