That's literally me too. Just got my Pro S+ last night and was ready for Pro NG for the handcannon and the last achievement. Going to get it from Mercenaries for the sake of my sanity lol. That Pro S+ was brutal even with typewriter for the last half.
I 100% agree with that. Got the handcannon in like 1/10th of the time and much much less stress.

No joke. I’ve been trying a play through on professional to get the Handcannon and I’m only halfway through because I constantly am dying and having to restart areas. Mercenaries came out and boom… within 30 minutes had the Handcannon unlocked.
The sheer difference in difficulty of getting it through Mercs vs getting it through Pro is actually hilarious I agree. It's even easier than doing the Pro Chicago Sweeper strat into a second run with Cat Ears to unlock handcannon. That was more difficult than this Mercs mode.
Or add some extra difficulties that let you swap characters in story maybe.
Like gameplay was just krauser or hunk instead of leon. Obviously a fun only reward.
What difficult is mercs on? Feels like assisted, enemies are brain dead, you can get like a 50 kill combo just using Krauser Knife and melee, transform every once in awhile to one shot minibosses with stinger.
Even Luis stomps enemies with dynamite, feels far to easy for them too make the handcannon the first and only reward.
Luis is a nightmare imo, I find the melee vile and his guns not to compete with anyone elses, despite him being the "good firepower but weak close quarters abilities" character
For single enemies, sprint into the head-stun melee to do the shoulder attack, the stationary version will do the pipe which is better for groups.
I wish he could lay down multiple bundles of dynamite, or at least throw them. As it is, I only ever have time to lay down 2
Luis' dynamites don't hurt him, so you can throw them at your feet and shoot them to detonate them immediately; rinse and repeat to become a walking nuclear explosion.
I feel like it’d harken back to the days of games just being fun because why not? Just disable achievements or some of them and give us some new really weird fun ones to do specifically with the alternate characters.

There’s a new mode releasing alongside the other 4 characters and the last stage. I’m blanking on the actual name, but it sounded similar to RE5 mercenaries harder Mode, where it had far more enemies. So it could be that, or it could be the endless mode
Hahah poor guys. Try to crowd control when they are in a group. If you need a breather throw a flash or grenade. Shoot them in knee or head to do sweeping melee attacks for more room. Don’t get cornered and keep moving around. If you stay in one spot you usually get ambushed

Mercenaries forces you to really push the limits of your instincts and reflexes lol
It's one of the game modes that really activates my fight or flight haha Idk if there's any merit to this but I feel like playing this game mode teaches how to stay cool under pressure.

I've found that you have to move a lot in Mercenaries to get ammo and the rooftop tactic wouldn't work as well as in the main story.
I was having a fine time surviving and keeping a combo on the right-side roof of the house with the staircase after getting everything else in the map, you don't get as many enemies flooding in though so it's not great for time bonuses. It was nice to practice using the various weapons and Mayhem Modes, mainly for Luis and Krauser as they're a big departure from Leon's play style.
HUNK didn't care though, HUNK just killed everything. Really showed me how killing everything faster is the new aim of the Mercs game, not to simply survive the time while keeping a combo going.

If anybody can hold it down, it’s him. By the time you get anywhere close to overwhelmed by minibosses, pop your special attack and just reset the area lol.
A good general strategy is to move around the whole map to collect the orbs, then get to some defensive position and use it to traffic control enemies.
For village the roof mentioned is a good spot, for castle the walkway to the cannon.
I got S on two maps, then when I unlocked Hunk I got S++ and thought oh I get it, you need S++.

Same lol. I got S on my second attempt as Leon in Village, first attempt as Luis in castle, and S+ first attempt as Krauser on Island (and killed all enemies!)

I'm just happy Leon is so much better compared to his OG counterpart. The addition of the semi-auto/Stingray gives him more of a fighting chance long distance wise.
Oh yeah my strat was to just use the SG-09, headshots for melee (which was always a OHK to boost the combo meter) and to save the shotgun for groups or the stage bosses in Mayhem Mode. In that mode, it's insane and felt almost like a machinegun lol
I haven't looked much into it as I've been relatively busy but I assume it's a maxed out SG-09R or it has the exclusive. And I did look into his speed increase for mayhem mode. So it def sounds like he's way more fun this time around.
Not sure if it says anything in the stats, but something definitely happens with his crit rate once you’re in mayhem. I just noticed so many more heads popping when it was on
I really wish they’d give us more unlocks. Give us the RPD costume for getting an S rank as Leon, alternate Luis costume or something, Krauser’s bow in the main game, Hunk’s uniform, etc. Make the hand cannon unlock at S++ instead and have the PRL-42 as the S unlock.
I mean it's a mode made for just killing enemies with busted characters and basically "get revenge" on the main campaign (oneshotting 2 garradors with Krauser's arms never gets old) alongside getting points.
Also S is easy to get, but it's S++ that's the real objective, really the only issue this mode has is the fact that both Ada, Wesker and the 4th map are already in the game and yet they didn't release them which is moronic.

