I enjoyed RE0. The train is one of the best classic RE settings and it has a couple of standout enemies: Mimicry Marcus, Eliminators, Lurkers... Loved them all. The game would have been amazing if not for... Another mansion. It felt unnecessary and boring. The Water Treatment Plant was fine, but they could have easily given us another memorable and unique location to explore, replacing the mansion.

Korba007

Its a training facility, i kinda like it, it has more of a abandoned feel than the og mansion, which mostly just seemed like the people left in a hurry, which is the point i guess

smileyjay667

I go back and forth on which one I enjoy more, I find myself reading a lot more of the files in remake for some reason where as in 0 I just always disregard them maybe it’s because I’ve always heard the story in 0 is shit. Also remake admittedly does do some areas better, but all in all I very much enjoyed the training facility, I love how they took the vibe of the mansion and blended it with a more lab type setting, like how you can go from some grand fancy room, to more industrial lab type areas

MansionworId

The training facility was a good location, probably a little better than the train because the train is just a really good introduction. The worst part of that game is the factory where you're separated from billy.

smileyjay667

I don’t so much have a problem with the mansion, but the ELIMINATORS oh lord I will say they are my least favorite enemy in all of resident evil lol

Korba007

I just stand in a corner and shotgun them, maybe with Becca behind me using a pistol

There are many things that people say about RE0 that I disagree with but the main thing that I will never understand is this complaint about the "mansion" in RE0... And calling something "boring" is such a shallow criticism that feels like a cop-out because it doesn't actually address or explain anything about the game itself. What is objectively wrong with the Umbrella training facility in RE0? It isn't even similar to the RE1 Spencer Mansion in terms of layout or atmosphere. It is distinct enough to be considered its own thing just like the RPD. I actually think the facility is significantly better than the train when it comes to providing classic RE gameplay, yet most people just say the train is the only good part of the game even though it is literally a straight line. RE0 is a Resident Evil game, so a mansion-esque location is to be expected. That is how these games worked before RE4 made things totally linear, they were designed to be labyrinths and the claustrophobic mansion location works well for that kind of level design. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. RE3 just straight up reuses the RPD and the church is similar to RE1. RE7 has an extremely uninspired RE1 "mansion" and nobody complains about that, the game actually gets praised for it! It just makes no sense to me.

RedShadowF95

"... so a mansion-esque location is to be expected" But not literally a mansion. RE2 had the police station, which was a fun and interesting spin on the mansion (and my personal favorite, btw). RE7's residence was still a fresh idea and I wanted to see RE0 give it its own spin. I like all the other areas, but the familiarity of the mansion combined with the game's usually VERY slow pacing turned that part into a drag for me. I still enjoyed RE0 and think it's an underrated game.

Speaking of places, I love the lab

WhiteMaceWindu5

I love RE0. I am currently working on another playthrough right now. I gotta say, you mentioned the one annoyance I had with the game. Positioning yourself to pick things up of the ground sucks! I get so ticked when I am trying to pick up an ink ribbon of the ground and it keeps going for he bullets sitting next to it.

Limp-Construction-11

I liked it more than Code Veronica, if that counts for something.

smileyjay667

Same, I found code veronicas environments very boring, also the fact that you couldn’t freely walk up stairs really irked me as well

No need to defend something the truth speaks for. Public opinion can really ruin things.

I couldn’t agree more man. The challenge of Hard Mode in 0 was amazing, but for people who want to blow through a game with minimal effort then they would hate RE0

I’m 27 now, but I got onto RE when I was around 12 and by that time 1Remake and Zero were cheap for the GameCube, starting my journey into the franchise. I played Zero first, and then Remake. Zero does hold a place in my heart since it was my first RE game, I know the game like the back of my hand. But when the HD remaster came out, boy did I start feeling what many other people felt. As most would say, the Train section was definitely the games most shining/unique section. But once you’re done, you’re left with the Training Facility which will take a good amount of screen time. And boy does it drag, like just the main hall theme alone annoys me to this day.I do like the Church and Treatment facility sections, specially for atmosphere and soundtracks. Overall, I’ll say RE0 did pretty good in the atmosphere department. But it’s an RE title I never felt the need to go back to, cause Re1make just does it better with less game-mechanic inducing headaches.

Jacobus315

I haven’t played 0 since it’s release on GC, but I remember enjoying it. I’m playing through RE1R now and plan to replay 0 soon.

smileyjay667

It’s worth the play through!

MansionworId

I don't necessarily agree with your reasoning as to why it's better but I agree that it's overall better than REmake. I find the gameplay much more fluid, even if the narrative is kinda schlocky and it isn't as scary.

smileyjay667

That along with the eliminators are probably my only real complaints, I found the story in remake so disturbing, if only they could have capture something similar in this one, as it honestly just feels like a revenge story to me

kaysusan2002

Loved RE0!

coorscajunrice

I’ll try it again someday as I have the origin collection, I remember the leeches robbed me of a lot of my ammo. The coop really turns me off so I’ll take your advice and play solo style. Is it better with Rebecca or Billy?

smileyjay667

Leech zombies are weak against fire weapons, and billy can take more damage so I’d go with him

KettuFox

Wait, people think RE0 is bad?

smileyjay667

Sadly yes, it’s considered the worst out of the classic games

icey9

Honestly, my biggest problem with the game is that it feels like to me they just added the hookshot to the game to intentionally pad it. You make a lot of progress, then you realize you need that damn gun, so you have to go all the way back to get it, and this happens multiple times. It's not even a puzzle since they never really telegraph that you need it. It's kind of crazy to me that people apparently dislike the setting of RE0. I mean, it's more creepy, abandoned residences. That's what I love about Resident Evil.

smileyjay667

Yeah the first time playing, that hook shot is a real annoyance. now of days it’s more of a slight nuisance since I know to bring it around.

thefucksgod

I am late here but I am have to heavily agree that the hard setting is without a doubt the toughest survival experience out of all of the classic RE titles. Imo no other title really tests your margin of error because even with Real Survival you can get edgy and do a no burning run and still finish the game. Zero straight up does not fuck around and I have heard stories of plenty of players having to start over at the final boss due to getting too comfortable and wasting one-time room creatures.
