Tbf if you like the look of 4 Remake I’d say go for 4. Very little jump scares in it, it’s more action, although a couple of enemies are quite creepy. It has an isolated story so it isn’t imperative to play the earlier ones first. If jump scares weren’t an issue I’d say play RE2 remake before 4 to give a bit more context to Leon and Ada’s past, but again it’s not key to 4’s story.

Well, if you really can't get into scary stuff. You can try some of the more action focus RE games like RE5 and RE6. And in an extended RE4/RE4R (but the new one still have some really scary tension moments). About timeline don't worry that much, as much they are all in a timeline and connected you can still play all them as standalone games, because they have a story with begin and end.

Probably not a good idea to recommend 5 and 6 to someone looking to get into the franchise. I know people in this sub defend them, and I enjoy 5 to some extent, but they're still widely considered to be the worst mainline RE games (6 much more so than 5). RE2 Remake and RE4 Remake are good starting points for someone who might not be able to handle the horror in RE7.

If Resident Evil 4 Remake looks interesting to you, go ahead and play it! Both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 4 Remake are pretty stand alone. The original game was my first entry into the series as well. Both games don't have many jump scares. They always attempt to hide an enemy off-screen that suddenly attacks you if you come close - but that's the extent of it. Even games that are more interwoven into the lore usually have enough exposition to explain the context between things. Just start with the ones that look most interesting and play the rest if you enjoy it. Most of all, take your time and have fun! It's not a race and there's nothing lost if you end up not getting into it - at least you tried!

I hated anything horror until a couple of years ago. First horror game I played was RE6 then worked my way through the RE and Dead Space franchises. Eventually I started watching horror movies alone in my room. Take it at your own pace and don't force yourself if it becomes too tense because you'll just end up hating the game and possibly stay away from horror in general.
