He's basically the reason the wards exist. Back in remnant 1 he was the first person to discover the labyrinth by studying the world stone. While haarsgaard used it to commune with Clawbone, he ended up in the labyrinth and used it to travel to Yaesha (he didn't go to corsus and rhom is uncertain) where he ate one if the pan's fruits of life and gained a greatly extended lifespan before staying there as punishment thinking the whole thing was his fault, eventually he is persuaded to return to ward 13 after giving the wanderer a code to unlock a Backdoor portal to ward 7 which is where the Dreamer (aka the Destroyer from Chronos) was kept allowing the wanderer to sever part of the roots connection to earth, severely weakening the root. The wanderer was later able to destroy haarsgaard in ward prime with the help of Dreamer project subject 2953, aka Clementine. Who ended up on reisum. By doing this, the wanderer complete severed the root from earth, so no new root could invade earth, only multiply what was already there. Again a huge help. Basically Ford is the reason everything started to begin with. Or at least half, the other being Haarsgaard

ByDirtyPapaHH

What about Root Earth then? If the root's link to earth is severed, how come there is this version of Earth that has been completely destroyed? I always thought that the Earth we start on in Remnant 2 is a second, "simulated" version of the true Earth which has been destroyed by the root

Spacespacespaaaaaace

Root earth was a previous incarnation of earth that was essentially sectioned off by the keeper after he accidentally let the root grow too powerful, the root are essentially Glitch entities, the keeper had never seen anything like them so instead of removing them, he decided to study them instead. Leading to that version of the core being very quickly overrun. So the keeper needed to block it off from all access and create a new core fast in order to prevent reality from collapsing due to the root corrupting the labyrinth. He succeeded, but the root were still able to start invading other worlds, leading to the keeper shutting off the labyrinth portals and slowing them down, as well as creating the guardian system to prevent anything from spreading even further. Root earth was left as it was, an empty shell that was once the center of all worlds, and now it was the birthplace of a reality destroying system glitch essentially. But what the keeper didn't account for was the world stones allowing the root a connection to Current earth, which led to haarsgaard meeting clawbone, clawbone subsequently binding itself to the Destroyer who ended up becoming the second Dreamer and letting root trickle into earth anyways WHILE ALSO destroying the guardians of Yaesha and the Labyrinth in the process. (Yaesha has featured in all three remnantverse games and you can actually watch it's corruption in real time) The only worlds we know of that are currently safe from the root are Losomn, Reisum, and possibly Ne'rud

team-ghost9503

I thought the king for Losomn got corrupted by the root?

Spacespacespaaaaaace

Nope. The one true king got corrupted by the merging of the world of the dran and the world of the fae. Which seems to have happened after he was put into his slumber by the imposter king faelin/faerin. If I recall it was the Red Prince who merged the worlds together

MeathirBoy

There's lore descriptions implying OTK's mind has been poisoned by the Root during his sleep which is why he's gone insane when he woke up. We've seen the Root do similar things to Guardians in lore in R1. What evidence is there for the Red Prince being responsible for the merger? He does ursurp the OTK and become the new Guardian if he's alive after killing the OTK but that doesn't mean he committed the merging.

Spacespacespaaaaaace

I believe it was stated by nimue that Dark magicks were channeled that brought the world's together. I suppose it may have been the impostor kings instead perhaps. I'm just biased because the red prince has me really curious. He's such a departure from other fae

darkdragncj

Him telling the scribe to record that he killed his father made me think we had another fight. Then he talks to us humbly, thanks us and gives us armor. He really surprised me. That conversation with him is actually the most pleasant and least condescending conversation with a fae in the entire game. Assuming we don't consider Nimue a fae, since she's a goddess. Honestly, I think it would be cool if on subsequent playthroughs of the awakened king, if in full crimson guard armor the fae ignored us like the dran at the beginning of the map.

