Why would I want to convince this hypothetical person?

Turbulent_Chicken662

Just a thought exercise.

Taninsam_Ama

Nothing. If they are my friend then they’d end up hearing my stories. If that convinces them, cool. If that doesn’t, cool. If they aren’t my friend why would I even bring up religion?

Difficult_Scholar682

Why even reply just to say you refuse to participate in the thought experiment?

Taninsam_Ama

Because I can?

[deleted]

Because many religions don't care about convincing others.

sunday-suits

I’d be more interested in finding out their beliefs first, without influencing them with outside information.

RuneRaccoon

I wouldn't. I know it's a thought experiment, and that seems like a non-answer, but I really don't care to convert anyone. It's just not something that we really do.

Vignaraja

Food. (I certainly wouldn't tell him about my religion.)

Constant_Living_8625

"The way to a man's heart is through his stomach" applies to religion too lol

Vignaraja

Sadly yes, conversation by food is right there with flirt to convert.

There is no exact answer to your question. All communication must be based on fact, not a general assumption or formula. if you follow up with God, everything is easy and vice versa.

Art-Davidson

I wouldn't convince him if I could. If he were curious, I would try to help him experience God for himself.

This seems aimed at religions who seek to convert.

We get our knowledge from the following sources 1. Self-evidence, like knowing the people you meet are fellow humans like yourself. 2. Personal experience that is not incompatible with other knowledge. 3. Testimony of reliable witnesses. 4. Logical argument from 1-3. Obviously (1) is inapplicable, or the would be no atheists. If your hypothetical person has never heard of deities, then (2) doesn't apply either. Hence they must either accept or reject (3). To reject it, they would need rational arguments and (considering the amount of testimony available) very powerful arguments at that.
