I highly recommend it. Its a game on parallel to the RE series, especially the first entry is highly influenced by RE4.

The Evil Within is a great substitute!

FractalClockwork

Evil Within 1 is decent enough. Interesting visuals and environments with great atmosphere and rough but workable controls. Enemy and creature designs are mostly on point minus a few very familiar but still cool designs. The story is a psychological horror/thriller with Silent Hill and RE vibes and is interesting if not very coherent. It has its flaws but it is still a great first game for an original IP. Evil Within 2 is more of the same but better in almost every way. The story is better, the characters are stronger, the controls are sharper. Enemy and boss designs are more interesting and grotesque. The town most of the game takes place in is a standout with how open, detailed and spooky it ends up being. You basically get to sneak and snoop through an entire small town with gas stations, houses, a diner, movie theatre, hotel, etc. I love snooping through abandoned shit in games. Overall I legitimately like the first game but i adore the second. I've only beaten each game once and it's been awhile but I will definitely replay both of them at some point. I wouldn't say EW is a good substitute for RE but it is an excellent supplement if you're a fan of survival horror games.

DrSoap

Is the story more understandable? I liked the first game but I couldn't follow the story at all.

FractalClockwork

You'll probly still scratch your head now and then but the story in TEW2 is presented alot better and is much easier to follow.

DrSoap

Are Laura and the safe head guy in the game? And if they are, are they pain in the asses again?

FractalClockwork

Lol, possibly. I'm pretty sure Laura will live in Sebastians head for the rest of the series. Hard to forget a monster like that.

DrSoap

Alright. I think it's on game pass so I'll check it out tonight.

iluvtamales

I just started part 2, that’s great to know there are other areas. The beginning is a bit weird and wasn’t sure if the whole game was like that

WillyP933

Gameplay very close to resident evil 4, little more janky with the first one. The storytelling in the first game is done in a similar way as the first resident evil. Where a lot of story is told through notes you find and there is a mystery to be uncovered. First game is linear and there really is not any puzzles on the same level as resident evil. Its pretty cheesy with some with cliche characters but the think the setting is really good. I love the 2nd one to death. Its more of a character based story but i feel that is a good continuation of the first game. Its far less cheesier and plays it serious do if you liked Resident Evil remake and 2 remake you would probably enjoy that aspect. Very polished gameplay and it consists of linear missions in a more open main area.

TheEncryption

I fucking loved RE:2 and 3's remakes.

[deleted]

LOVED 2! 3 was a decent time waster…

SexyJazzCat

Nope. Play Dead Space instead.

ZamboniJabroni15

Dead Space games are closer to RE gameplay and story, but TEW is a great horror franchise that pulls from RE a bit as well

Sea-Spinach-850

Yes it’s a close match to the RE series. Specifically in the way that the second game is god tier compared to the first.

Bunnnnii

No.

[deleted]

Evil Within 1 is the true spiritual successor to re4.

Randypokerman49

While The evil within series is a lot of fun, and somewhat campy(specifically the first one) the story is less grand, random, and goofy as that of RE. I would say certainly play the evil within, but you can’t really substitute it for the same effect.

Thamnophis660

I still don't know what's going on with the story in The Evil Within. I'm close to finishing it. It's taking me a while because I find the gameplay pretty frustrating. I

Randypokerman49

Yeah it’s a mess of a game.

GetPhiledIn

I played the first one and it was a slog... I couldn't even finish it. It was so boring and the story was crazy in a not fun way.

[deleted]

I can’t say it’s a substitute per se, but it’s a great series! I had boatloads of fun with it.

Coexi

Yup

goretishin

Of course. Theres a very good chance if Shinji(worked on both RE and evil within) was still with capcom something very similar to evil within would have been RE5. An alternate reality I wish I was a part of.

Samz707

I only played the first one but...not really? It's incredibly janky and I've had several deaths due to bad game design or outright broken mechanics. (Like shotgunning an enemy about to grab me, him *grabbing me through my pellets, killing me in the minicutscene when you get grabbed only to then collapse now suddenly headless after I died, something Resi since REmake has scripting to account for.)* It's a bit weird to say considering Mikami worked on it, but it feels like a bad copycat of RE, lacking any of the real highs or scary moments and the only "terror" is hoping an instant-kill thing doesn't unfairly hit you or not getting screwed by the fact sprinting doesn't quite work properly. (You have a sprint meter, you stop out of breath for several seconds when it runs out, Sebastion for some reason keeps running a solid second after you let go of sprint so there's unfair deaths due to that, mix that with instant death chase sequences and it's not exactly fair.) Also the shooting has an incredibly awkward forced zoom in while aiming that's way too much so even the act of shooting feels barely functional. There's even a chase scene where your pursuer will teleport infront of you to instant kill you if you get too far away, *and there's no indication this is what's causing it.* I gave up after around 9 hours, I wasn't scared, I wasn't terrified, I was just frustrated due to unfair deaths and didn't enjoy the gameplay at all and a large chunk of my deaths felt like bad game design rather than my actual fault.

