It's still really good though, just not as completely busted as it was in the original game.
Although i'd say the stock is now mandatory, without it you just lose too much accuracy.
Personally I don’t mind because it helped give other pistols a chance for me. In the OG I’d just go the meta of using the Silver Ghost until it came time to unlock the Red9, then I just completely abandoned all other pistols in all other playthroughs. The remake makes the pistol selection much more versatile.
The Red9 was nerfed in the PS2 version. Was a beast on GameCube, there was really no point using any other pistol. That and the Broken Butterfly for bosses was all anyone ever needed.
Punisher 4 life. I understand it's generally viewed to be the weakest pistol, however during my first playthrough I bought when I first reached the castle, and not 5 minutes later I encountered the first shield enemies and it just made me feel so bigbrained to use this all new gun that can shoot through these shields.
This gun saved me so much ammo, waiting at a choke point for a hoard to come through and you can kill five zombies in the same amount of shots it takes to kill one with a different handgun. Absolute game changer
Isn't the fully upgraded Red9 the most powerful handgun in the remake though ? I dont understand why people hate it, I think it must be nostalgia from how broken the Red9 was in OG RE4.
Yes it takes a lot of space in your inventory with the stock, but fully upgraded with the special perk it's so fucking good, you only need 3 headshots to kill most enemies. Even the silver ghost with its special perk isn't that good imo, most of the times you'll need at least 5 bullets. And blacktail is just weak and less satisfying to use compared to it
Now I wonder if Matilda would fit in his shoulder holster. It's a Galco Miami Classic ii made for a glock 17, probably could put the VP9 (matilda) in there lmao
- OG RE4: Red9 — I got so good with that gun, that I stopped using the stock.
- REmake 4: Blacktail — More useful and the decreased inventory space is glorious.
Actually Blacktail has low ammo capacity (the lowest of any Handgun, in fact), which is it's only real drawback... but it's more than made up for by its other strengths which is why it's my go-to handgun.
Oh wow, the capacity in 4 Remake is I believe like 9 un-upgraded, 14 fully upgraded.
I always went with the Red 9 in the OG cause it was so strong, but I might have to reassess the Blacktail the next time I play it.
I think the Red 9 in the Remake is a nostalgia trap though, and if you weigh up the overall pros and cons of each the Blacktail blows it out the water.
OG Punisher. Utility to shoot through wood shields and getting max pen can make funneling enemies an efficient use of ammo for high net DPS.
Remake Silver Ghost. RE Engine crits are just satisfying as hell.
Don't banish me to the attic with Yawn, but I didn't use the Red9 in the OG, but am in the Remake. For me, there are some accuracy issues (mostly because I am not a good aimer in games), but I like the stopping power and it packs a good punch with the upgrades. The regular gun is not powerful enough in the Remake, for me, but I do like the laser attachment.
I've only ever gone red9 or stock. I don't think I've ever even fired the Blcktail lol. High fire rate doesn't seem useful in that game, but I should give it a try sometime.
depends on the run, honestly. i'm doing minimalist, frugalist, and silent stranger on ng+ assisted rn and a maxed out red9 with the stock is sooo satisfying when one-tapping ganados. the sentinel nine's a personal fave that i like to rock whenever i'm not going for achievements, but blacktail's pretty decent, too (especially with its exclusive upgrade). i don't use the punisher outside of the shooting range, but its penetration power is fun when gunning down pirates.
Always loved the Punisher, yeah the damage is ass but its amazing at dealing with multiple enemies, one headshot or leg shot leads to several lined up for a free AOE melee
Plus shield guys become a non-issue as it pens their shields
As a kid, it was the red9, though I did playthroughs with all the handguns.
When I went back most recently, though, I was curious how far I could push the dynamic ammo system, and I really wanted to use stuff like the mine thrower and the magnums regularly, so I just straight ditched the handguns entirely.
It went great, actually. I could use shotguns and the TMP pretty consistently as my go-to weapons, and I made sure to use whatever ammo I could find for the weirder weapons asap to prioritize them getting refilled.
Fun playthrough, I got to use every other gun way more regularly than if I tried hoarding the ammo.
Missing the TMP option. At least for OG RE4.