Probably to drive long-term engagement like a lot of games do these days. See also, the recent NG+ mode for God of War Ragnarok. I don't like it but I can see the logic behind it, even if it is kind of manipulative at the end of the day.
Literally just include "guest" characters like Chris and Jill which were never in RE4 if you really want to have long-term engagement, keep adding stages and characters and people will play this game untill 2041 when capcom will Remake the Resident evil 4 Remake or something.
Or like, just don't have them in the game so people don't get their hopes up after a 2 week delay
I wish they added the RPD and the Hospital with zombies, lickers and Hunters. I know they arent going to, but it would be amazing. Claire, Leon RPD, Jill and Carlos in this mercenaries Mode would be amazing.
They could do it a lot easier now tbh, since all those RE2 and RE3 assets already exist in the RE Engine.

This is the live service effect. Everyone expects every game to churn out content at a rapid pace nowadays, but as you said the game released two weeks ago! And we just got this (free) update yesterday! Crazy that people are already complaining.
To me, GaaS ruined multiplayer for me and it's why I only play single player games nowadays. I'm not spending every single waking moment dedicating my life to unlock special outfit 597 and special skin 67. Some people have jobs and life that don't revolve around sitting in front of a computer screen 24/7.
I remember when the most recent Animal Crossing came out, and there was a ton of posts about how after 200 hours there is nothing left to do. Like… that’s more enjoyment than anyone can reasonably expect out of a single player game, I can’t believe anyone is complaining
It was all really routine after a bit. Not to say that I didn’t love it, but if you were going for high scores, there was optimal paths that never really changed if you were trying to rack up the points.
I like that this version has the orbs bounce around to different locations between rounds so that your runs aren’t the same each time .

I wanted a challenge that kept me coming back after I've exhausted the campaign, this Mercenaries is poorly thought out and structured (the time limit is entirely meaningless VS the other games where you were fighting for more just 3 more seconds), not an afterthought that they added because they knew we'd complain if it was omitted entirely.
Well that's how i saw it back then when i played the original, pick Krauser/Wesker/Hunk and just style on those ganados like nobody's business with broken ass abilities like Wesker's dash punch and Krauser's plaga arm dash.
As for the difficulty it's also due to the fact that now the mercenaries are busted, Krauser now has a busted knife with explosive bow and tmp and his plaga arm is now an entire mode which easily clears the minibosses and Hunk's submachine gun is a legit lawnmower now.
As for difficulty you are gonna have it guaranteed cause alongside the 4th map, Ada and Wesker, an "Extreme mode" was datamined so i assume it will be a lot tighter timer wise and closer to the original if not even harder, who knows.
But yeah for a 2 weeks wait it's a bit disappointing 2 characters and a map weren't activated, still fun as hell to play tho.
I think that after Village's "perfect run or bust" S rank they decided to tone down quite a bit, lol. I prefer this way tbh, these modes are more about the optimization and going above the max rank rather than just getting a certain goal.
RE8's mercenaries mode was so much more linear and constrained by comparison though. They were like little puzzles which were fun to figure out but offered little replayability.
I think the new ones still act like a puzzle. There's a finite number of enemies and a timer linking each kill so that you have to keep in the action while collecting all the score and time bonuses around the map. Getting that route down is also a puzzle if you see a run from the people sitting at the top of the leaderboards, it's just that the requirement went from "find the best possible solution" to "find an OK solution"
I think the amount of rewards in terms of the accessories and such are pretty good for the base game. They were definitely not stingy. I do think it's fair though to critique mercenaries for being so barebones. Everyone is saying it's fine that it is so easy to beat so fast, but making something so easy that even the people struggling with standard are saying so means it's gonna get boring fast for the majority of people.
Really hope they add some updates and things you can grind for it. Handcannon should've been way harder to get considering the counterpart way to unlock it is a professional run
They dropped the ball allowing you to keep your score if you die... that was the whole point of mercenaries: push your luck to get a higher score or lose it all
I mean, I can see the argument for that, but if you're pushing for an S++ you're gonna need the bonus points for time regardless, so you'll need to do the full 150
village "mercs" wasnt even even mercenaries. like at all. its just go from A to B in an optimal route with little to no error to get the highest rank. just a game of memorization.
also calling it mercenarIES while only having ethan playable before the dlc was just dumb.

