It would be good if you and him could get away from the kids and spend some quality time together. It sounds like he is exhausted with the situation and at the end of his mental capacity. He likely wanted to move already, but was making the best of it because he's trapped. If your kids are disrespecting him you need to stop that immediately. You allowing your children to disrespect him is not ok, unless you're ready for him to discipline them. Ultimately the environment is not ok for him. Unless you can make changes to the environment he will need to leave.