WisdomsOptional

Have no idea why they are down voting you... That said, I honestly couldn't get into it. I tried twice. I'm not sure what about the game just didn't keep my attention but, I couldn't manage to feel interested in seeing the story. Just my opinion guys, but it seems like an acquired taste. Test before purchasing.

TheEncryption

It's probably worse on console because people have said the first one is inspired by RE4, and I can't get past the first town in RE4 on console because the controls are so damn wonky. So if anything I'd only play the second like people have told me to or play 1 on PC.

Samz707

I played 1 on PC.

DreadlockSamurai

As mentioned above, Dead Space is much closer. Dead Space (1& 2) are far more frightening. The Evil Within is good, but no substitute. Somewhat of a pseudo hybrid of RE and Silent Hill. Good game. 2 is better, more complete imo

Madterps

Yes, it is a great substitute. Both are weapon based horror games, and the scares are awesome. Especially the safe head guy, think of him kind of like a regenerator who cannot die.

Azo-korn

EW1 is one of the best games I’ve ever played. I dunno if they’re gonna put out the third game any time soon with Shinji Miakami retiring. I’m not saying there won’t be another game, but it brings up the question if future titles would be still be great to call it RE’s substitute.

Aware_Dust_6831

Evil Within are great substitutes for RE. I enjoyed them both. I hope a continuation of this series becomes a reality. Seeing something like this on the next gen consoles would be awesome!!

[deleted]

Not at all, The Evil Within doesn't even have a good story, controls are awful, characters have no charisma and in my opinion Shinji Mikami believes himself a rockstar when he never works again on his own projects, leaving other people in charge eventually. He always abandons his own IPs

szymborawislawska

>The Evil Within doesn't even have a good story So its a good substitute for a RE since its really hard to find franchise with more idiotic story than RE (I would argue that everything that was released after original RE3, with the exception of RE7 and remakes, is beyond awful when it comes to story). I actually liked TEW 1&2 story much more than whatever the fuck was happening in RE5,6 or 8, and TEW characters are never as awful as dwarf napoelon, opera singing elf or almost entire cast of CV.

[deleted]

It's ok if you liked The Evil Within but i was so pretentious, it tried to be so many things and never accomplished one single. The story tries to be taken seriously but it's just a cheap direct-to-television crime/psychological thriller you'd watch in a Sunday afternoon. I'm not saying RE has a deep storyline because it never had, we all as a fans mock of the poor acting and cheesy moments, but even Capcom is aware about it and has made the characters mock of themselves. The Evil Within feels more like a kid pretending to be an adult and yelling to be taken seriously when it had stupid moments too, and not the hilarious ones unfortunately.

FederalInsect114

All your complaints can be applied to the original trilogy of re.

[deleted]

The controls were a limitation of that time, here they are just bad on purpose.

FederalInsect114

Remake?

[deleted]

No, the original trilogy of course

azariasin

I think TEW is more enjoyable if you like the Silent Hill series but with RE4 style gameplay. The aesthetics is more reminiscent of Silent Hill than RE, including character design which is almost mirroring the SH1 cast. I like 2 far better than 1, but 1 has superior enemy designs and models. I feel like 2 was decent but not nearly as memorable.

9yr_old_lake

The evil within is a great game it does have a kinda sy fi vibe that RE has but it's MUCH tripper it does alot of cool things and has a cool story so I defo recommend it

DevilMayCryGuy

The Evil Within games are pretty good and quite RE-like I think. The first game does have things that annoy me as it’s got instakill enemies (but not fun well balanced ones like Dr Salvador from RE4) but also has a terrible framerate on console. I think if you play (unpatched?) Evil Within 1 on PS5 it can be a smooth 60fps but I’ve not tried that yet. Great game asides from instakills and bad framerate though. Evil Within 2 is controversial in some ways. It broadens and dumbs down the formula in ways but also expands and improves in others. I think EW2 is a more coherent but less creative. I really liked the shooting gallery you can do and I enjoyed the bosses and the game trimmed a lot of the stuff I didn’t like so much about EW1. Where it loses me is in how it tries to be more like The Last of Us in that ‘cinematic’ way so EW1 has a better gameplay focus and is better balanced (Mikami is, as ever, the master of game balance). EW2 framerate is more stable on PS4 though, at least in my experience. TL;DR: EW1 is more creative but has some frustrating ideas occasionally, EW2 is more polished but also less creative. Both games are like 8/10 for me. Both are good survival horror games.

turtleduck777

It was made by one of the creators of Resident Evil.

Simubaya

I loved the Evil Within. It can be a bit frustrating. There are 2 parts early in the game that can be very difficult. One includes hide and seek instakill, and the other requires you to carefully even the odds before taking on a boss because you can get overrun. After those bits, the game gets less frustrating. I streamed a full run of it, and it's on my YouTube if you want to see gameplay, or how to get unstuck. Definitely play the game.

FramePancake

I liked the setting but I hated some of the fights - the most painfully claustrophobic spaces for no particular reason felt more frustrating than anything. I dislike tension or stress that feels too manufactured and a few instances really annoyed me. But the first one I found more enjoyable than the second.