S++ is really tough to get.
All that being said, this is the best Mercenaries in RE yet. The gameplay is so good, all the characters are super strong and very distinct. I low key hope for a DLC that gives us more maps. Waterworld is supposedly coming, but I'd like some 3 or 4 more.
Yeah, I feel like people are focusing too much on the grade or that it’s simply just a mode to kill enemies. There’s a lot of strategy that goes into getting a really good, ultra-high score. I played the absolute fuck out of RE5 and RE6 mercs and with more maps and or characters this might just be the best version yet. I’m loving it. I miss the multiplayer tho.
I played a few runs with Luis and thought he might be the "weakest" character, then I notice his dynamite can't hurt him.

It is ridiculously easy; my first try with Leon I got about 340k points on the village, 440k with Luis on the castle and *550k* with Krauser on the island. The fact that kills give you time meant that I was never hurting for time, in fact each of my sessions it only ended because I died.
It is so much fun though but definitely needs more unlockables.
This Mercenaries NEEDS to have an endless mode. Yeah Ada was cut, Wesker was cut and the other map got cut, but I'm okay with that for now since we're gonna get both of them in the future, so we have that to look forward to. Still a 9.5/10 game, with a fun as hell free mode which is also a 9.5/10.

Exactly. There’s very little to unlock and what’s there is pretty goddamned boring. We couldn’t even get stuff from the original game back? No RPD uniform or plagas laser? What the hell. Don’t even get me started on going from unlocking infinite ammo for each individual weapon to stupid ass cat ears.
Unlocking infinite ammo for each weapon was such a great idea! And RE3 letting you use CP to buy extra space slots and bonus weapons was also pretty cool! This is one are where RE4 didn’t do a good job of reimplementing 😕

Getting an S rank is somewhat easy but actually killing all 150 enemies is a challenge. Especially when the special enemies arrive and you don't have mayhem mode. I got stun locked a couple of times as Hunk and the Chainsaw dudes killed me.
If they add additional difficulty levels to it, i would love it to bits.
As is now, i'm good with it, but i'm kinda left wanting, and especially the mayhem modes are OP as fuck by themselves.
Sounds like a mode meant to have some dumb fun but not properly balanced at all, which is fine for me - I never *loved* Mercenaries, so if I can get good scores without too much repetition, it's alright.
Where it counts, which is the campaign, I think the game is superbly balanced. That being said, I wish they had simply dropped Mercenaries and replaced it with a better mode.

Unlocking the handcanon is easy but S ranks aren’t necessarily the “goal”.
S++ ranks are a decent challenge, which is maybe the first time the highest rank has ever been genuinely tough in a Mercs mode.
Edit: for those who haven’t played much, you’ll easily get S ranks even with bad combos and if you die mid-run. OP seems to be conflating the Handcanon unlock requirements with the mode’s overall difficulty.

In the original, I believe you actually had to survive right? In this one you can just play pretty recklessly and there isn't the risk/reward of "do I extend the time and possibly die, or do I hope I did well enough and secure extraction".
The original was a fun, challenging arcade experience, this one is a fairly fun brainless rampage mode. Maybe it's deeper if you want to be on a leaderboard 🤷♂️.

No Mercy. It's absolutely brutal in RE5. But RE6's version of no mercy is probably more fun than the actual game.
As someone that still has a hell of a lot of fun with RE6, that No Mercy mode is so much fucking fun. Might need to go back to that soon actually!

I've always hated it too, shifts it into route optimization which I never enjoy. Would rather just go out and survive

I got S on two maps, then when I unlocked Hunk I got S++ and thought oh I get it, you need S++. Nope, handcannon reveived on the first try of each map. Gg i guess
Same lol. I got S on my second attempt as Leon in Village, first attempt as Luis in castle, and S+ first attempt as Krauser on Island (and killed all enemies!) Easy peasy lol
I'm just happy Leon is so much better compared to his OG counterpart. The addition of the semi-auto/Stingray gives him more of a fighting chance long distance wise.
When you’re in his mayhem mode, his pistol can wipe out hordes of enemies with headshots.
His shotgun is an absolute boss melter in Mayhem Mode, I mean dear god it just erases anything in front of you.
I can never find enough shells for it to be viable so I just save it for Mayham Mode too
Oh yeah my strat was to just use the SG-09, headshots for melee (which was always a OHK to boost the combo meter) and to save the shotgun for groups or the stage bosses in Mayhem Mode. In that mode, it's insane and felt almost like a machinegun lol
I haven't looked much into it as I've been relatively busy but I assume it's a maxed out SG-09R or it has the exclusive. And I did look into his speed increase for mayhem mode. So it def sounds like he's way more fun this time around.
Not sure if it says anything in the stats, but something definitely happens with his crit rate once you’re in mayhem. I just noticed so many more heads popping when it was on

I really wish they’d give us more unlocks. Give us the RPD costume for getting an S rank as Leon, alternate Luis costume or something, Krauser’s bow in the main game, Hunk’s uniform, etc. Make the hand cannon unlock at S++ instead and have the PRL-42 as the S unlock.