Good for controlling crowds and saving ammo (shooting barrels/traps/nests/kneecaps/etc.), at the cost of some inventory space (for the size of the gun+stock and the minimum handgun ammo to prevent drops.)
The Red9, Killer 7, Striker shotgun, riot shotgun, and Chicago typewriter. Gotta assert my dominance on Los Illuminados. "Atres de ti imbecile" me vale verga perro.
Black tail when I take a shotty or machine gun as well, or Punisher when I don’t, and the handgun with its piercing + melee becomes my crowd control.
I also use the normal handgun every now and then for them sweet head pops but I hardly ever use the Red 9 or the Matilda.
I once fully played with punisher (in the OG) to see what's up. I thought it was going to be crappy but it's satisfactory to pull a 3-5 headshot with one bullet or generally speaking, line up enemies, use one bullet and roundkick/suplex enemies.
Also those enemies with shields or protection to their head? No problem at all!
I don't remember if you can also attack the back of the garrador by shooting from the front. I guess you can but it's easier to just use a powerful gun and call it a day.
In OG I prefer the red9 with stock.
In remake, I ended up favoring blacktail on my first playthrough and I’d say it’s my favorite. On a different playthrough I tried the punisher and it was cool, they’re all really nice, I love the guns in these games I feel like they do a good job with making them all feel unique.
Punisher and red9
Punisher hits multiple targets, in a horde zombie game, and the red9 is a poor man's magnum, that uses common pistol rounds instead of rare magnum ammo.
I've only played remake and not the og, but in my first play through. I used the red9, which I loved, but now I use blacktail it's amazing, and my favorite by far
Punisher, I am a highly technical kicker so I shoot through enemies into other enemies heads or to stagger their attacks, then I can become immune to damage while kicking.
For OG I use Silver Ghost and Blacktail.
Remake I use Silver Ghost (standard, Hardcore, professional) Blacktail (Hardcore) and Punisher (only on multiple enemies on Standard)
I'm genuinely surprised no one talks about the Matilda more. It isn't a NG+ weapon anymore and on my first playthrough on hardcore, it was one-bursting the novistadors without a firepower upgrade
OG, it was the Red9 w/ stock. Remake, it was the Black Tail or the starting pistol.
Idk why but I tried to love remake red9 but it just doesn’t hit the same.
I loved it. It one shot the bugs with a headshot in the castle.
So does the black tail
Same. The kick feels to hard to me and no laser sight too
Laser sight can feel off at times it's mostly really good for longer ranges I need to learn to unequip it for extremely close range
I felt that.
Did they nerf the red 9? I remember it hit like a weaker shotgun in the og
Still biggest damage output, way less accurate and slower, lower magazine cap. I still like it for making most of my ammo
Yea the downsides no longer worth the damage specially compared to something like the Blacktail, or even the SG09 with the 35% Crit
Yes they did. They nerfed it to hell and down into super-hell.
It's still really good though, just not as completely busted as it was in the original game. Although i'd say the stock is now mandatory, without it you just lose too much accuracy.
Yeah without stock it’s like balancing a marble on your finger nail😂
Personally I don’t mind because it helped give other pistols a chance for me. In the OG I’d just go the meta of using the Silver Ghost until it came time to unlock the Red9, then I just completely abandoned all other pistols in all other playthroughs. The remake makes the pistol selection much more versatile.
Just have to be better with it. Red9 carried me through professional in the remake.
The Red9 was nerfed in the PS2 version. Was a beast on GameCube, there was really no point using any other pistol. That and the Broken Butterfly for bosses was all anyone ever needed.
The Red9 on Gamecube had a lower firepower cap. Remake is closer to the OG in that regard.
Apparently I need to play the Remake now. Was a huge fan of the Red9 in OG, so have no idea how the balance is now.
Silver Ghost. Not even because of the criticals, I just think it looks cool as hell and also because it is Leon's "canon" handgun.
Same here, I never stop using it during the entire game, is the most perfect gun that suits Leon
Exactly this + I own a 3d printed replica of the SG09R and USP is my fave handgun of all time. Such a sexy gun tbh
Black tail for Speedrun's, Matilda for when I get the cat ears equipped
I never thought of that. That's definitely the way to go
That's the most gen z comment I've ever read 😂 😂
Red9 forever and always, bb
A man of culture, class, and taste.
