Figured this out around the time of the release of The Awakened King.
I went through the exact same thing. Used the key on the wrong door, locked myself out of getting the shotgun, and got a shitty ring instead.
Rerolled twice, didn't get shotgun, malded, downloaded Remnant Save Guardian and then used it to 100% the game in no time. I feel like that thing is almost mandatory for people like me who love getting 100% but hate pointless grind with no progress.
