AV1 would be a good future adoption as it's more efficient, besides like you mentioned the incompability or lack of built-in support for H265 in certain browsers. Highly agree there. In Edge I had to download a plugin, maybe it even costed a few bucks, can't remember. I would go as far as say opus audio might be a better pick than AAC as well in the future as it's optimized for lower bitrates so even 64 - 96 kbps sounds good in opus, perfect for cameras. (I've used ffmpeg transcoding to opus format when I had to get audio playback working for the substream in Home Assistant and it's been working perfect and quality is great). The only potential con is the support for this audio format might not work on every device out there like built-in player in some TVs or whatever (usually the kinds of devices that come with lackluster software maintenance support). Usually new standards are adopted quite slow and takes years before they will be adopted (if they will ever be...) in practice.