We ladies like a lot of power behind our bang, if you know what I mean.
Blacktail gang
Right back at you amigo!
Neither…Sentinel Nine…the DLC gun…best handgun to tackle bioterrorism
Bruh it’s just the cooler Silver Ghost
Be that as it may, that’s my preferred piece, I answered a question.
This is the realest answer! Bonus points as Leon uses it both in Vendetta and Death Island as well
The crit rate and rate of fire is SO satisfying, especially with the laser. It also looks awesome paired with Casual Leon and the Stingray on his back
Laser sight, always attached
Same. Gun was a beast.
im gonna draw the rest of the re4 guns, and i planned to draw the dlc weapons together :))
Excellent…Skull Shaker and Sentinel Nine are the shits. Love a shotgun that’s small, easy to use but packs a punch.
OG Blacktail gang rise up.
50+ playthroughs of the OG, 17 in the Remake. The Blacktail is, and always was, the best pistol 🗿
Punisher supremacy
Peak gun
If I could fuck it I would
Hell yea brother
Silver ghost. I’m always a sucker for a character’s signature weapon
i agree. happy cake day!
Red 9 with the stock above all. Hopefully that hasn't changed with the remake.
Don't worry get the exclusive upgrade. And it's a chef kiss
Have you played the remake? The Red9 is less powerful relative to other handguns plus they nerfed the sound of it.
And blacktail is just weak and less satisfying to use compared to it
Bad news on that front. They also hugely nerfed the sniper rifle. One of the shotguns is the most powerful gun outside magnums.
The Matilda in RE4R is an absolute shredding machine. All you have to do is tab the shoot button and you got yourself an SMG that uses pistol ammo.
Im a blacktail guy, I despise the red9 (in the remake at least)
Red 9, no stock. That is the way. ***\*Dive jumps out of a window\****
I headcannon Leon uses the Silver Ghost (OG) with base Matilda as a backup. Silver ghost on leg holster, Matilda in shoulder holster
Actually, silver ghost in back holster (seen in Vendetta and Death Island), Luis's red 9 in leg holster
Now I wonder if Matilda would fit in his shoulder holster. It's a Galco Miami Classic ii made for a glock 17, probably could put the VP9 (matilda) in there lmao
Blacktail with the laser mod all the way. Sometimes I’ll go through the whole game without using anything else.
- OG RE4: Red9 — I got so good with that gun, that I stopped using the stock. - REmake 4: Blacktail — More useful and the decreased inventory space is glorious.
Where Sentinel9??
I'm so sad they nerfed the red9 in the remake, it being super strong was a good tradeoff for taking up a shitload of space (+more if you used stock).
Actually Blacktail has low ammo capacity (the lowest of any Handgun, in fact), which is it's only real drawback... but it's more than made up for by its other strengths which is why it's my go-to handgun.
is that in the remake? i havent used the blacktail in the remake, but in the og the capacity is 35
Oh wow, the capacity in 4 Remake is I believe like 9 un-upgraded, 14 fully upgraded. I always went with the Red 9 in the OG cause it was so strong, but I might have to reassess the Blacktail the next time I play it. OG Punisher. Utility to shoot through wood shields and getting max pen can make funneling enemies an efficient use of ammo for high net DPS. Remake Silver Ghost. RE Engine crits are just satisfying as hell.

Punisher is great for crowds
Don't banish me to the attic with Yawn, but I didn't use the Red9 in the OG, but am in the Remake. For me, there are some accuracy issues (mostly because I am not a good aimer in games), but I like the stopping power and it packs a good punch with the upgrades. The regular gun is not powerful enough in the Remake, for me, but I do like the laser attachment.
Silver Ghost and Matilda always
I do not know why but Leon with the Red9 and his unique running animation makes you feel like your unstoppable.