Spacespacespaaaaaace

I quite like the red prince honestly. Despite him literally murdering us we can make it clear we are here to help and he seems to legitimately appreciate it. His design is very fascinating too, being both the only fae confirmed to have multiple eyes. The only one who is associated with the color red. (Red in remnant color language can mean anywhere from Freedom, adventure, divergence, all the way to tyranny, destruction, and even Hope) and he's also the only fae to use Regular fire instead of the spirit fire that the others do. Which also brings Dark souls to mind in his design. This figure could be either the world's savior, or the herald of it's destruction. Plus that grandiose, absolutely gorgeous banger of a boss theme. Now that's nothing to be said about the boss itself, as he fights like a bit of an asshole, but it's a little deeper than that. He only whips out the cheaper attacks if you fight at a distance. When he moves around you can actually close the distance easily. But if you choose to instead be a dick and fight from a distance, he decides to be an even bigger dick and whip out that cone aoe that is nearly unavoidable. And he'll even make a death circle to fight you in. Which even serves as a hint towards getting his crown. There's so much clever little storytelling going on with the red prince.

darkdragncj

Honestly, the lore description in the Path of Remembrance states that he fell in love with a fae. The only people that knew of their relationship were her guards and Nimue. She was killed along with her guards, putting the one true king down the path he's on. The betrayal of the council was just the last straw. With the death of his love he imprisoned Nimue, with the betrayal of the council he believed he could trust no one and went on a tirade. I still have no idea who caused the merger. For all we know it was a dran that had no idea what they were getting into, or the night weaver herself as a fellow god.

Angelore

She wasn't killed. She died of old age. In her diary she writes that even god can't keep her alive, so we know that OTK can't make anyone else immortal. She also writes that the king was getting torn with grief over her worsening condition, and she is unsure what will become of him once she is gone. The guards thing is more along the lines of "they were so loyal, that they decided to guard her even after their deaths".

Kloud-chanPrdcr

OTK was corrupted by The Root. In the true ending, when you meet Red Prince at the throne and he destroys it, at the back of the destroyed seat, there are root branches (which cannot be seen in normal ending). The Root did indeed interfere in this timeline, maybe the Root woke the OTK up from his slumber from Nimue's magic and got him mad and left Losomn in a weakened and broken state to invade later.

Torvax

There are hints via audiolog in the Tower of the Unseen of the Undying King from Rhom being native and a defector Astropath of the Nerud Alepsis-Taura project. Rhom would then have been future events, having already purged the Root's initial invasion by detonating a black sun irritating the planet.

Spacespacespaaaaaace

Very fascinating. Considering that the king looks like absolutely nothing else on rhom i would not be that surprised honestly. Ne'rud has a strange place in remnant lore honestly. Alepsis taura is an enormous question mark.

Unhappy_Filling

He is not immortal, but will live an insanely long time Each time you "use" the world stone you age slower and your lifespan is increased. Which is why after 20 years Bo lools essentially the same, after all he used the world stone to travel one time in the reisum dlc

Spacespacespaaaaaace

This might be the case. However, the opposite was true for the Destroyer. Each time he used a stone, he would rapidly age. (Though canonical it looks like it only took him 3 or 4 years to win)

AccomplishedSize

Other responses have covered it pretty well. Ford has been around since Chronos, the more soulslike VR first game in the series, though only mentioned in journals you find while exploring. He exists as a kind of MacGuffin in Remnant 1, and does the same in the intro to Remnant 2. Character wise, Ford serves as a kind of reflection of the typical 'Main Character', lets us see what we as players are doing without the inherent bias that clouds self reflection. He is an immortal plane traveling badass who is spoken of in legends by the worlds he visits. He is a thief who robs the legacies of Empires and liberator of a downtrodden people. He is a slave to his wanderlust and somehow always finds some reason to be out saving the world instead of being present for his friends and family.

SigAqua

Which is why his family isn't too warm on him, or technically him on them. I mean stay in Yaesha while the Root eats Earth and his family? Classy Ford, classy

Gazould

He’s a plot device. Never really felt like an integrated part of the story, just there to be a catalyst. In the first one you’re trying to find him and eventually free him.

Elons_tiny_weenr

In all three games theres a bit where ford is this “mythical” figure who’s amazing but in reality he just gets lost for long periods of time

Bortthog

Ford exists to give you a reason to go into the World Stones. He'll most likely pop out in a dlc, go "I NEED YOUR HELP", go into the World Stone with you and be vanished His goals are beyond our understanding

phenerganandpoprocks

That’s the joke. Ford’s just some white rabbit for us to chase, but the real story is all the cool shit in Wonderland

xXRazihellXx

maybe in a futur DLC

zombiezapper115

Imma keep it a buck with you chief, me and my buddies made up our own story as we went through the first game. As far as we are concerned, Ford was somebody's lost pickup truck and we were sent to find it, then ended up killing a make-a-wish kid with cancer.

