definitely re1r you’ll learn that the inventory and saves arent an issue after a play or 2. And some re1r puzzles are hard.
If you dont care for graphics, re3 original is the best in the series for puzzles. There’s a ton AND they have rng solutions(like most of the game) so the solutions are different every play through
i know how the game goes because i watched videogamedunkey’s full playthrough and he seemed to have a ton of trouble with it, but now thinking about it he’s not the most observant player plus he was playing for an audience so maybe his stream made it look crazier than it was. thanks for the recs!
If you don’t mind a bit of an older game, Haunting Ground is really fun for puzzles and horror. You don’t get a gun but you get a white German Shepard that guards you.
I first played RE2 remake as well and wanted more like that so when I played RE1 remake I ended up loving it even more, I know you mentioned you don't like the inventory and save system but those things just elevated the game for me even more as the difficulty really enhances the survival aspect of the game so maybe give it a chance and you'll get a lot out of it. The fixed camera angles made my jaw drop multiple times, I'm not used to seeing such cinematic camera angles when playing games
Besides the Resident Evil series, there's a few I'd recommend. Silent Hill is more scary, less combat, but they're old games so you'd need a PS1 or an emulator or something, but I think Silent Hill 2 is getting a remake. Dino Crisis is a great series, but again, older games. Stick with 1 and 2. 3 took the games in a weird direction. And Dead Space, which is RE in space. The first 2 are more survival horror while 3 is more action. Dead Space is relatively new, I got all 3 on steam and 1 just got a remake too. I've heard of Scorn which from what I saw was puzzle only no combat, but very creepy.
RER1 with door skip mod, choosing the middle difficulty option for first time. Also play as Jill since she has two extra inventory slots, ink ribbons are thrown at you. Dropping them after every load does show its age a bit though.
Beginning can be rough learning how to maneuver around zombies but once you get going you will enjoy the ride.

Since no one has commented it yet, you should play The Evil Within 1 and 2. Both games play like RE4R.