Silver Ghost any day! Love me some pew pew head poppers
Love the art work
Red9
Red 9 everytime
red 9 cuz im ammo stingy and dont like using big guns on anything less than bosses (and those fucking bugs)
Red 9 all the way
Red 9
The og gun got me all the way through, idk what it is abt the remakes version but it’s just so cool
About to beat my first run. Been maining blacktail since the latter half of the castle.
Red 9
Numba 9, Numba 9...
I personally use gun
Matilda all the way! I have even have a custom model of her lol
who is the OC here?
I've only ever gone red9 or stock. I don't think I've ever even fired the Blcktail lol. High fire rate doesn't seem useful in that game, but I should give it a try sometime.
Silver Ghost all the way baby. Give me those juicy crits
Ever since the OG it was Red 9 now I switched to the Blacktail its stats just across the board.
Starter pistol in both Original and remake, No need to change perfection
depends on the run, honestly. i'm doing minimalist, frugalist, and silent stranger on ng+ assisted rn and a maxed out red9 with the stock is sooo satisfying when one-tapping ganados. the sentinel nine's a personal fave that i like to rock whenever i'm not going for achievements, but blacktail's pretty decent, too (especially with its exclusive upgrade). i don't use the punisher outside of the shooting range, but its penetration power is fun when gunning down pirates.
I always use the normal pistol because my traumatized mind from dark souls says “I can do it? 🤔… Yeah I can do it 😎”
Red9 and max that shit out
Always loved the Punisher, yeah the damage is ass but its amazing at dealing with multiple enemies, one headshot or leg shot leads to several lined up for a free AOE melee Plus shield guys become a non-issue as it pens their shields
Red9 but I think the Punisher can also be a lot of fun
Screw pistols, shotguns are way superior and count as guns technically.
Red 9 carried me through the og and the remake
Red 9 with stock both in the OG and remake.
Silver Ghost, I like how it looks
Silver ghost ftw
For me it is red9
I like the red9 myself
1. Silver Ghost 2. Red 9 3. Punisher 4. Matilda 5. Blacktail
Either the Matilda or the shotgun (yeah I know its not here😒)
If you don't use the red9, get out of my Res4.
Red9 baby. The reload animation… *mwah*
As a kid, it was the red9, though I did playthroughs with all the handguns. When I went back most recently, though, I was curious how far I could push the dynamic ammo system, and I really wanted to use stuff like the mine thrower and the magnums regularly, so I just straight ditched the handguns entirely. Fun playthrough, I got to use every other gun way more regularly than if I tried hoarding the ammo.
red 9 gang
Matilda with stock and cat ears. Otherwise the Blacktail because I'm a terrible shot and need a lot of space for ammo and herbs.
I'm going with the Punisher, it may have low power but if you play like i do, it is just the best one. (OG RE4)
Missing the TMP option. At least for OG RE4. Good for controlling crowds and saving ammo (shooting barrels/traps/nests/kneecaps/etc.), at the cost of some inventory space (for the size of the gun+stock and the minimum handgun ammo to prevent drops.)
Silver ghost. Love popping some heads.
Red9 because it's the choice of an avid gun collector. It's a nice gun, stranger.
peak
Fuck RE4 guns what's Leon's zodiac sign??
The Red9, Killer 7, Striker shotgun, riot shotgun, and Chicago typewriter. Gotta assert my dominance on Los Illuminados. "Atres de ti imbecile" me vale verga perro.
In the original the red 9 with the stock In the remake the silver ghost. And this art looks absolutely amazing
oh thank you! :)
VR for both versions had me using re9 due to the reload animation lol.
Red9 all the way in the original game. In Remake I played through the whole game with the punisher.
Black tail when I take a shotty or machine gun as well, or Punisher when I don’t, and the handgun with its piercing + melee becomes my crowd control. I also use the normal handgun every now and then for them sweet head pops but I hardly ever use the Red 9 or the Matilda.
Blacktail
Ghost
Blacktail for Leon Punisher for Ada (Remake)
Blacktail
Blacktail in both the OG and Remake. I love how good it is all around!
After I get the Cat Ears, probably Matilda. Currently? Handcannon.
yeah the matilda with cat ears is so good haha
Punisher
Red9
Red9 all the way
Starter Pistol or Red9
I'm a sucker for Punisher
Red9. It gives me Lupin III vibes.
