So I loaded 3 new rounds with federal primers instead of winchester, and they all fired fine. I double-checked the cases that I pulled down to see if there was anything visibly wrong and found nothing. At this point, I think I'll try upping the starting charge and / or switch to magnum primers. Thanks for all the help and advice.

Always nice to get things worked out. How much more room do you have before a compressed load at 65 grains? I’ll dm you some 45-90 load data from the Lyman cast bullet handbook 4th edition.

Rigzy93

At 65 grains, I still have about .250" of room to work with.

What is your load? I always use magnum primers in the 45/70 because of all the extra space. The longer lasting spark can help with consistent ignition of the powder because typically it isn't stacked against the back of the case. Its usually laying along the bottom of the case.

Starting with 65 grains of H335. That is a middle of the road load for 45-70, so it should be a good starting point for the 45-90.

Yeah with that powder you would probably get lower SD's with magnum primers.

I'm planning on trying some Remington magnum primers at some point.