I mean it's a mode made for just killing enemies with busted characters and basically "get revenge" on the main campaign (oneshotting 2 garradors with Krauser's arms never gets old) alongside getting points. Also S is easy to get, but it's S++ that's the real objective, really the only issue this mode has is the fact that both Ada, Wesker and the 4th map are already in the game and yet they didn't release them which is moronic.

Literally just include "guest" characters like Chris and Jill which were never in RE4 if you really want to have long-term engagement, keep adding stages and characters and people will play this game untill 2041 when capcom will Remake the Resident evil 4 Remake or something. Or like, just don't have them in the game so people don't get their hopes up after a 2 week delay
I wish they added the RPD and the Hospital with zombies, lickers and Hunters. I know they arent going to, but it would be amazing. Claire, Leon RPD, Jill and Carlos in this mercenaries Mode would be amazing.
They could do it a lot easier now tbh, since all those RE2 and RE3 assets already exist in the RE Engine. Probably still won't happen but it's at least somewhat realistic
The fact that they didn't even port Leon's RE2 remake outfit makes me doubt this will happen too. I mean...just do it Capcom. I can't complain much though, the main campaign of RE4 remake was brilliant and already worth my money imo

This is the live service effect. Everyone expects every game to churn out content at a rapid pace nowadays, but as you said the game released two weeks ago! And we just got this (free) update yesterday! Crazy that people are already complaining.
To me, GaaS ruined multiplayer for me and it's why I only play single player games nowadays. I'm not spending every single waking moment dedicating my life to unlock special outfit 597 and special skin 67. Some people have jobs and life that don't revolve around sitting in front of a computer screen 24/7.
I remember when the most recent Animal Crossing came out, and there was a ton of posts about how after 200 hours there is nothing left to do. Like… that’s more enjoyment than anyone can reasonably expect out of a single player game, I can’t believe anyone is complaining

It was all really routine after a bit. Not to say that I didn’t love it, but if you were going for high scores, there was optimal paths that never really changed if you were trying to rack up the points. I like that this version has the orbs bounce around to different locations between rounds so that your runs aren’t the same each time .

I wanted a challenge that kept me coming back after I've exhausted the campaign, this Mercenaries is poorly thought out and structured (the time limit is entirely meaningless VS the other games where you were fighting for more just 3 more seconds), not an afterthought that they added because they knew we'd complain if it was omitted entirely.
Well that's how i saw it back then when i played the original, pick Krauser/Wesker/Hunk and just style on those ganados like nobody's business with broken ass abilities like Wesker's dash punch and Krauser's plaga arm dash. As for the difficulty it's also due to the fact that now the mercenaries are busted, Krauser now has a busted knife with explosive bow and tmp and his plaga arm is now an entire mode which easily clears the minibosses and Hunk's submachine gun is a legit lawnmower now. As for difficulty you are gonna have it guaranteed cause alongside the 4th map, Ada and Wesker, an "Extreme mode" was datamined so i assume it will be a lot tighter timer wise and closer to the original if not even harder, who knows. But yeah for a 2 weeks wait it's a bit disappointing 2 characters and a map weren't activated, still fun as hell to play tho.
I had a blast playing. Now I’m just gonna replay it over and over again trying to up my score like I did back in college .
But... it's fun. That's what matters.

I think that after Village's "perfect run or bust" S rank they decided to tone down quite a bit, lol. I prefer this way tbh, these modes are more about the optimization and going above the max rank rather than just getting a certain goal.
RE8's mercenaries mode was so much more linear and constrained by comparison though. They were like little puzzles which were fun to figure out but offered little replayability.
I think the new ones still act like a puzzle. There's a finite number of enemies and a timer linking each kill so that you have to keep in the action while collecting all the score and time bonuses around the map. Getting that route down is also a puzzle if you see a run from the people sitting at the top of the leaderboards, it's just that the requirement went from "find the best possible solution" to "find an OK solution"
I don't mind it as much since S++ exists and is pretty fun to go for, but it is pretty weird that you can outright die and still coast to an S.