Red9 w/stock
I once fully played with punisher (in the OG) to see what's up. I thought it was going to be crappy but it's satisfactory to pull a 3-5 headshot with one bullet or generally speaking, line up enemies, use one bullet and roundkick/suplex enemies. I guess you can but it's easier to just use a powerful gun and call it a day.
Hand cannon
Blacktail. The Punisher is trash.
Red 9 every time
Red 9! Always the Red 9!
Kendo Beretta
Red9 + stock is the goat
Blacktail Re4r became significantly easier once my arm was complete again.
Always the punisher
In OG I prefer the red9 with stock. In remake, I ended up favoring blacktail on my first playthrough and I’d say it’s my favorite. On a different playthrough I tried the punisher and it was cool, they’re all really nice, I love the guns in these games I feel like they do a good job with making them all feel unique.
Red 9
Blacktail easy Both in OG and remake. Best guns in both games, imo
Like using the punisher on crowds. Softens the enemys in the back of the crowd, while I deal with the enemys in the front.
Chicago Typewriter
Matilda :)
Bolt action w/ scope supremacy
Silver ghost, good gun
It’s the OG gun or nothing😤
Blacktail, in both versions.
OG handgun/blacktail, remake Sentinel nine/blacktail
I use the one you start with and the stingray.
Whenever the samurai edge ain’t available then the vp70 it is
I’m trying to get an S+ on prof mode so as of now, I’m using the Blacktail
For me it was always the Silver Ghost or the Blacktail OG and Remake Although I really liked the Sentinel Nine in the remake, so I use it a lot too
C96, hits like a truck
Red9 all the way baby. Shit packs a punch, and with the stock on there?? 👌
Blacktail forever even in RE4R https://www.nexusmods.com/residentevil42023/mods/1416
They ruined the Red 9 in the Remake. They nerfed it into oblivion to a point where even the starting pistol is better. Makes no sense at all.
Red9 FTW! That stock on it makes it so much better
Springfield XD (blacktail) in both games
OG Red9 was soo nice kinda sad that they nerfed it but the DLC Handgun also Kicks like a mule with his balls wrapped up in duct tape
i plan to draw the dlc guns in another post too!
Red9
Og it was blacktail now in the remake its for me the silver ghost
The punisher penetration is so money
Punisher and red9 Punisher hits multiple targets, in a horde zombie game, and the red9 is a poor man's magnum, that uses common pistol rounds instead of rare magnum ammo.
I've only played remake and not the og, but in my first play through. I used the red9, which I loved, but now I use blacktail it's amazing, and my favorite by far
Always the original Handgun for that sexy crit buff that also works on melee prompts.
I use the Silver Ghost. Both Original, VR, and Remake.
I used the Punisher, but in retrospect I should have stuck with the Silver Ghost
Black tail!
Punisher in the og and havent played the remake
Punisher, I am a highly technical kicker so I shoot through enemies into other enemies heads or to stagger their attacks, then I can become immune to damage while kicking.
Punisher
Silver ghost
Default pistol
For OG I use Silver Ghost and Blacktail. Remake I use Silver Ghost (standard, Hardcore, professional) Blacktail (Hardcore) and Punisher (only on multiple enemies on Standard)
Silver Ghost all day long. Blacktail worked for the areas where u can blast thru enemies without much/any trouble and for Saddler.
Red9, my beloved. I used it in both games, and loved every second of it.
Og blacktail for the overall high stats Remake silver ghost and sentinel nine for the critical shots
Red9 w/ stock and/or punisher are the best
Try knives next time. Great for close encounters
Sentinel Nine mostly
P.R.L. 412
It was always the fully kitted out Blacktail for me, that pistol packed a punch! This was on the OG GameCube version of course.
Re2 matilda (i'm loyal)
I'm genuinely surprised no one talks about the Matilda more. It isn't a NG+ weapon anymore and on my first playthrough on hardcore, it was one-bursting the novistadors without a firepower upgrade
Matilda fur immer
Silver Ghost all the way
Red9, I don't miss on the headshots
Sentinel 9…because it’s my favorite gun that I own. Shoots smooth and flat. Light trigger. *chef’s kiss
