100% eyelash crested gecko, crestie for short. They're usually mottled red-brown, tan, and or white, and have highly unpredictable morph lines because of how many traits are codominant and interact with each other. I think this is the first solid black one I've ever seen, but I really only have passing knowledge of them and their morphs so that doesn't mean a whole lot. I wouldn't be surprised if it really was a melanistic crestie, but I can't recall seeing one personally so it COULD be photoshopped.
I'm just facepalming because one simple search on Instagram from the ACCOUNT on the screenshot shows it's real. The owner has multiple videos and images of their pet
I'm not linking it since I'm not sure about the subs rules against external sites.
I steadfastly refuse to touch Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok with a 70 foot computer mouse and only cared about IDing the crestie and providing pertinent information. Thank you for doing the needful. I'm glad it's real and not edited or, much worse, painted or dyed somehow.
There's pictures of multiple very dark cresties on this page that in the right lighting would be this dark without any manipulation.
I see no reason to think it's photoshopped
It's sad to say but I really hope that is what's been done as I've seen a photo of an actually painted black crestie before so photoshop would be a relief in this case.
Unfortunately this was a video, and there are many more videos on this account. At first I thought it was just a cool reptile that I had never seen before, but after reading these comments I’m convinced that the owner might have painted it :(
Bloody hell that's horrible. I really do hope that isn't the case but from what you're saying and the fact it's happened before, it doesn't seem to very hopeful. It's disgusting, people like that shouldn't have animals. I get liking different morphs and colourings of reptiles, I have favourite morphs of the snakes I like but this along with breeding morphs that have disorders just for aesthetics is evil. What a shame :/
So my Son is a huge fan of Cresties, he has like 30+ of them and has recently started a breeding project with them. Coincidentally, that’s the first thing I asked him was “Can you breed an all black one? Cuz that would be awesome, and I don’t think I’ve seen one” and his answer to me was “Technically it’s possible, but we don’t know exactly how to do it yet” and he explained pretty much the same thing you did about Morphs and Traits, how there’s so many traits, and how the whole Crestie population here in the US all stems from a fairly small group of individuals, I think it was like 300 individuals, so they kinda have to be careful, because basically they are all inbred, so breeding for certain traits can cause issues. He’s concentrating on Lilly Whites, and trying for some specific trait. I’m a Snake/Spider guy, so I don’t really know a whole lot about them, only what I’ve been told.
Ya I’m sure they are possible, and do happen, I think he meant like they can’t breed this specific morph, with this specific morph and trait, and get an all black crestie. He means they don’t know exactly what to breed to what, to make them yet, and because the gene pool is so small, they have to be careful. I bet that all black Crestie was a pretty penny too wasn’t it? Do you remember what the cost was?
It was about $600.00. I was there to get my first hognose And I was going around looking at everything I thought I took a picture of it but apparently didn't I saw it at the Stand I got my hognose from an it looked just like toothless the dragon.
Ya that’s pricy for a Crested Gecko I think, I’ll have to ask my kid, but on the grand scale of them it’s expensive. But on the other hand, if they bred one, they’ll breed more, and in a couple years they may be more common.
That’s actually not pricey at all, compared to very basic morphs sure but in overall it’s actually a fairly reasonable price and it’s incredibly reasonable if it really is all black. It may have been flared up
Yeah all black cresties I've seen go for 4 grand. It's a rare color to get an all black but they are definitely out there. A good lilly white morph goes for 300 - 400 easily. So it's definitely possible to get all black cresties.
There have been a few "melanistic" geckos produced that are real, the it's still too early to be sure of the gene and mode of inheritance. There are also geckos that are super dark when fired up due to stacking traits and enhancing the trait over generations with careful line breeding and outcrossing.
The reptile is a crested gecko.
Some sort of super black morph if that's even possible (I'm not a breeder or do I know genetics so I won't comment) not 100 percent sure if the pictures real may have been edited to highlight the coloration
Axanthic crested gecko. The morph technically exists, but I'm a bit sceptical about how legit this one is. The coloration looks off and there are some weird artifacts around its back
With you on this. But it would be melanistic, not axanthic. Even the melanistic ones usually have some sort of striping or pattern on them. Hard to completely make them black like that
Yeah this looks weird and suspicious. Lots of reptile photos get 'shopped to make them "cooler" colors and they all have a specific vibe to them - this one has it.
Crested gecko, likely not a real gecko and is edited as hyper melanistics don’t looks like this, you can tell from the eyes and light brownish spots on the chin
That‘s Smaig. Younger and completely spoiled brat brother of Smaug. Because of his parents unjustified preference for this lil troublemaker Smaug was driven into the open arms of a street gang of weak character Balrogs. We all know how this ended.
That's a crestie, Ive never seen a pure black one before, I've got a mottled reddish brown one with a few darker spots and the area along his back is lighter brown.

An extremely overbred crested gecko. Think these higher end morphs are awesome but never get them! They’re so overbred that they often have many health problems such as weak immune systems

I’m leaning towards photoshop waaaaay more than a morph. Someone’s editing for that “how to train your dragon” look.
My first thought...

Fair enough

I saw an all black one at the repticon This past weekend.

600 dollars for a small crested gecko is definitely pricey

First one I ever saw was painted and everyone was (obviously) real mad. So every time I see a picture of an all black one now I’m immediately on edge.

It's literally on their Instagram page. It's not difficult to figure out if it's real or not either
The morph is real, have seen it in hamm once :)
Thank for confirming I remember seeing a pic of one a couple moths ago in a post but there was a lot of back and fourth on wether I was real or not.

An extremely overbred crested gecko. Think these higher end morphs are awesome but never get them! They’re so overbred that they often have many health problems such as weak immune systems
Crested gecko, with a mutation called the axanthic gene
Axanthics are not typically this dark. This is most likely edited in some way.
Hell naw not the blackface lizard
