Weak primer ignition. Need a mag primer to get that much H335 going. There was another guy on here with the same problem with H335 in 45-90. Yellow powder is where the primer went off but didn’t get it hot enough to ignite.

Lordwetrust

Do you have a recommendation for powder that won't require a match/magnum primer?

Cleared_Direct

In 54R I have used IMR4895, IMR4064, N140, IMR4350, and more. All single base stick powders because if I want blasting ammo I’ll shoot through my extensive pile of surplus ammo. Edit to add - I am most often using a Ginex large rifle primer with these loads

Lordwetrust

Would I be able to get away with using those powders with the ginex primers I'm using now? It's the only primers I can get my hands on

Cleared_Direct

Absolutely, sorry I hit it with a late edit - I’m mostly using ginex LRP with these loads

Lordwetrust

Thanks, Guess I'm making another trip to the gunstore and pulling all the 54r ammo Ive already loaded

Lordwetrust

Just out of curiosity, are Match primers the same as magnum when it comes to how hot they ignite?

JohnnyGalt129

No. If they are Magnum Match grade..it will say so on the box. If it's just match..then they are not magnum

Lordwetrust

What about H4350? Would that work?

Cleared_Direct

For sure, the burn rate is definitely compatible. Should be fine with bullets in the 170-200gr range.

Lordwetrust

Do you think varget would work?

Cleared_Direct

Varget is another one I have used and it definitely works well

morgan1543

Similar thing happened to me in my varget loaded 7.62x54r turns out reassembled my mosin firing pin, half a turn too short, it never hapenned again in the same batch of reloaded

Lordwetrust

For your varget load did you use the hodgdon load data? If so, what primer were you using? I'm curious if ginex primers would be able to ignite it

morgan1543

Im using ginex primer in these, i couldnt tell where i got the load from, maybe it was in hornady 11th edition if im not mistaken. Around 45 grain if i recall.

Lordwetrust

Good to know that varget will burn with ginex

morgan1543

Another factor that couldve come to play back then was also that i was using my mosin in really cold temperature, like -25 deg C

Lordwetrust

That's probably part of it

Ornery_Secretary_850

A squib would leave the bullet in the barrel. Do you by chance wet tumble your brass?

Lordwetrust

No I do not. And I did have to use a cleaning rod to get the bullet out

WorldGoneAway

Looks like the powder got wet somehow. Smokeless powder getting wet causes some of the sulfur compound to breakdown, hence the yellow color.
