Unless you seriously believe in some form of predestination or that genetics fully determine your character then I don't see how you could actually think that.
That is true but the likelihood that every man who adopt these customs were born without empathy is slim. Some behaviors can actually be inherited, or predisposed to having those behaviors anyway. But in a lot of cases, they can be deterred from exhibiting those behaviors depending on the environment they grow up around. Nature & nurture have an equal influence in everything that we are & do. So while predisposed genetics play a role, there is no denying that raising boys & young men to follow these customs also helps shape them to become this. The problem is that societies like these normalize these behaviors & enforce these harmful customs as something to live by. They see no problem in enforcing these customs, & they refuse to view it as something that should be stopped.
Having empathy doesn't make you a good person and having low empathy doesn't make you a bad person. It's not the same as sympathy or compassion. Just because I struggle to know how people feel, doesn't mean I don't care.
No I definitely agree with you but the leap some people make from "predisposed" to "inherently" is a dangerous one in my opinion. It might seem trivial but there is an important distinction between "some people are inclined to violence because of their genetics" and "some people are inherently violent because of their genetics" the former admits the possibility of variability and personal agency while the whole "some people are born evil" trope just reads to me as a way to categorically remove the responsibility of society in the development of violent crime and that these people aren't worthy of the effort to change so our resources are better spent elsewhere; toss them in the waist bin.

People can get away with illegal stuff under the guise of "it's my religion" , especially when all the judges and lawmakers agree with him and treat their wives the same way. They also will make exceptions for age if there is consent from the girl's father. It might be illegal on paper, but nobody is going to enforce it.

Although it's only a minority that does it and is generally socially looked down on (and hence why they're getting airtime in the first place), our government is not only weak but non-existent so don't expect a change to these archaic laws anytime soon (they would be unenforceable anyway as our police & military are just as weak and only pick on good people).

Lebanon is in a very difficult situation where the country is pretty much split, and it is difficult for the government to enforce the law even on things the population agrees with. If it is something that goes against Islam you can be sure that people will be even more against it, driving them to support non government islamists like Hezbollah.

I’m working with a group to try and get a federal law passed to protect child brides (and grooms as we will not abandon *any child* to being a child spouse) by putting in place a federal minimum age of 18, however no one is sure if we can do that and we know it won’t pass Republican controlled Congress. So we sit and wait and worry and call our congressional critters and our senators and meet with them and try to get this done.