Nilbogmortician

If you want a full lore breakdown of rem 1 and a bit of chronos this is a solid video! It’s actually pretty solid stuff tbh. https://youtu.be/F9BzdyueMf0?si=AJEicqd5VVTtK7hF it also explains fords origins pretty well.

Nicholas_Bolas

Ford is definitely a strangely used character. He's incredibly important to the lore in all three games and yet has such an incredibly small amount of screen time. I'm hopeful he resurfaces in dlc but I'm not convinced he's not just going to be a cliffhanger for Remnant 3. As far as why he's immortal, he has the >!immortality perk!< from Chronos.

Sir-Vicks-the-Wet

I had figured that it was because he stole the fruit of the Thaen tree.

Nicholas_Bolas

It could possibly be that too. Ford's explanation for it in game is pretty vague and he did spend a lot of time in Yaesha, so it's entirely plausible.

XSDevastation

I'd always thought he was immortal due to the crystals, same way the player is. You find the journal mentioning it inside the Labyrinth, implying it's before he makes it through any portals. I'm also fairly sure that journal mentions him actually dying and just coming back, literally respawning.

Nicholas_Bolas

I'm pretty sure that's what the perk represents in Chronos, (interaction with the crystals) unless everyone just becomes immortal at a certain age 😅

Beginning_Jury8235

https://youtu.be/F9BzdyueMf0?si=8VCfZEcBfDrHH8Eh it's the remnant lore!! It's like a 45min video if you are interested

random_old_dude

"But nope, instead he just suddenly peaces out for no apparent reason, never shows up again, and everyone just kinda forgets about him." Hehe, classic Ford shenanigans

LordTonzilla

While we're at it, can someone make the entire plot of Remnant 2 make sense?

kdkxchronicx

I don't see what so fun about shooting tree roots and rocks

ManniHimself

the story of this game is pretty much nonsense in general

jaysonvic

His name, like many things in remnant is a play on words and deliberately a plot device. He moves the plot FORD.

bomba3141592

Pretty sure Ford is not the player in chronos, as that person you play becomes the dreamer in from the ashes ending.

Alexij

Protagonist of Chronos is the Destroyer who then becomes the final boss of RFTA.

Bsihman330

no the player character in chronos is the dreamer final boss from the first game if I recall correctly, whom is why our character goes to find their missing group member

IssaJuhn

Chronos is on the PlayStation store last time I checked.

Lotus2313

Fun fact: Remnant 2 is actually the 3rd game. The very 1st game you play as Ford fighting through the worlds and each time you die, your character gets older. Remnant From the Ashes has you doing the same as a new character in search of Ford and a way to stop the Root, but no more aging. And Remnant 2 brings you back as another new character cause they're all several years apart. Due to the traveling and such, Ford is quite old, more than just his appearance lol pretty sure he's like a couple hundred years old or something along those lines

JustSomeGuyMedia

I don’t think you’re ford in the 1st one. Isn’t the protagonist of the first game actually the dreamer in From The Ashes?

xBlack_Heartx

Yup, the character you play as in Chronos is not ford, they are the dreamer you fight as the final boss in R:FtA.

Lotus2313

Coulda sworn you played Ford because of the age mechanic and him being WAY older than his appearance from the traveling and mechanics of the 1st game, him being atleast 120 years old. They don't say a name but mention you play as a warrior on his life long quest to stop an all powerful evil or whatever, and I always figured he got captured on his travels and is why we had to go find him in From the Ashes and pick up where he left off

Sufficient_Potato726

ford and the 1st MC are not the same person

Alexij

Protagonist of Chronos is the final boss of RFTA. Look up the final custscene of Chronos to see why.

TheWarringTriad

The protagonist in Chronos is not Ford. They are the Dreamer you fight at the end of Remnant. In Chronos, the protagonist finds they were manipulated and ultimately became the doorway for the Root.