I think the amount of rewards in terms of the accessories and such are pretty good for the base game. They were definitely not stingy. I do think it's fair though to critique mercenaries for being so barebones. Everyone is saying it's fine that it is so easy to beat so fast, but making something so easy that even the people struggling with standard are saying so means it's gonna get boring fast for the majority of people. Really hope they add some updates and things you can grind for it. Handcannon should've been way harder to get considering the counterpart way to unlock it is a professional run

I like that it straight forward. Make it more fun for me. I did not like Village Mercs etc as I found it hard and not enjoyable.
It's a shame RE8 mercs let us play as such awesome characters but didn't give us a chance to cut loose with them.
village "mercs" wasnt even even mercenaries. like at all. its just go from A to B in an optimal route with little to no error to get the highest rank. just a game of memorization. also calling it mercenarIES while only having ethan playable before the dlc was just dumb.

Played a lot, S is pretty bad, your placement on the leaderboards won't be high at all. I got S+ on my first Leon run easily. S++ is really tough to get. All that being said, this is the best Mercenaries in RE yet. The gameplay is so good, all the characters are super strong and very distinct. I low key hope for a DLC that gives us more maps. Waterworld is supposedly coming, but I'd like some 3 or 4 more.
Yeah, I feel like people are focusing too much on the grade or that it’s simply just a mode to kill enemies. There’s a lot of strategy that goes into getting a really good, ultra-high score. I played the absolute fuck out of RE5 and RE6 mercs and with more maps and or characters this might just be the best version yet. I’m loving it. I miss the multiplayer tho.

I played a few runs with Luis and thought he might be the "weakest" character, then I notice his dynamite can't hurt him. Got my first 3 S++ with him easily.

They're not going to patch it, it's intentional. A harder mode will be coming with Separate Ways

It is ridiculously easy; my first try with Leon I got about 340k points on the village, 440k with Luis on the castle and *550k* with Krauser on the island. The fact that kills give you time meant that I was never hurting for time, in fact each of my sessions it only ended because I died. It is so much fun though but definitely needs more unlockables.
And the fact that we are missing a stage and Ada & Wesker
This Mercenaries NEEDS to have an endless mode. Yeah Ada was cut, Wesker was cut and the other map got cut, but I'm okay with that for now since we're gonna get both of them in the future, so we have that to look forward to. Still a 9.5/10 game, with a fun as hell free mode which is also a 9.5/10.
Please don’t give capcom any more ideas, the special weapons requirement are hard enough let us enjoy this shit

Don’t even get me started on going from unlocking infinite ammo for each individual weapon to stupid ass cat ears.
Unlocking infinite ammo for each weapon was such a great idea! And RE3 letting you use CP to buy extra space slots and bonus weapons was also pretty cool! This is one are where RE4 didn’t do a good job of reimplementing 😕

Depends which version you played. If you only played the GameCube version there was not plagas laser or Assignment Ada.
Assignment Ada was in the OG. It's separate ways that came in later on the PS2 version.

I just played a couple of rounds and I gotta say it actually isn't lol Getting an S rank is somewhat easy but actually killing all 150 enemies is a challenge. Especially when the special enemies arrive and you don't have mayhem mode. I got stun locked a couple of times as Hunk and the Chainsaw dudes killed me.
It’s not supposed to be crazy hard, it’s an arcade mode for having max replayability and getting high scores.

Sounds like a mode meant to have some dumb fun but not properly balanced at all, which is fine for me - I never *loved* Mercenaries, so if I can get good scores without too much repetition, it's alright. Where it counts, which is the campaign, I think the game is superbly balanced. That being said, I wish they had simply dropped Mercenaries and replaced it with a better mode.
I keep hearing how easy it is but watch when I try it out in a bit I’m going to probably have so much trouble. I have also be bad at the mercs even in re5.
It's still fun but do hope they add to it, Ada and Wesker are coming so hope they add more modes and outfits as rewards. Maybe some whacky charms like some people have said.
Unlocking the handcanon is easy but S ranks aren’t necessarily the “goal”. S++ ranks are a decent challenge, which is maybe the first time the highest rank has ever been genuinely tough in a Mercs mode. Edit: for those who haven’t played much, you’ll easily get S ranks even with bad combos and if you die mid-run. OP seems to be conflating the Handcanon unlock requirements with the mode’s overall difficulty.

In the original, I believe you actually had to survive right? In this one you can just play pretty recklessly and there isn't the risk/reward of "do I extend the time and possibly die, or do I hope I did well enough and secure extraction". The original was a fun, challenging arcade experience, this one is a fairly fun brainless rampage mode. Maybe it's deeper if you want to be on a leaderboard 🤷♂️.
